Picking a Medical School? Here's What You Need to Consider!

  • Within the next month, the incoming medical students will have to pick a school that they want to attend. This video is intended to help show you the factors that you should consider when you are picking a medical school. There are a LOT of things to remember, and I wish I had remembered/known about all of these factors when I was deciding between medical schools (not that it would have changed my decision tbh, but still really would've changed my experience!).
"For many applicants, choosing a medical school is similar to the process of choosing a college/university. Many factors should be considered when choosing medical schools such as state residency restrictions, the mission of the school, curriculum, GPA & MCAT score, cost, admissions options, and location. It is important to note that choosing a medical school is an individual process and you should not apply to a medical school simply because of pressure from others or because that school has a high ranking. Fit is an important aspect of a successful application to medical school." Source: career.berkeley.edu/Medical/A....
Another thing to remember is that, another way to know what factors to consider is to remember the following questions:
    - WHAT PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS PASS THE USMLE STEP 1?
    - HOW MANY GRADUATES MATCH INTO A RESIDENCY PROGRAM?
    - HOW STRICT ARE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS?
    - WHAT PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM THE PROGRAM?
    - ARE THERE OPPORTUNITIES TO DEVELOP PERSONAL INTERESTS?
    - DOES THE PROGRAM PROVIDE SUPPORT SERVICES FOR STUDENTS?

02:26-04:16 - What Doesn't Matter as Much as You Might Think it Does
04:16-06:09 - Cost of Medical School (TRUST ME ON THIS)
    - I discuss the average debt that a medical student usually graduates with. This is VERY important to remember! The least expensive route to obtain a medical education is attending a state public school. In addition to giving in-state applicants preference for admission, public schools also charge lower tuition to state residents. Private schools may be more generous about awarding scholarships than public ones, so when assessing medical school costs, also look at the average indebtedness and percentage of students who receive financial aid at a school (you can find this information in the MSAR for MD schools and the Osteopathic Medical College Information Book for DO schools).
    06:09-09:17 - Feel of a Medical School
    - What are the personalities of your future classmates?
    - Mission: "Although all medical schools aim to educate knowledgeable, competent, and compassionate physicians, particular schools may place a priority on research, primary care, social justice, and/or service to disadvantaged populations. Such schools look for applicants whose backgrounds and experiences demonstrate that they’d be good fits for the program."

I'll have to disagree about prestige. Now that Step1 is p/f, if you go to a big name school that is also p/f, you are more likely to match into a competitive specialty compared to someone at a non big name school with similar grades. I do agree that the most important should be cost. If you can go somewhere for free, do it.

Not necessarily. You’ve overemphasized the value of prestige on residency decisions

Another insightful video! How would one get a feel for a school with interviews being online? Or can you effectively get the feel for a school from zoom meetings?

Hi Prerak! I just got accepted to Yale Med Class of 2026. I was wondering if you would be able to talk about the clinical rotations at Yale. Is it done by a lottery system and are some of the rotation sites far from campus?
