I love your picture with the chalks that you do. I have my old ones I do it every day and I think I’m pretty good at chalks. I’m also good at Marcos Barbara chocks.
Lovely painting. Precious dedication to Shirley. Paint on Shirley! Susan you are special, artistic, great teacher and very kind hearted. I'm proud to be a patreon!❤👼
Michele Thomas oh you bless me Michele. This is truly a labor of love but the benefits far outweigh the work involved. Sweet stories like Shirley make it all worth it 💜💜💜😉☺️
Hi Susan. I have to say that this painting is fantastic, as is all your work, and you inspire me to persevere with pastels. My only tiny criticism is the music it just makes me want to nod off whilst watching you work, but then I’m not a fan of listening to music when watching any artist work. Sorry and hope you don’t mind me saying.
I am so glad to have found your site! I only recently started pastel painting and have watched others who are so quick so I really appreciate your slower pace. And I like that fact that your are left handed as am I. It helps to see better what you're doing as when I copy you your work is not hidden under your hand. I am going to be 78 in a few months! Thank you!
It would have been nice to see the reference photo before you started painting. And maybe side by side comparison shot of your painting and photo when you finished the artwork. This helps me get some ideas on how to eliminate details and concentrate on the overall painting presentation.
I totally agree.... it was my fault for painting from a reference photo from www.pmp-art.com. They have copyright free photos, but their rule is that you can't share the photo on social media. I did share the link to the photo though in my art groups. Note to self: Don't do a demo using a photo like that again!!! :) Thanks so much.
I love the mini you did a while back. It would be fun to do more of those, say, 5 x 7. Gives us newbies a bit of confidence if we could complete something recognizable, then we'd feel perhaps we could venture into a larger painting the next time. Thanks
Thank you for this video. Almost picked up some soft pastels today at Hobby Lobby, but decided to see what you suggest for beginners. Please provide a link to the beautiful music creator online. I cannot even guess how to spell her name from your mention of it. I would love to hear more from her.
Katie Kruger Glad you waited Katie… Often the pastels purchased at retail art stores are not that great. Pastels are definitely a product where spending a little more makes a difference. A great set for beginners… That is someone who is already serious about wanting to paint with pastels, is the Unison 120 Half Stick Set. It has just about every color you need for a full pastel painting. It’s probably around $300, so there are cheaper options. You might want to start with a smaller set. I agree with you about the music and I’m so blessed that she is my daughter-in-law‘s sister. I will try to use more of her music in my videos. Bless you!
Hi Susan, just found your channel and am so glad I did. I'm a newby to pastels so I really appreciate your videos. I was wondering if it would be possible to show your reference while you are painting and kind of talk us through your thought process as you go so there is an understanding of why you choose the colors you choose and even why you are using the marks you are making. i.e.: scumbling vs. drawn line. Thanks for sharing your gift.
The song is "Steaua" by Elida Surducan. Elida happens to be the sister of my beautiful daughter-in-law, Lorena. They are from Romania and they both play, sing and write music. This song is an original by Elida. SO BEAUTIFUL!
Thanks for sharing this very nice video. I am new here and would like to know what color you use for the background. Since I watched another of your videos and it wasn't mentioned. Thanks a lot
I am going to start learning to paint with soft pastels. I am looking at the Sennelier 40 piece half sticks. I use their watercolors and they’re very nice. Do you recommend these pastels?
Hi Susan, another Susan here and a leftie also! I want to try the Claire Fontaine PastelMat, but I keep seeing lines, creases, or some kind of problem with the paper. Does this bother you when you're painting? Does it eventually get covered up with the pastel? It's so expensive, so I'm hesitating. Thank you very much for your wonderful instruction.!!
Hello other Susan ;) Lefties with the same name! Yes, the pastelmat I have used does have some imperfections (lines running throughout surface). It bothered me at first and I asked other artists if they had the same issue. Many said they did not. But I've found that it doesn't really matter, because as you suggested it usually gets covered up with pastel anyway. It is expensive though, but I love the fact that it's water friendly and you can even wash it off if you're not happy with a painting. Hope that helps!
Loving the music ❤
Thank you so much, @karenleah1477! I'm so glad you liked it! Happy Painting!

I like this very much! It is beautiful. Thank you very much. I love this way of painting with Pastels. Ineke from the Netherlands.
The music is heavenly, just love it. Great demo too :-) Really enjoyed this fully.
Yes, I really liked this format. Please do more. The peacefulness lifts my creativity. Beautiful painting! Fantastic music,
Ruth K
Awesome... that's great feedback Ruth. I so appreciate that. :)
I really like the music.

I'm a leftie, too, and I use both hands to paint! Great demo! I don't have many pastels yet.

I understand and thought that may have been the reason you didn’t show it.
THIS IS A GORGEOUS PAINTING AND THE MUSIC IS GREAT, TOO....:)
Can't wait!
Thank you so much. A beautiful painting. Very grateful for your generosity. 💜
You asked about the music. Honestly, I’d rather hear the scratch of the pastels to paper. We can play our own music if we so choose.
Thanks for that input. I like the scratchy sounds too.
Great job, Susan. I actually forgot you were only using 12 pastels. Love it.
I love it! I’m just starting painting and have minimal pastels, so it’s great to see what you could do with only 12. Thanks for your instruction!
I gave your tutorial a try! Thank you so much for all your videos!

I like it I’m going to try after the assignment of the poppies
Maravilhoso!!!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Love this! I have a plan in the works of what we can do with only 14 from a specific set to get started!
So lovely ❤
i love the music.
So relaxing!
Thank you sweetheart! How are you doing?
@@monetcafe Doing well.

Beautiful! Hard to imagine you could do that with only 12. Also, no black or white. :)
Oooh.
