I've always learned that the very first sign of "weirdness" in a deal...I walk away, no matter what. Too many options out there to have to deal with outright bonkers people. Not worth it. Good for you on walking away and getting half of what you needed. Your chances of success have increased exponentially now that you have the truck you need.

I am a senior now and the most important thing I've learned in life is that dealing with A-holes is never worth it. As soon as you pick up on it, end it right there.

He was trying to scam you by getting your cash asap, then refusing to release property by saying you did not pay him with a good check. Bet he has already scammed several others by now. True about gut feelings and being cautious.

I’ve always lived by the motto “if obstacles keep getting in the way, it’s not meant to be”. This has served us well through the years. When that inner voice nags, listen to it.

It was thanks to you & KYD, Less Junk, More Journey & a few others that I bought my rig last April & having listened to all the platitudes out there, I adopted a "I will deal with it when it happens" attitude. I was very lucky the man I bought my used one from used the same bank so money transfer was easy peasy.
Location, Location, Location.... There are times when you are not in control. If you end up miles away with a rental truck and your belongings on some one else's property, they have the upper hand. What are you going to do when you are at his doorstep, and he asks for a higher price? It's the reverse when you have the seller drive out to deliver and you find some issues that you will not pay the price. You're over the barrel. Either pay the price or eat your sunk costs.. Don't let anyone know your stuck. He doesn't need to know what you sold, what you rented, how far you drove. Let him think you can walk away from the deal at any time, even if you are on site.

I would have walked away at the first rude attitude from the seller; I don't pay attention to people like that. The good thing is that you are now happy and enjoy life and got a much much better rig.
Agree. We normally would have too, but it was a time where we were in a cabin with limited time to get a new rig with limited inventory due to the whole COVID thing and RVs selling like toilet paper was...so we felt a bit rushed. Luckily it all worked out. But you are right. It is a much better rig. We keep hearing from multiple people who have bought a GD fifth wheel, that they are not made as good as they used to be anymore. Post 2018 is what we have been hearing.
I know the feeling, my rig (2014 Grand Design 369RL) sold before I had a chance to get the new one so I know the feeling all too well. I never had any major issues with mine other than the kitchen pendant lights going out constantly and having to replace the bulbs. I am not blaming Winnebago because I do not know the real cause for their issues now but it appears that they went downhill after they acquired them.

Brian, I assume new and if you’re still close to the dealership, call your salesman, have him talk to the service manager. Ask the service department to activate the OCR feature on your new truck. Activating “Operator Commanded Regeneration” will help immensely with managing the timing of the DPF regens. Yes, your 2020 has that feature, it’s just dormant and requires a Ford service tech to hook up their odb2 computer and activate 2 settings in your trucks computer. (Factory software feature)
I negotiated activation as part of my purchase deal. Some dealers may charge a fee to activate.. and then, sadly some dealerships have no clue what you’re talking about.
OCR allows you to control when a DPF regen starts. Once activated you can disable “automatic” regen starts from the “settings screen”. If you’re city driving and dont want to interrupt an auto regen, click off auto regen until you’re in a good place, or on the road driving non stop at highway speeds for 20mins so you get a complete regen. Several good UA-cam’s on the topic, watch one from #EpicCowlick. Ford has an “official” video on it so this is not some “hack”. It’s a $250 adder when custom ordering a new Superduty.
Reason I suggest now .. you’ll likely be able to have this activated at no cost so close to your purchase. If you want more info you can pm me, I’ll happily chat with you and convince you that you want it. 🤓
Want to know if already activated?? ... in your trucks display, from the “Main Menu” .... select “Display Mode” ... and from the “Maintenance Manager” submenu scroll through the options you’ll see “Oil Life % .. “DEF Gauge” .. then (if OCR is active on your truck) your next option will be “Diesel Exhaust Filter %” then “ Tire Pressure Monitor”. If not active then you’ll see nothing between DEF Gauge and TPMS menu options.

Nice truck and we couldn't tell if it was a dually or not, but if so, name her Bertha!! That's what we named our new dually, Bertha Butt!! If it's a single rear wheel, my husband suggests Freddie.

Other crazy issues aside, you bought a truck and trailer unseen? Wow, not me. Risky is an EXTREME understatement.
It sure is GRC, but sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do. ALWAYS get a full inspection done either way, unseen or not. Of course it’s not a good idea to buy sight unseen and we would NEVER recommend it unless you had to like we did. Also, you NEVER have to drive away with an RV if you don’t like what you see. LJMJ did the same.

That seller was too much trouble from the get go, angry emails & voice messages, red flag 🚩. It's probably a good thing the deal didn't fell through, I believe in destiny. Persevere and you will get your rig like you both want.

My husband and I bought an RV from a private seller through Essex. 14 months later we are still trying to get our registration from Essex. The Rep told us private sales are harder. We’ve been Bank of the West customers for 20 years. Customer service has been horrendous. I hope this works out better for you. Good luck

You need copy of both front and back of the check to deposit it. We only gave him copy of the front. Once the deal went south, we sent the check back to our lender and the financing was canceled.

It was a case of simply giving him the benefit of the doubt being scared as a seller. Always try to see both sides.

You should of threatened to sue him for breach of contract. In Texas a verbal contract is good. You have the emails where he agreed to everything, I’d sue him for the extra expense.

That is the problem with using cashiers checks. Payment can be stopped. This is why I like to use an atty as a third party. Wire the money to the atty’s trust account and the seller signs the title and gives to the atty. Once all good, the atty gives the seller the funds and the buyer the title.

well for what it is worth. I just took care of an estate for a family friend. Banks are holding cashiers checks. I could not believe it.

Too many scams involving cashiers checks. Banks are forced to follow guidelines to protect themselves

Oh gosh! So sorry to hear what you guys went through. Something similar happened to us exactly a year ago. A private party was selling a nice Tiffin Phaeton. When it came down to the wire transfer, my banker told me that the account number of the seller did not exist. The seller insisted it was correct, but it wasn't. It ended up costing us $576. A month ago we purchased a Class A from our local RV dealer, just a few blocks away and completely happy with the sale and customer service. Good luck to you guys again.

If the seller is that crazy, then there is no telling what he may have lied about regarding the condition of the truck or the fifth wheel. Be glad you leaarned what you did before you spent too much money.

Better to work with someone where you BOTH feel it’s a win win anyways. Maybe next time a direct wire transfer? We’ve done this before because then the funding is there immediately.
We bought both the RV’s we’ve owned through private buyers and had a great experience on both ends.

Sounds like a scam. Hope you cancelled those checks with your bank/credit since he had the pics and numbers.
The checks were sent back to our lender and the financing was cancelled.
Thanks for this video. We have a uniquely equipped 5th wheel and truck we'll be selling in about a year (moving to a smaller, more off road capable travel trailer). Selling it ourselves to someone who wants to do extensive boondocking seems to make sense, but dealing with payment issues and "personalities" is making us shy way from doing it ourselves. We'll probably end up putting the 5th wheel on consignment and maybe sell the truck privately (or just do that as a trade in). We'll make less money, but saving the various potential hassles may be worth it!
Not all people or dealers are bad to deal with, we know. Just have to be cautious. Lessons learned along the way. 😁🤓
It can be really frustrating when things like that happen. I'm in the process of buying a used RV now and the seller was starting to get, well weird about checks, banks and the like. I solicited the help of a lawyer and had a purchase contract drawn up spelling out exactly what and how things in order will happen. After sending it to the seller with a pelite and professional letter stating basically if you're serious about selling, sign please and return to me. He did and now we're moving forward. It's unfortunate that steps like this have to be taken, but these are the times we live in. You're probably on to something better anyway, so chalk it up to an irritating moment, not a set back. RV's are the worst thing in the world too buy,the minute you drive it away its worth 1/3 of what you just bought it for.
You’re right, they are not a good “financial” investment, they are a memory investment for your soul, spouse or children that you take along with you, making very important and lasting memories that will last forever after you are gone...whereas your money never lasts and doesn’t leave much of a heartfelt memory for whomever you leave it for. Well...maybe some it does. 😂 Bottom line is, we all have opinions and some things mean more to them than they do to others. We’re guessing those that don’t like RVs don’t watch an RV UA-cam channel though...unless...they have some hidden agenda. 🤔 😂
They are a mobile home base. I would never buy new.
Oh man - I can totally relate. Making a significant purchase from a private seller does take its toll- banks are very slow on transferring funds which is frustrating in these automated times. I like “Fred de Ford”

Sorry to hear about your terrible experience. You didnt deserve to be treated so badly. I think that you dodged a bullet. Imagine if you needed to get something repaired. I think you are better off not dealing with that person, period. How could you trust anything they told you about your RV if they were prone to that type of behavior. Good things happen to good people and I see a great new rig coming your way. This guy that caused all your problems lost out making a deal with a great couple. I bought a new home three years ago and became good friends with the seller.

Hey guys!! We went to the Tampa RV show. Felt very safe. They only let one family in to tour at a time. We were outside, everyone wore masks. It was good. Anyway, we learned to check out dealers the week AFTER shows, because LOTS of people upgrade and you can get lots of deals. Good luck!! There’s one out there with your name on it!

Oh man that's a terrible experience. Sorry to hear you went through this. I recently sold our RPod to a retired Marine (I'm retired Navy) and between his bank and him, I felt almost like a criminal throughout the process as they both showed they just had zero trust in me. Military to military usually implies some level of trust (one reason I accepted his offer), but emotions trumped. But we finally got the deal done then he showed up in a Honda Ridgeline w/o a brake controller (required by law) to take possession and accuses me of not telling him he needed one and I should "give" him the one in my vehicle. That didn't and couldn't happen (wiring). But yet, so many people are willing to screw someone, the private seller market is difficult to navigate. I agree as I went through a mess selling a used phone on eBay. It was such a mess, I will never sell on eBay ever again, and I will never buy on eBay ever again. Big difference, I know though.
