what about the party scene did you not like? too many parties or not enough? or just boring parties? also these are exactly the pros and cons i think of when i think about transferring to umich so thank you for reiterating it as a current student :) good luck this semester!

The school spirit can stay with you for a life time, even if you drop out of the College of Engineering, like me. ;-) You say less than ten minutes from class, but if you got stuck up on the North Campus and had to ride one of those buses to Central Campus, you'd see things differently. I know I did. I liked your video. My advice for going to UM would be to find an apartment as soon as possible. Don't allow anything negative that might happen in a dorm affect you when you're just getting started. The dorms are traditional, but there is risk in that tradition, depending on who you are. I loved my time at Michigan, anyway. However, something to keep in mind is that UM is one of the stuffiest and staunch schools when it comes to the administration. If something goes wrong .... it takes lawsuits and people camping outside the President's house to affect change. I guess the key would be to keep your head down and don't let anything negative suck you in. Even if you are being wronged, run and get out of that situation. Being in an apartment will shield you some from potential dorm drama. It happens. Finally, no matter what, do not accept a dorm room on the north campus. Don't do it.

It's not going to happen to everyone, but you don't need dorm drama. It is best to avoid it. Don't let a university be educator and custodian of your living situation--that's giving them too much leverage over your life. Hold on to as many rights as you can. Socialize in class, groups, clubs, libraries, computer labs, or whatever. Dorms can be convenient, but the cost of that convenience can be having your study time absorbed by--or being distracted by--controversial situations. You do not have Wonder Woman's lasso, and so people will lie to protect their academic careers / reputations. You can't have a camera and record everywhere you go. It's better to have a private space where you have full rights to the space that you live in. Anyone who tells you differently never had their space / student rights / person / possessions messed with living in a group situation. ... and it happens ever year.

Congrats!! There is need-based financial aid, but not as much as a private school could provide. There is a food pantry called the maize and blue cupboard!
Maybe you are not aware of it but would you know how large the Muslim demographic is at Umich? I know there is a Muslim student association but I would just like to know the perspective from a current student. Also, are the students religious (Christians, Jewish, Muslim)? I am attending this fall as a CS major and I'm super excited, even though I am afraid I cannot find much religious people.
Sorry I don’t know the exact percentage but I know there are a decent amount of Muslims and there are many ways to get involved with religion here. It’s a big school so you can always find like minded people!
There is a substantial Muslim population in southeast Michigan. Also, I think you will find that most students are not religious, but you won't be out of place either because many Muslims attend Umich.
Hey, maybe you can answer a question that has been the cause of many sleepless nights for me. I have noticed that a guy from the Wolverine State is called a Michigander. So, does that mean that a lady from Michigan is called a Michigoose? Maybe someday I will meet a lady from Michigan, so I need to get the proper terminology down pat.
My nephew just got into U of Michigan, but because he's in New York and their Financial package wasn't that great. I believe he will be attending Yale because it's much cheaper.

I think michigan is pretty holistic. I know my app personally was more heavy on extracurriculars and I had a distinct passion. So do what you love and it will show through in your application

Oh, one more thing about academics. When you go to the University of Michigan, most of the undergraduates get brainwashed into thinking that graduate student instructors are normal for being a college instructor. In reality, you can go to other schools and have instructors that have already accomplished their masters degrees. Get taught by people that have not finished their graduate studies, or go somewhere else and get taught by people with industry experience and a master's degree? Aside from this, UM is a great place for a college experience. Those who only understand one brand of college experience might not be the best people to take Pro / Con advice from. The real truth about undergraduate studies at UM is that undergrads are cattle, not pets. While there are lots of opportunities at UM, there is also a tremendous social imbalance for under-represented minorities. You never really have the full "college experience" being in the "other group." It's nice to mix, but the real action is "birds of a feather." Sad, but true. There is a good sized Asian community in Ann Arbor, MI and in the school, generally, so it varies.

I imagine the experience of being a young lady would be quite different that that of being a young black male at UM, socially. How people relate to you. Just don't get stuck up on the North Campus. Being on the North Campus is like not being at UM at all, but a commuter instead. I lived in Bursley-Baits on the North Campus. Boo. You want your own apartment, or at least the East, West, or other quad. They built a new dorm. Personally, knowing what I know, I wouldn't stay in a dorm, or if I had kids, pay to have my kids live in a dorm. My opinion is that keeping things separate, school and housing is wise. You can have your privacy, and it cannot be taken from you by some pesky / overbearing residence advisor. Yeah, every RA is not a good person.
