    Sorry for the comment on an old video - but love your presenting style. Just bought the same pen and have pretty much the same views. Anyway, as I say - well presented - very engaging and funny.

    Thanks for the review. I have a fine 14k nib en route, to go with my matt black Studio which I acquired today. Can’t wait to try it out.

    That's a very nice birthday present you bought for your mother :) Thank you for reviewing her Lamy Studio. I have two Studios and they both write very nicely. I traded the rubber section on my Stainless Steel Studio with a pen friend for a metal Studio section as the latter was too slippery for him (but didn't bother me). The other Studio I own is the special edition in Bronze and it has the 14K nib. Both excellent writers!

    I don't have a particular hobby, penchant or understanding of pens, but I just enjoy your videos.

    The palladium on my pen came off within a year. Lamy's response was that the material wasn't actually suited for some people with a certain acidity of the skin. Strange explanation but the offered to replace the pen but I decided to keep my pen like it is, it still writes fine after many years.

      Ooh I have a fine nib, best fountain nib I have ever used.

    This is what I use as a 'daily writer'. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not particularly careful with it: I treat it like most people would handle a $5 roller ball. I've found the finish is prone to attract scratches/wear and I find it sometimes shows fingerp rints. I like the "well used" look but some people might not. Still, it's not so costly that I'd cry myself to sleep if it was lost.
    Lamy's 2-tone nibs are platinum plated 14k gold and are sold stand-alone in EF-BB for about €60 each.

    It is indeed a propeller. Also, the nib is solid gold with partial platinum cover. That's why it's among the more expensive lamys. I enjoy your videos a lot and just ordered a pen from FRP on your recommendation. Thanks! And keep up the good work!
    Edit: ah, I see,... somebody already wrote. Still: Nice videos!

    Its a full gold nib! The silver part is covert with platin!

    • @outsideworld76
      @outsideworld76 3 роки тому

      Of course the nib is completely 14 karat gold. The nib weighs 350mg so at 14 karat is only has 204mg pure gold which at the current price of 46k euro's is about 9,5 euro in gold. The pen retails for about 100...175 euros.

    The nib actually is fully gold, but most of it is plated; it's not just a bit of gold welded to steel as you said in the video

      Nyle Masoom you're correct. The silver part is platinum plated gold.

    To confirm, as of October 2015, it comes with the converter and a blue cartridge, exact same palladium 14K medium.

    Steven, I believe the clip is actually shaped like a propellor blade. That would account for the wierd shape you don't like. It would have that unique twist in the shape but they obviously couldn't put the other end on.

  • @arguchik
    @arguchik 8 років тому

    Downthread, someone said they thought this nib was 14K gold plated with platinum. I'm pretty sure it's actually plated with rhodium. But the upshot is that the whole nib is 14K, not just that small strip along the tines.

    I couldn't resist the design of this pen, but I have some issues with:
    -The metal section is in my opinion annoying slippery, I think because of the parabolic shape. I write two words and I should regrip the pen...
    -The cap when closed rotates on itself
    -The amount of turning force needed to screw the barrel in order not to have any gap between the barrel and the section is a bit excessive.
    What to do?
    I will order a plastic section replacement, to see if it is less slippery

    So it's more of a /k / sound instead of a /x/? And does the g at the end sound the same way as well?

  • @adriaanroeleveld5823

    Nice review! I like my Studios. The only thing is that this grip leaves scratches on the cap where it touches it. Also: the Studios with the plastic grip feel nicer.
    But still: nice pens that write great!

    Do you prefer the Lamy Studio with the 14k nib or the Lamy 2000? As they have the same nibs, is it just a matter of aesthetic preference? Is the converter in the Studio significantly easier to use and clean than the filling mechanism of the 2000?
    Also, fairly unrelated, but I've always wondered: is Dutch your first language? If so, your English accent is really nice. If not, I quite like your voice regardless. :)

    Interesting to see that the gold-nibbed filler of one model-line do not always and ever write really wetter than the steel ones of the same line, as often is said (or compared to the Safari-line, sharing all the same nib-feed ). But of course, there is also some variation in manufacturing quality - or is it the same feed with from model to model variying preferences? Know what I mean?

    Just ordered a Lamy Studio (the black one) from La Couronne du Comte. I like its shape, and I already love Lamy's nibs. I still have to try a gold nib from those guys though, since it seems they're very smooth (if Stephen says so, I believe him :)) But their steel nibs are great too, so I'll be fine. I'm not sure if they're interchangeable with the other Lamy's nibs (Like those on the Vista)

    Firstly, Thank you so much for this review. Based on it I did buy the Lamy Studio. I do however have a question for you. I have been having an issue with the nib where ink comes out from the little hole on the nib and continues to make a mess and the nib looks messy.
    I know I'm dong something wrong and I'm not sure what keywords to use to find the solution. I hope you can help. Thank you so much for your time.

    Stephen, for the price this is one of the nicest and smoothest ..best value and you'd have to buy a 400 Euro Visconti or Pelikan to get the feel and smoothness..anyway that's the feeling I get from my hand..could have been a GOAT pen maybe..

    I have had a Lamy Safari that would always skip on downstrokes. So I tried a studio. It was great for a year (apart from my grip slipping on the section) and then the studio also developed a skip on the same strokes. No more Lamy's for me I'm afraid.

      Tech Truth
      No I don't think so.
      By using too much pressure, he would have been ruined the whole nib with skipping here and there, not just always the same strokes.

    i really like this pen, but i found out that this ring that hold the cap when closed can get loose very easily. and once it's lost the cap doesnt hold. unfortunate, especially when you have the more expensive version.

    @sbrebrown Hi! thanks for the reviews, they are great! I also have a question, I've recently started using a converter for my Lamy Joy and it works great. The ink i bought to use with it however, bleeds like there is no tomorrow (i use standard notebook paper, cheap stuff). Anyway, i was wondering if you could recommend a good, cost-effective ink the doesn't bleed? Thank you and sorry for the long post!

    Terrible pen in my opinion! I am about to return mine to the retailer and exchange it for another model from a different brand (probably a Sailor 1911 variety). It 's impossible for me to write with it. The nib scratches, skips very often and gives a highly unpleasant feel during writing (the plain opposite of a smooth nib). I took it back to the retailer (also a nib-meister) for tuning the nib but without acceptable results. This nib seems bad beyond any possibility of improvement, hence my decision to return the pen. It also seems that I am not the only one having this problem. There are threads on the internet mentioning similar problems, all with the 14K gold nib of the palladium-finish version (not with the steel nibs of the cheaper versions of the Studio). All in all unworthy of a pen in this price-class.

    • @sbrebrown
      @sbrebrown  10 років тому +2

      DrBPhD Any fountain pen should not require pressure to write. Just touching the pen to the paper should cause the pen to write by itself.

    • @ezralimm
      @ezralimm 10 років тому

      Try a different ink. Clean out the pen properly and use water based ink. That solves most problems. India ink or iron gall inks can damage pens.. you may need a new nib if that's the case.

    • @DrBPhD
      @DrBPhD 10 років тому

      ezra limm A pen should (in my opinion) operate properly with any kind of ink which is non-corrosive and which does not contain organic solvents. The nib of the Lamy Studio Palladium Finish is a golden nib anyway, it should resist even mildly acidic inks. Btw, the pen is writing better and better now. It turns out you simply must have the right feel for it. The gold nib with its long tines seems indeed to be responsible for this characteristic: the tines tend to move apart easily even at low pen-pressure. Not a good primer for the ball-point writer who wants to switch to fountain pens: good chance he or she will burn through the nib in a few weeks. But for the more experienced fountain pen user it's maybe not a bad choice after all.
