I used to volunteer in the ER. I was told no food or drinks because someone might require on x ray. Anyway, one day two teens are in there, male and female, chowing down on fries with ketchup, smelling up the place. I go over and explain that no food or drinks should be consumed until after they have been seen as it could interfere/prevent them getting the help they needed. The girl says to me, "oh no worries, I am here for the morning after pill, I have had it before, it's fine".
I was horrified. First, there are other people in this room besides you, second, the morning after pill is not to be used as regular birth control.
I saw things in the ER.
Once during a flu epidemic, staff overwhelmed, extra nurses and doctors brought in, every room taken, hallways lined with gurneys, some middle aged man marches into the emergency from the waiting area, walking past the people on beds in the hallways to yell at staff because he was waiting a long time. Crazy!

Awesome-thanks! Do another one about how many diseases show up in the ER and that eating is a fabulous method for transmitting all KINDS of infections to yourself!

No see, you're SUPPOSED to have your family smuggle in a few double cheeseburger meals while you're in the ER for abdominal pain/nausea.

Then vomit on the floor - next to garbage can - and blame staff for not coming quickly. Yet those food smugglers are sitting there....

I remember my mom saying yrs ago my dad asked her to sneak hamburgers to him when he was supposed to be eating a certain diet at the hospital.. she said when she denied it they showed it to her on camera. She said she was so embarrassed. Meanwhile I'm just like why go against doctors orders 🙄

Excellent explanation! I worked in the OR and all the time people thought we were just sadists for asking if they had eaten or drunk anything since midnight (or six hours if an afternoon surgery), and cancelling surgery if they had. You can die, people! We do surgery to improve your life, not to try to take it. It is a big deal!

Mmmm, dry turkey sammie! Someone asked me to toast it for them, and I knew that my patience and/or career journey was coming to the end. 😅

You know, after all of the years of me “teaching” clients the reasons why we do what we do, and asking if they understood and knowing in spite of their confirmations (that they understood) that they in fact, did NOT understand; I think if I’d of ended my little teaching sessions with an emphatic, “That’s why mutherfuckers!” I’d of probably gotten through to so many more patients… thanks anyway! From a very happily retired BSN.

PTs telling me 'but I haven't eaten in 5hrs!' like this is medically relevant for 99% of people is one of those ER mind- enema specials that hurts my soul every time...
