hey man its funny how you use other video clips on yours showcasing them as tourists like trying yourself to distance from them but you are no jouralist you are youtuber and also a tourist and have no investigative journalistic skills. and you had many wrong details, how you described LN and how can you speculate if btc has been label legal tender by the gov i know well it works and have used the chivo wallet. lol the scam example like equifax exposing SSN of many us citizen xD what did the US do? how did it solve it? or like Costa rica getting hacked by Conti what did the Costarican gov do to improve and better security, lots of citizens data got leaked... funny how you did not mention how the maras had deals with the previous govs of the FMLN and ARENA this is documented and not a conspiracy.
According to the latest data, more than 60% of the population downloaded the Chivo wallet - and 70% of the unbanked population were onboarded. Despite these impressive numbers, just 40% of users continued using the wallet after spending their $30 bonus.
Great video but with all due respect, there are a couple of things I'd like to disagree with. It is easy for you to criticize President Bukele's and his country's response to their gang epidemic. You were born/raised in relatively peaceful, law abiding countries. The US and Costa Rica have not had to endure the hardships of El Salvador. Both countries have enjoyed relative peace, while Salvadorans until recently have had to endure decades of robberies, extortion, kidnapping and murder. These people have been through living hell. Their knee jerk reaction to lock up basically 1% of their population, (criminals) now that they have the upper hand, many would say is totally justifiable. El Salvador has a free press and opposing political parties are free to criticize their president's actions. There is nothing to indicate that journalists or the opposition have been silenced or threatened with imprisonment or that they one day will. The president of El Salvador enjoys a 90% approval ratings because a traumatized nation is grateful that they are finally rid of these monsters and can breath a sigh of relief. Without peace and security, my friend, nothing else matters. It is as simple as that. If that's a dictatorship, I'll take some of that.
As a salvadoran i can tell you that not everything you said is true. Compare Bukele's government to Nicaragua and other countries is a big mistake. The people of El salvafor has given Bukele's government the power to do what it is best for us. If Bukele keeps doing things to benefit his people, we will continue to vote for him.
I agree, it seems unfair to suggest there will be a dictatorship soon. El Salvador is democratic and hasn't started to show signs of changing. The human rights issue is a tough situation but it seemed very necessary to get the country on track. I hope the best for El Salvadores future and I hope to start a tech company there as well where there are no taxes.
Im very excited for your people. Im American and have been trying to keep a close eye on how he continues to run El Salvador. With the fiat Dollar going bust .📉 if history repeats there will be a new form of currency with Bitcoin and El Salvador has a high risk high reward thing going on rn. Good luck 👍🏼
That’s the problem y’all will give him too much power and he’ll take advantage idk how you guys are so blind to it in a couple of years everyone will laugh at you guys when he’s a full blown dictator
It’s not for us to decide what is best for El Salvador. The Salvadorians have made that choice clearly (over 90%) prefer the current situation to the living hell they had under the gang rule.
@@oswaldf328 .... nope ....it was advocating ..... because there are a lot of inaccuracies .... we just went there and this "report" is so off !!! .... it sounds communist-skewed (there are a lot of Costa Ricans turning to communism)
@@jc6781 I totally agree. It's for Salvadorians to determine what's the best direction for their country. The world does NOT have to live there. If the majority of Salvadorians are content w/Bukele leadership, that's all that matters. It was the world who armed & financed their civil war. Salvadorians were the pawns in a world's geo-political dispute. A dispute they shed blood for but gain nothing. It's time for the world to be quiet & let them forge their own destiny. Even if it is a destiny & direction we DON'T agree with. I am saying this as an American. After all, is that not what true Americanism is - self-determination.
NOW that BITCOIN is at ALL TIME HIGHS, Nobody is talking about Bukele's wise decision to make profits for his country. They are up, 50%,, a bank will pay you 3 to 4.5% for a C.D., BTC for El Salvador; more than 16% per year, and if they bought the dip, which may well be, assuming they had DCA at all time lows, their yearly returns were even higher. Smart country.
This is great journalism. The news companies ought to take notes from you. I honestly can't remember the last time I saw such a balanced assessment of any issue in today's news. Congratulations to the whole Slidebean team.

He didn’t describe the lighting network correctly. It’s not a coin, it’s a payment network and it’s what the future global financial system will operate on. Lighting is a layer two scaling solution with BTC being the base layer. Take the content of this video grain of salt.
The issue is: for the casual user, it doesn't matter. If it does not work for him/her, it is moot if the problem is lighting, Bitcoin or something in between.
@@roquemocan yes, lightning needs better software and adoption. Few also pay with gold or BTC. Maybe LTC or litecoin will take over - since it is 4x faster on chain - one confirmation should happen in 2.5 minutes or less. LESS AWKWARD!
@@elsalvador_pl but the average citizen will only have heard of the Chivo Wallet... the one that is GOVERNMENTAL and is a Custodial wallet... the antithesis of the philosophy of Bitcoin... more so with this dictatorial, fascist president
5:33 This dude is scanning Lightning network scan and trying to pay from Bitcoin Network and went on talk about Blocktime 10 mins... Lol Lighting network is instant and Lighting network is what everybody uses to recieve payments especially for small amounts. Lighting network is Layer 2 sanctioned by main Bitcoin Layer. Lighting network is secure and is as good as main Bitvoin layer as long as Nodes are being monitored.
@@loupasternak -- Maybe he was? Lightning network is a layer 2 on top of the BTC blockchain... it is not necessarily as secure or reliable - though it is fast.
For a bitcoin explainer video, I’m surprised how inaccurately the lightning network is characterized here. Lightning is not a separate cryptocurrency and you can transfer BTC directly to a lightning wallet without converting to a different currency.

Honestly, as a Salvadoran, I have always seen myself close to CR and I consider you my CA brothers (it is sad that apparently the perception is not mutual for some of you who see yourselves as a green island). At the moment, we Salvadorans are people who have suffered a lot, with the hope that for the first time we are on the right path. We have not lost democracy, and we feel that we have won the freedom that the gangs had taken from us. Many organizations (political parties, journalists, businesses, etc.) lost the power they had, the power to decide who lived or who made money or who can be happy. Therefore the criticism is understood, but I think time will have the last word (we do not want to see ourselves subjugated again by those who criticize the current government). For now, I'm just happy you came, and I hope you come back soon. You are always welcome.
Don't be surprised if El Salvador becomes more prosperous than Costa Rica in about 10-15 years from now if Bukele gets reelected as president in 2024. As of 2023, El Salvador has the lowest homicide rates in the western hemisphere. Who saw that coming? I sure didn't.
I'm from El Salvador and I feel like I'm on an island of peace among so much death. Costa Rica, for example, is today the third most violent country in Central America, only surpassed by Honduras and Guatemala. El Salvador is the safest country in Latin America, I would never go to a violent country like Costa Rica. 🚨
👋🏼 Saludos.
You forgot a BIG asterisk: **since the last period**. Unfortunately we will only be able to see the real results once Bukele's period ends (unless hi wants to ignore the constitution and illegally run for president again)... Because for the last 20 years, el Salvador has been almost always the most violent country in the American continent
Salvadoran here, I'm extremely happy that you had the opportunity to go and visit!! El Salvador has changed for the better. The country is not where it wants to be, but it is heading into the right direction. The country is a lot safer than what it used to be. Change takes time, but change is taking place slowly! About BTC, seed has been planted. In my opinion future generations will evolve and get to use it more. El Salvador still is a cash based society. Great unbiased journalism!!! Saludos
I am a Californian but I will say this, in time you will not use the US dollar forever as it is debt based, it loses its value as it inflates as the US government debt keeps getting bigger with no end in sight as they lifted the debt ceiling recently and indefinitely. It will lose its place as a reserve currency in the future.
This right here was a top notch video. The quality was great. I honestly wonder and think about El Salvador and their experiment with Bitcoin, their governmental and legal changes, and a lot of what you addressed. I've been curious how something like Bitcoin could work for 95% of the people in such a country, when even in Canada and the United States, it feels like it would take a lot of infrastructure to get the nations fully on board to such a thing. Keep up the amazing work. Thank you for what you do. I only discovered you a couple months ago but quickly blazed through your catelog of work. It does seem like this longer storytelling format is perfect for your style and gives more room to give context, which is always critical and often the first thing people cut out. Thanks again!
this is hardly journalism .... it's very inaccurate ! this guy strikes me as part of a growing number of communists in Costa Rica (we met plenty in CR). Although CR was always one of the best for safety, that is quickly changing .... for the first time they told us: "don't go to such a place at night" ..... maybe CR could learn some pointers from ES
25:55 If you want to change things fast, they will be always "collateral damage" and innocents will suffer. You can try change things slow, with much less collateral damage, but much more damage from the gangs to Innocent people. You can choose.
So far, it is one of the best documentaries I've seen on UA-cam, and I've watched plenty :)) The historical background added a lot more value to the tech stuff you were discussing. I found your channel last week and have already watched most of your videos. Keep up the good work! Well done, and many thanks.
There is some clear bias against ES right ffom the beginning. Also he showed up to spend bitcoin without having a Lightning wallet already set up and knowing how to use it. Pretty lame
No offence man but its hard to take your judgement of El salvador's new president seriously. You yourself mentioned the amount of gang violence. It became a failed state with the gangs running rampant. To protect as many people as possible and to be able to actually develop sometimes you need drastic steps and sometimes ensure that that it doesn't slide back.
EL SALVADOR has a lot of potential. It could become the next Singapore for Latin America, a corporate capital for Latin America. It is a must that Nayib Bukele has to be re-elected for him to continue his plans for El Salvador.
I am 7 minutes in and I am shocked that you - as a tech nomad - don’t know about the difference between Bitcoin (intentionally slow) and second layer Bitcoin Lightning that does payments for a fraction of the cost and faster than any credit card payment. Sorry, this is a huge difference. Like wanting to drive a Ferrari, but putting Diesel inside and then complaining about the bad performance.
If you're paying at a restaraunt you should be using a layer 2 solution like lightning. You shouldn't be making essentially micropayments on the main blockchain. It's not how it works. Strike set up the wallets I find the whole thing fishy after watching this part.
I think El Salvador is moving towards a Rwandan style system where security and economy is great but at the cost of personal liberty and democratic rights.
The press is free, ALL the press is owned by the opposition from Bukele and continues working in El Salvador, Bukele doesn't have even one media outlet because he uses social media. They have several news channels in open TV and they talk against Bukele EVERY DAY, they also have one private university UCA and one Cardinal talking in favor of ALL gangsters. Not even one journalist, opposition, cleric has been stopped from reporting even though their ideas represent only 3% of the population, literally 3%, but that's freedom of speech for you, 3% of the people have 100% of the media and nobody stops their bs, they make protest with 300 people and not even one police officer or military stops them, their protests are a real joke. We Salvadorans hate them and their sh-t, they keep asking to free the gangsters, not just the "innocent" but all of them, the same with the opposition, that's why they will lose all their Congressman next elections, 93% of Salvadorans support sending gangsters to prison.
And what makes you come to this conclusion? Biased reports like this. I was just there and 90 percent of the negative crap in this video is just that....ishhh...
this video is brought to you by WEF and FED... yes bitcoin mainnet tx takes time to confirm, and no you never use mainnet to transact. you use lightning network which is instant.
I disagree that people do not use bitcoin because of the complexity, Africa has also 70% unbanked people and yet mobile money has taken over where the same unbanked people use mobile money with ease. I do believe trust would play a role for sure.
It's a big debate. What do we prefer? An insafe country with no tourism and poor structure but with humanitarian rights, or a safe country that was marketed because of that, encourages tourism but the cost is to sacrifice human rights? As an Argentinian, I prefer the second one. Today, left-wing populism has slowly been destroying the country, to a point where we discuss laws that work in USA/Europe, but can't afford because of the horrible management of our economy. I don't know how people from outside the country sees us, but our main political parties are based on the same centre-left ideology (Unión por la Patria and Juntos por el Cambio) and NO ONE wants to fix the economy issue, leading to an increase in drug trafficking, violence, stealing and killing someone for a pair of shoes.
To be honest, even if Argentina has crime, it is nothing compared to El Salvador before 2018. However, even if murder rates are lower in Argentina, empirical data shows the percentage of murders related to robbery are higher in Argentina than in some more dangerous countries. In my country, 75% of murders are related to drug violence. In Argentina, a high percentage of murders are not due to drug violence, but due to robberies. Also, the Argentinian economy is a total and absolute mess. Un manicomio.
Here's the problem, you drank the kool-aid. It's not "left-wing populism" its deliberate meddling in El Salvadorian politics by corporations. But I guess it's okay to live under corporate rule as long as you get your little toys made in China.
Bitcoin is not practical for ordinary transactions. It’s promoted like a marketing scam, to people who never use it in commerce. Max Keiser is a well known Bitcoin promoter and El Salvador promoter. This was an excellent documentary that exposes Bitcoin’s reality in daily use.
Well done balanced look at El Salvador. I would like to welcome you back in a year's time and do a follow up. I truly believe we're about to see a major positive transformation here within the next 12 to 18 months.

One of the best takes on the situation of El Salvador that I have yet seen. I applaud you and your team, this is what journalism should look like👏👏👏. What's going on in El Salvador has opened up a debate in a lot of Latin American countries, on whether it is worth the risk repeating our history and descending into dictatorships, in order to finally deal with the crippling insecurity, crime, murder and lawlessness that have chronically plagued our nations. This is a discussion that, because of Bukele, I find myself ever more often discussing with my parents, with my friends and with my co-workers. What is more valuable to us? Are we comfortable giving up political and civic rights for the "promise" (because that's all it is, a promise. In El Salvador it may be working now, but who knows 10 years down the road) of more security? Are we really ready to take that gamble again in the hopes this time it will pay off? It is, however you look at it, a really interesting, nuanced and complicated debate, that I feel you have captured really well in this piece. Greetings from Colombia.

Thank you for this gut-wrenching watch. I visited ES, my homeland, after 38 years and have been a BTC maxi for some time. The view you presented from the ground floor is spot on. I think it's like if you traveled to England in like 1899 and interviewed a bunch of people on the new automobiles, 90% of the people would be saying "they don"t work, they catch on fire, they breakdown, we don't understand where the oil goes, they get stuck in the mud, we are used to our horse n carts" etc... infrastructure for massive new technologies takes time man
El Salvador is the clear example of how using the bad tech gives a bad image, Bitcoin is not a good solution for constant daily usage and maxis can't accept it unfortunately. Stablecoins running on faster blockchains are better suit for that use case.
Net Tourism in El Salvador is up paying for itself In 2022, 2.5 million visitors entered El Salvador, which represented a 96% recovery [from 2019]. "We exceeded the goal we had for this year, of 2.4 million visitors," said the Minister of Tourism, Morena Valdez. In terms of ... the spending of visitors during their stay in the country, it exceeded $2,646 million, which meant a growth of 50% compared to 2019. "This is because our international visitors are staying longer in the country, they are spending more, and they are using all the tourism items in our value chain: transportation, hotels, restaurants, recreational sites, among others," said the Minister. They also just hosted Central American and Caribbean Games opening ceremony without incident recently and were praised for it after Panama backed out with only 1 and a half year's runway El Salvador has been praised for "saving" the Central American and Caribbean Games, which officially got underway today, after stepping in to replace Panama as host of the multi-sport event. San Salvador in El Salvador was chosen as the replacement host in May 2021 and is now set to stage 31 of the 37 sports, with the others due to be held in the Dominican Republic. Centro Caribe Sports President Luis Mejía Oviedo heaped praised on El Salvador for stepping into the breach during his speech at the Opening Ceremony. "I let it be known that the granting of a host is given six years in advance," said the International Olympic Committee member. "El Salvador arrived with the challenge of being able to do it in a year and a half, and told us: 'we can do it'. "You saved our Games. "This is a feat that leaves a historical reference, because it is the first and only time that we will grant a host in such a short time." "When the previous host declined, we saw an opportunity to save these Games and guarantee that thousands of athletes could shine and fulfil their dreams of participating in a sporting event of this level. "What is normally done in six years, we did it in a year and a half. "It was a great challenge for everyone, especially for the thousands of workers, but we can say: 'we did it'. "Our country did not have any stage worthy of football, but today we are inaugurating the first one. "Our athletes will finally have adequate spaces to compete in these Games. Nitpick on the presidential approval ratings. Putin also has a high approval rating. He's consistently been in the 70s and now in the 80s (even after the SMO and the Wagner "coup") based on polls conducted from early 2010s and now from both western pollsters and anti-Putin groups. Not sure what your source is because a 21% is absurd

This reporter's a typical millennial VICE wannabe. Even his mannerisms are so cringe lmao

There is pretty much a 100% certainty that the global financial system will never use the lightning network or bitcoin

@26:30 You were safe. The citizens support it because it makes them safe. If the people choose it, how is it tyranny?
I'm from El Salvador and I feel like I'm on an island of peace among so much death. Costa Rica, for example, is today the third most violent country in Central America, only surpassed by Honduras and Guatemala.
El Salvador is the safest country in Latin America, I would never go to a violent country like Costa Rica. 🚨

👋🏼 Saludos.
You forgot a BIG asterisk: **since the last period**.
It’s interesting that the moderator hasn’t replied to this post (and a few others).
Nobody is thinking about rwanda

Dear editor, could you go easy on the "tinnitus" sound effect? It's really annoying, especially when it's that loud.

Lol. How about what the international community and NGO picked and choose when my people were slaughtered and now that we are improving they crawl out of the sewers like rats to defend terrorists.

This guy is only mad that El Salvador has change. Incredible, incredible. Think about it people. Where was he when El Salvador was in hell. Now he says we should take bukely as the vilian. This kid has a lot to learn.

Although CR was always one of the best for safety, that is quickly changing .... for the first time they told us: "don't go to such a place at night" ..... maybe CR could learn some pointers from ES
@jc6781
I get the same impression that some Costa Ricans and other nations are the critics who are jealous that El Salvador is rapidly advancing globally and eventually be over passing most of latin america politically and economically!
As Central American living in the past conditions of El Salvador the president Bukele Had to take drastic decisions for drastic problems there was no choice you are free to think what you want but we are better off now and will will 5 years from now you can’t compare other countries history to ours we are in different times, Gob bless Bukele and God bless America (contienrt)

Nice video. I can see your point. I'm from El Salvador I left in 1987 and returned now that the government has got their act together. The difference is night and day from what the 1980s was like talking politics. You mention that other dictatorship started the same way but only time will tell. Let's hope for the best. Thank you
Bitcoin as a currency is ridiculous. Now as a digital gold that makes more sense. Buy Bitcoin to back your currency I can understand
Thank you for this gut-wrenching watch. I visited ES, my homeland, after 38 years and have been a BTC maxi for some time. The view you presented from the ground floor is spot on. The way you illustrate the tenuous political situation is palpable there. I hope the situation will improve for everyday El Salvadorans, but only time will tell.
So glad to hear the video resonated with you! I'm hoping for a brighter future for this beautiful country as well. Thank you for your comment 🙂

There will be ups and downs, and the learning process with its society won't happen overnight. Time will tell, and let's pray for its society to be successful in its journey for a better future.
I'm okay with slow adoption. You don't want to rush people into such a drastic change. Over time, as Bitcoin price goes up and USD value goes down, more and more people will gradually adopt it in an organic fashion.
I'm watching this in May 2024.
Bitcoin currently is around 61,000 USD.
So their 2,300 BTC = about 140,300,000 USD :'p

This is such a well made piece, loved the attention to history, seeing the people’s perspectives, and the phenomenal videography. The thing about journalists being harassed really feels like what’s going on in my home country of Zimbabwe. I flew in last week to see some family and got pulled aside and questioned about my camera…managed to prove I wasn’t a journalist, but something about that didn’t sit well with me especially considering it’s election season.
Anyway, keep up the good work guys ✨

bitcoin talk ends and the typical foreign journalist virtue signaling begins at 17:20
"At best the fastest a block can clear is 10 minutes". It isn't always 10 minutes but even if it was and you initiated your transaction during the 9th minute of wait it would technically get confirmed in less than a minute.
You are 500% wrong.

Net Tourism in El Salvador is up paying for itself
In 2022, 2.5 million visitors entered El Salvador, which represented a 96% recovery [from 2019].
They also just hosted Central American and Caribbean Games opening ceremony without incident recently and were praised for it after Panama backed out with only 1 and a half year's runway
El Salvador has been praised for "saving" the Central American and Caribbean Games, which officially got underway today, after stepping in to replace Panama as host of the multi-sport event.
"This is a feat that leaves a historical reference, because it is the first and only time that we will grant a host in such a short time."
"When the previous host declined, we saw an opportunity to save these Games and guarantee that thousands of athletes could shine and fulfil their dreams of participating in a sporting event of this level.
"Being here, in this stadium, is proof that everything has been worth it.
