That entire movie was special, and Sheen's portrayal of Lee was spot on.
Love him or hate him, R.E.Lee was a man to be respected and listened to at the very least.
So, why don't many folks respect and listen to what he said ?!?
Lee said, against civil war statues,
"Best to not leave open the sores of war."
He also told his men, after Appomattox,
"Fold the flag and put it away, or else it will be devisive." 🇺🇸
@@nickroberts-xf7oq deification? their need for their martyrs perhaps?. Not to mention the whole "the lost cause" mentality. Or maybe just out of that "My daddy was a hero" thing.
Whenever I see Martin Sheen now, I think of him in Gettysburg
He’s always Captain Willard to me.
Sheen’s portrayal was wonderful. The scene of him on the horse as the troops cheer him on brings me to tears every time I see it and my mother’s family fought for the Union at Gettysburg.
Sheen's portrayal of Lee was horrible. All 5'7" (at best) of Sheen, looking up at everyone else, does not show the type of presence you expect from Lee. Horrible.
I agree with you that Sheen's portrayal of Lee was wonderful. The scene which you alluded to was an outstanding one.
i believe that scene was not scipted.... (at least that is what i read here somewhere)
Lee when he was in charge of the Confederate Army was 5’10 at most as he suffered from I’ll health and was over weight
He came across as a bit fanatical in places ( 'our men will prevail'), but immediately waliked it back when reality hit.
What I'm confused about is the accent. It sounded more 'southern' and soft than gent, but that might be what Hollywood is used to, because the actor who played genral Pickett appeared with a more gentryfied cut glass accent.
Does any know if the this is what Lee might have actually sounded like
ua-cam.com/video/swifvJEOF6s/v-deo.html
I think it was very profound what Sheen said about giving the command to send men to be slaughtered. What it must have done to Lee, Longstreet, Pickett as well as Northern Generals. I think Sheen’s portrayal of Lee was exceptional.
yes, he's a master of his craft
Sheen did a phenomenal job as Lee and today when I think of Lee I see Sheens face.
It is said that Martin Sheen, playing Robert E. Lee, had a kind of *spiritual moment* in the film: Gettysburg. In a scene just before Pickett's Charge, General Lee (Sheen) is riding his horse thru the Confederate troops (re-enactors) as they respond with cheering (as it was planned for movie). However, this cheering grew to became so tumultuous that it rose to the level of the actual event. It both shocked Martin Sheen and intimidated him to feel the love of the troops for Lee. .{also in retrospect was a compliment to his portrayal of Lee}
I am a retired career military officer and Lee has always been one of my heroes. George Washington is another great man from history I admire greatly. They are similar in the fact that they both led men in battle against overwhelming odds and the fact they were absolutely revered by those they led.
I was a "background artist" (extra) on the set the week they filmed the Pickett/Pettigrew/Trimble charge. I well remember that event.
The scene was not planned
The only Lee portrayal that was actually authentic.
The gold standard of Robert E. Lee on film. An absolutely perfect performance by Martin Sheen. If you read about Lee, especially the biography by Freeman, it becomes clear that Sheen captured his essence to a tee.
The Civil War was the last war where conspicuous courage and honor could turn the tide of the entire battle
This guy Lee went to Gettysburg and marched 12 thousand of his guys over open ground in broad daylight right into the muzzles of 122 Yankee cannon and God only knows how many massed riflemen behind fortified positions...This guy was either nuts, or had a real penchant for recreational chemistry...
Dayum, what a professional. Just awestruck watching him effortlessly switch to Lee's drawl and then to JFK's Boston accent. Amazing actor.
What an inspirational story! My friend met a carpenter who had Martin Sheen as a client. I heard that Martin is a great guy.
@The Coding Gal, Thanks for sharing! He was very generous to join for this interview
Excellent interview! One can see that that Mr. Sheen is comfortable, and willing to talk. And that's your credit, man. I think the role in the scene where the soldiers cheer for General Lee is spectacular. The actor seems to be thinking: "I don't know if I want this responsibility." And I find it difficult to express it convincingly. Listening to him in the interview, we can understand what the actor was thinking about, right at that moment in the film.
On the other hand, that scene reminded me of his work on "Apocalypse now". In this movie, Sheen played some masterly scenes showing his moments of doubt. By the way, in one of the best scenes in "Apocalypse Now", Martin Sheen coincides with Robert Duvall, who played General Lee in "Gods and Generals." And in my opinion Duval did an excellent job as well, playing Lee. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the thoughtful and generous comment!
Martin Sheen is extraordinary.
Martin sheen had a beautiful interpretation of Lee. I just rewatched the film and wonder if Lee was as obsessed with winning a large battle on northern ground as they portrayed. he was almost offended with longstreets suggestion of retreating their location to gain access to Big Round Mountain...
The really clever thing is at Gettysburg Lee wasn't Lee in the sense that his decisions weren't typical of the man. He was determined to win at any cost because strategically he had refused to relieve Vicksburg. He had to win and that sense of being driven comes over very well indeed
thanks for sharing!
My great grandfather fought for the CSA as a cavalryman under Morgan. Tough guys
Wonderful depiction of a Great American Hero!
That scene of Gen. Lee scolding Gen. Stuart is a classic scene in the movie. Even though not well documented very believable.
All I could think of during that scene was "Grandpa's mad at Jeb !"
He had the spirit of R.E.L. like a stern but caring grandfather. Loved it
He kills it love him as General Lee.
yes, excellent
How can you say that!? He was awful! For starters, he is about a foot shorter.
Brilliant brilliant actor: Martin Sheen is still one of my all time favourite actors. 👏👏👏👏👍👍👍
Sheen was excellent as General Lee in Gettysburg. Robert Duvall, on the other hand, played him like a block of wood.
Just love Martin Sheen. What a great actor and man. The Killer Angels is a great book. Movie based on this book.
thanks for sharing! He's great
After the war, Lee's plantation was taken over and became what is known today as Arlington National Cemetery.
I thought that happened during the war.
As an insult the government at that time buried Union dead in his rose garden.
@Paulie Boy Thus un to traitors. No sympathy from me.
It was actually taken over during the war. After the war the family sued the US government for damages and won. They then sold it to the government and moved out.
53,000 killed, wounded, captured or missing....not just killed.
I love this movie and Martin Sheen was perfect in his portrayal of Robert E. Lee.
for sure
Lunatic remark.

Great interview thank you for posting. I had family on both sides of Civil war fighting. I'm native american, scot,Irish, Norwegian, English, italian mix. I thank my mother for the extra mixture but I father was Cherokee. I always admired, Stonewall,Jackson, Robert E Lee and General Grant. Martin Sheen and Robert Devall amazing Lee performances. Tom Bergencer forgive my misspelling of his name he deserved an Oscar for his performance as Longstreet and he should of been in God's on General movie as well.
I think Martin Sheen portrayed Lee very closely to what Lee probably was, A very humble, religious gentleman, still possessing a fierce temper when provoked, such as when he rebuked Jeb Stuart after his disappearing act.
I've read A LOT of history about the Civil War and even read Douglas Southall Freeman's four volume history of Robert E Lee and that said, the way Martin Sheen portrays him in Gettysburg is EXACTLY how I've always imagined Lee was in real life. Saying his portrayal was exceptional is still a vast understatement.
"Exceptional" is not an understatement. That's a great compliment and description
If you ever get to the town of Gettysburg, the mass produced trinkets of REL, all look like Martin Sheen. That says something.
Duvall, much more effective in persona, accent and appearance. Lee was 6’1 and stout. Sheen’s a small squirrey guy with a terrible imitation of a VA accent.
Duval did a far superior job.
So well read! Still has such a profound knowledge of that moment in history! Love it
Glad you enjoyed it!
I always think of Martin Sheen as General Lee in Gettysburg.
What a very fine actor mr Sheen is, I remember the first movie a ever saw him in when I was a boy, The Final Countdown. I asked my mom, who that actor was and she said Martin Sheen, I became a Martin Sheen fan then. I remember him in a movie where his son did some stupid thing and got in jail, and he said “let him stay there tonight, learn a lesson” and he couldn’t get him out for weeks after that and his passion and anger at not being able to help his son was so believable.
Interviewing Martin Sheen must be one of the easiest and most frustrating jobs in the world. "So Martin how did this thing come about?" ..... hours later your next words are "Well goodbye and thank you for your time!" It would still be a treat.
I have to bust out the old DVD player to watch the movie again. Love it from start to finish. Are there any interviews with Tom Berlinger? Watching both Martin and Tom together is great. This is a wonderful interview. Cheers 🥃
glad you enjoyed this. Tom Beringer would be fun
One small error at 9:18: 53,000 men were not killed. 51,112 were casualties. The Union had 3,155 killed, 14,529 wounded, 5,365 missing or captured. The Confederates had 3,903 killed, 18,735 wounded, 5,425 missing or captured. Given about 10% of the wounded died of their wounds, and 10% of the missing or captured were either already dead or would die of their wounds while in captivity, the total dead was around 11,000
thank you
Interesting. Do you happen to know the breakdown for Shiloh? I’ve always heard 25,000 casualties in 2 days, but hadn’t thought of it in the way you broke it down.
@@melodymakermark Sure: Beauregard officially reported 1,728 killed, 8,012 wounded, and 959 missing, a total of 10,699. The recorded Federal losses for Grant's and Buell's armies were - 1,754 killed, 8,408 wounded, and 2,885 missing, for a total of 13,047. As with any battle "missing" is a nebulous term, could be dead and the body unaccounted for, could be a POW, could have deserted. "Wounded" also has several meanings. "Mortally wounded" is a soldier not killed outright but who survives for hours, or a few days before dying (Armistead at Gettysburg for instance). Some wounded return to duty after a recovery period (Barlow at Gettysburg was thought to be mortally wounded, but did return to duty). Some wounded never return to duty. Some wounded die of their wounds weeks, months, or years later.
Thanks for that. I live within 100 miles of the battlefield, but haven’t seen it in 35 years. Gonna try to get there in April.
I love this man❤️!!!!
I wish I could meet him !!!!
What an amazing interview Sheen was incredible in Lees Role The Film was powerful yet tragic but one i found truely awesome and sheen was award winning .Grat interview
thank you very much!
He was awesome
He did a good job.
for sure
Not sure if I agree with the assessment that Lee was shy. Perhaps reserved would be a better word. Shy indicates a withdrawing personality. To be able to inspire people as he did, especially towards the end of the war indicates a forceful personality that he held in check due to upbringing, but could unleash it when he had too. Also he was a vestige of the Revolutionary War Gentlemen due to his family. People deferred to that group.
Lee was a hero.
Maybe an introvert
What did you think of Martin Sheen's character transformation to play Robert E. Lee?
He did a great job I think. Obviously none of us met Robert E Lee, but i think Sheen captured the essence of what I feel Lee could have been like. The charismatic, quiet, religious leader with all that success.
I think that there is no time for that.
@@theaman42069 There is no time!
One of only four actors who seems to have actually become their characters. the others being Tom Berenger, Stephen Lang and Jeff Daniels
@@trajan231 - Sam Elliot was amazing as well
"Perhaps i have not made myself clear" the clip with jeb stuart was excellent and excellent acting.
Actually Gerald Ford pardoned him because Lee's paperwork was misfiled....great interview

He did a great job portraying Lee!!!
Mr sheen is spot on here Lee was un-reclassified very gentile… ppl of that ilk were very very proper every sentence thought out. Very formal he did an awesome job!
I grew up with Martin’s Lee. Wonderful. To this day, when I imagine Robert E. Lee, I put some qualities from this betrayal in it. Right or wrong I can’t help it.
thanks for sharing :)
I love the movie, and he did Great!
agreed!
Incredible Actor and fantastic movie.
“I could not, in good conscience, raise my fist against Virginia.”
General Robert E. Lee
He was amazing as General Lee ❤
Though I'm not a fan of Sheen's politics, I am a big fan of Sheen as an actor. I remember Sheen from as far back as the 1970s. He's played good guys and bad guys and always does well. I saw him in Gettysburg and I thought he did a fine job, though I was more impressed with Jeff Daniels as Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.
Despite the criticism, I loved Sheen's
portrayal of Lee. 🎉
I love all these comments about how perfect his portrayal of Lee was in the movie. I would love to talk to all you folks that met General Lee and know how he spoke and carried himself, I have soooooo many questions!!!!
Great Interview Martin. Thank you. - 53,000 casualities in Gettysburg does not mean 53,000 died. The word casuality is a combination or Deaths, Injured, Missing, Captured and Desertion. There were probably around 35,000 wounded and 7,000 killed combined total.
Nice studio!
@TJ Blaidd, thanks! what drew you to this video?

I think he did a good job, reading about his part as Lee. IF you want a really good southern accent listen to Shelby Foote,, It's not a Hollywood put on accent he was the real deal. Next in line would be Robert Duvall,,,Damn good!
thanks for the thoughtful comment
Shelby Foote is an excellent example of the Mississippi Delta accent, and of course it is genuine, but the accent of Northern Virginia (and thus Lee) is quite a bit different from it. They're both southern accents, but that term covers a very broad range of accents.
The man is a genius pure and simple as well completely complex.
I love him,was great as General Lee.
He has some great insights on Lee, amazing. Though his statement that Meade was a gentleman and would not attack a retreating Lee because it was un-gentlemanly is incorrect. If the Army of the Potomac was in better shape after the battle, and some pre-battle reinforcements were available, he would have smashed Lee. The Union essentially had only two Corps close enough to full strength so waiting the extra day to refit and reorganize was the only option.
He is a good man !!! How Charlie let him down I'll never know?
Substance abuse doesn't care if your father is Martin Sheen.
It would not be an exaggeration to say I've watched Gettysburg six times. Watched once just to convince myself the guy playing Lee could not possibly be the Martin Sheen of West Wing. Still not sure I believe it. That, my friend, is the definition of an actor.
Good old Tom Berrantin his good friend lol
Martin was a great Lee- I enjoyed lang and Jordan very much
Here's what gets me about Gettysburg, Gods and Generals, ect......native Virginians (Lee, Jackson [actually WV now], Longstreet, Stuart) do not sound like we're from South Carolina!
haha
Martin sheen will go down as one of the acting greats, in the same league as spencer tracy.
I saw another program talking about the civil war and this historian said that when the soldiers retreated. They walked backwards because to be shot in the back would have looked like they were cowards and
Running away
To keep one's honor in battle was
Strong . The south was on the wrong side of history to be sure
8:39 He lived a honest life.
9:16 53,000 Men died over 3 Days at Gettysburg.
He didn't need a wig. Lee had a comb-over.
It was more humane to attack during the retreat to stop it, once and for all.. would have saved hundreds of thousands.... Martin's perspective on what he terms "chivalry" (General Meade) is interesting....
I thought Sheen did great as Lee. Just my own opinion of course that's all!
Having Sheen portray Lee was meant as an insult to Lee's memory, Ted Turner's insult.
As much as having Jane Fonda portray Nancy Reagan was meant as an insult. I think Sheen was chosen because Pauly Shore told them no.
Robert Duvall who played Lee in the 2003 prequel Gods and Generals was originally picked to play Lee in 1994's Gettysburg but he didn't have time because he was working on another movie at the time. So they went with Martin Sheen instead. How is having Martin Sheen play Lee an insult to him?
It's bollocks that Meade didn't pursue and attack Lee after Gettysburg because of some misplaced chivalric view about hitting someone from behind. He didn't do it because it would've left him in danger of violating his orders to keep his army between Lee and Washington DC. Granted, if he'd been bold he'd have shattered Lee's retreating remains and ended the war in the east in a matter of weeks, but technically he'd have been disobeying orders to do so.
It was interesting how when other actors flubbed their lines, and dropped character, Martin Sheen stayed in character
There is a a passage in the Tao Te CHING that of a general entering a great war battle and looking at it as if going to a great funeral, I can see these type of gentleman seeing it that way too, yet if you were in a ruthless war(all out war against food, water, manufacturing, retreating soldiers, warmth) such ways could not win the day....
Hes equally Capt. Willard, Gen. Lee and President Bartlett to me
I think Martin Sheen is a good guy even if I disagree with his politics and think they work only in fantasyworld.
Get you a man that looks at you like 5:32
Ford pardoned Lee and Nixon at the same time
that's interesting
For such a liberal, I was always surprised how Sheen took the role of Lee AND did such a masterful job...must have needed the money LOL
A Democrat that knows the cause and seems to respect general Lee. Honestly it warms my heart
Any respect for a person with such a low character as Lee is a reflection of poor judgement at best.

Sheen was brilliant as lee, surprisingly Robert duval who played lee in the follow up gods and generals was poor I thought
I felt Sheen became Lee for the movie!!!!!
I’d have to say you know little about RE Lee if that’s your belief. Duvall’s father was a Virginian born Rear Admiral in the US Navy assigned at Annapolis , Md ., home of the US Naval Academy. Duvall,s mother was related to the Lee’s family. She was a member of the “ Lee Family of Virginia .” He admits he’s no fan of Lee however his portrayal of the Virginian, R.E. Lee, was derived from actually having Lee blood. Sheen seemed to me a modern day actor trying to make Lee look utterly doubtful. Typical Hollywood revisionist tripe. BTW Lee is no hero to me.
No metals were struck for the southern soldier because they all were heroes. Besides the ones in Texas.
It's very hard to play a person who seems larger than life. Sheen probably had the most reasonable facial hair.
Cheers to him staying a good Catholic!!!!
Sheen’s performance was outstanding, but his knowledge of Lee and the War has surprising and significant gaps. Example, he states 55,000 men died in the battle. Completely wrong. There were 55,000 killed, missing or wounded. 7,000 men died in the battle. Sheen should know that Lee graduated from West Point second in his class. More importantly, he remains the only cadet to graduate without a demerit. I’m not a fan of “the Cause,” but Lee’s record at The Point says a lot about his character. The statement that Meade did not pursue Lee after Gettysburg because of “honor” is pure fiction. The North had already won a major victory. The army was exhausted and the chase would have been risky.
☢️ Daddy Jelausy too 🎟
He was a great Lee, however, his history sucks worse than his politics. Lee never met Lincoln, the OFFER of the AoP field command came from Winfield Scott. Lee did not turn that down to become the leader of ANV, he was given command of Virginia's state troops and then became Jefferson Davis military advisor before Joe Johnston was wounded at Seven pines in May 31 - June 1 '62 and Davis appointed Lee commander of Confederate forces in Virginia and officially changed the name to the ANV. Lee did NOT lose Arlington, it was never his, his father in law left it to his grandson and Lee was the executor of the will. Nobody lost their citizenship, they lost their rights until they were pardoned and Lee did not get pardoned before he died in 1870. Giving someone a posthumous pardon seems ridiculous to me. He was named President of Washington College in Lexington, VA in 1865 and it later became Washington and Lee University. Lee would be considered young to have died at 63 TODAY, but the life expectancy was about 64 in that time, so that would not be YOUNG in 1870. His notion that a general would NOT hit his enemy when he turned and fled is just RIDICULOUS, you follow up a victorious battlefield with cavalry and strive to destroy your enemy, that is what Napoleon would have done and Lee and Meade and all of the rest were taught Napoleonic tactics. Meade didn't attack, he claimed, because his men were worn out, not because of chivalry as Sheen lies about. His idea of warfare at the time being UP CLOSE and PERSONAL is again, ridiculous, because before the invention of firearms, the up close and personal wars were actual my shield wall against your shield wall and the KING or General was right up there in front. If is CLEAR that his knowledge of history is appalling at best and non-existent at worst. At NO POINT even had the ANV won the battle of Gettysburg, would this have given the south a victory. Once Lincoln made the Emancipation Proclamation, the British people would NOT condone the British Govt to side with the south, the British people had been fighting for abolition for nearly 50 years at that point. If Lee TRULY believed that, it is further evidence of how flawed a strategic thinker he truly was.
17 miles of wounded and Ford pardoned him
they have disgraced travelers grave
Sheen did a basically perfect job playing Lee. The fatal problem is that he does not LOOK like Lee. In particular, Sheen has narrow, almost Asian-looking eyes -- probably from his Spanish ancestry which has significant Arab admixture. So no matter how exquisite his upper-class Virginia accent, no matter how subtle his portrayal of Lee's reserved nature hiding a volcanic temper, etc., his glaringly visible non-resemblance is a constant scene-ruining irritant. Casting MATTERS.
Tom Selleck doesn't look like Dwight Eisenhower either, but was perfect for "Ike, Countdown to D-Day". Excellent movie!
Duvall was a far superior Lee.
No way!
Gods and Generals was pure garbage
Supposedly, Duvall is related to Lee. He was awful.
You know nothing of history. Lee spoke slowly with a cultivated, genteel accent- one that Sheen could not master; Duval did. Lee was 6’1, Sheen’s a shrimp!

Martin Sheen was a total miscast in the movie. He looks terrible in the saddle
His portrayal was terrible.
His Southern Accent was lamentable. I like Martin but his
performance cannot compare with Daniel Day Lewis

Remember who won the war.
False notion. Napoleon lost the war against the Coalition, yet no intelligent person would deny he was a great general.

I’m from Alexandria VA where Lee grew up as is my father. My dad was born there in 1911 and heard first hand stories from men who fought in the Army of Northern VA. He was appalled by Sheens accent in the movie. It way to “Deep South”. Northern VA did have a specific accent but it was not that! It’s not Sheens fault but the coach’s.
