"So, before I can really nerd out, I feel it’s important to give some context on the series for those who maybe haven’t watched it. I mainly wanna talk about the first few episodes since that’ll put things into perspective as I talk about other things later on in the video. Hajime no Ippo is a boxing series created by mangaka George Morikawa who had a fascination with boxing and decided to make a series dedicated to it after some time of being unsure of what he wanted to make. The story follows the life of Makunouchi Ippo and his path to becoming a professional boxer. Despite the many trials and tribulations he would come across, he decides to dedicate his life to this new-found passion.
Ippo at the start of the series is a high school student who is by no means weak, in fact he’s insanely strong, but far from confrontational. He struggles to stand up for himself, so he becomes a victim of bullying. He lives with his mother and helps the family boating business. One day, after his bullies beat him up on the riverbank on the way back home, a professional boxer by the name of Takamura comes to his aid. He takes Ippo back to his boxing gym to give him some treatment. Takamura gives him a small speech, and this is something I think about a lot.
Takamura saying this hit me pretty hard at the time, but let me stay on track. I'll talk about this a bit later. So after seeing what he said hurt Ippo’s feelings he decides to show him how to throw a punch, and the power Ippo demonstrates leaves everyone in awe. He punches the bag so hard that the skin on his fists get destroyed.
Skip forward a bit and Ippo seeks out Takamura and tells him he wants to become a pro boxer. Takamura feels… well just see for yourself.
After seeing Ippo pour his heart out, Takamura basically tells him if he wants to become a boxer he’s gonna need to prove himself. If he can catch ten leaves out of the air by using a jab he’ll take him to the gym to train and become a boxer. It takes many weeks of training and he comes close to giving up, but he finally manages to figure out the trick required for the feat and does it flawlessly. Takamura keeps his word and takes him to the gym where the coach, Kamogawa, is apprehensive and against letting Ippo into the world of boxing, so they set him up with a sparring match to prove his mettle. His sparring partner is a fellow 16 year old, Miyata, who isn’t a pro boxer yet, but has the skills of one. By all accounts Ippo should not get through the first round, but he remembers how hard he’s worked to get to this point.
Throughout the fight Ippo beats the odds again and again, so much so to the point it starts to affect Miyata’s morale. This fight is a perfect introduction to the series and couldn’t be done better. He implements everything that he’s learned from the past couple of episodes and gives Miyata a real challenge. The greatest thing about this fight is that even though Ippo does not land a single punch against Miyata, you never feel like it’s hopeless because of his will power to become a boxer. He gets knocked down and beaten, yet despite that he gets back on his feet. It’s a perfect demonstration of the potential Ippo has, and is but a small glimpse of what he’ll become in the future. It reminds me of how Genos from One Punch Man is, where he often loses, but since he always adapts to how the monsters beat him, you never doubt his ability to win. Both are masterfully written.
After Ippo loses the sparring match with Miyata, he’s sad of course, but is immediately brought up by his peers. Everyone cheers him on and gives him the credits he deserves. The coach, impressed by the guts Ippo has, decides to start training Ippo into a real boxer. From this moment forward Ippo’s life completely changes, and he moves forward onto this path with a new found resolve."
