"Nervous Conditions" is a fab novel! You'll thoroughly enjoy it. You're right in it not being too dense a read so you could probably polish it off in a day or two. It's a difficult read in terms of subject matter at times, though, particularly when focussing on the disparity of education quality between White and Black Africans, and when considering the impact of diasporic living mentally on the individual. It's a cornerstone of postcolonial literature and I'm sure you'll have something incredibly insightful and well-articulated to say about it!

I love love love your late night rambles especially when its about books because I'm a real bookworm myself. My bestie studied literature as well and she wrote her Bachelor thesis about her favorite genre, horror, like an overview through the years beginning with Poe I guess. And she told me that writing about it, ruined the genre for her especially because even now its not a fun read anymore because she is well aware about the symbolization and stuff. Ramble over. for uni I have to read lots of books and essays about arts, culture and sociology but most of them are really difficult to read, however your vlogs keep me motivated when I have to read Baudrillard, Bordieu and Canclini. Greetings from Mexico

The author of Nervous Conditions is Tsitsi Dangarembga and it was one of the setworks in my first year. Seeing you go to the library to read really makes me miss going to class, and getting my reading done, since most universities in South Africa are shut down at the moment because of disruptive protests against tertiary education fees. Hopefully we can go back soon and get back to working and getting ready for the end of the year exams. I hope you feel better soon 🌼🍃 And good luck with your dissertation. :)

Ahhh I love 'Sabriel' and all the other Garth Nix books! If, on the rare occasion you find yourself needing something else to read, you should definitely get 'The Passage' by Justin Cronin! Another gripping sci-fi/fantasy genre book!

I loved Fantasy/Dystopian when I was little as well! I progressed on to H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, the creators of sci-fi

ahh feels my planner spreads are embarrassing and pathetic but it would be so cool to see yours, mainly the study side (so the oh deer planner) to see how you allocate tasks and time and such and how to set realistic study goals. Also an english lit (and history) major so I love seeing that kind of stuff. Whenever you talk about close reading and how you approach your course I find it so helpful :)

Hi Jess, Love your videos and especially your vids where you talk about books! Have you read The Stand by Stephen King? It's one of the best fantasy/syfy/dystopians I have ever read and obviously aimed at adults. It's a bit of a commitment (1000+ pages) but since you said you've read the Song of Ice and Fire series I highly recommend it!

Across the Nightingale Floor and the rest of the Tales of the Otori books were simply gorgeous! I'm currently reading Emperor of the Eight Islands by Lian Hearn which is a more adult version of the TotO books. It's a bit of a different writing style but has the same fictional feudal Japan setting with elements of magic incorporated, I would recommend checking it out!

As you mentioned liking fantasy books, I remember reading and absolutely loving the Daughter of the Empire Trilogy by Raymond E. Feist & Janny Wurts a few years back and wanted to recommend them. I'm unsure if I were to re-read the books again if I would love them to the extent as I remember loving them the first read, as I obviously know the vague plot of the series, but still recommend them if you're after an easy yet (imo) engaging read!

You should definitely read the obernewtyn chronicles by isobella carmody if you're a sucker for dystopian! They're the best i've ever read in terms of their specific themes. The first one i know a lot of people found slow, sometimes you have to come back to it. After decades since she's published the first one in '87, she's finished the series. I'm a little bit biased though bc she's an australian author and went to my very high school. Anyway, v good books. Check them out
