    I saw this movie last night and it is so great. What I loved about it most was the sort of dreamy adolescent summer vibe. I read the metaphor as a kind of loss of that adolescents. Cool stuff.

    Most absurd part of the flick: they sneak into a decrepit, abandoned building to lure "IT" inside and kill it, somehow finding a clean, pristine pool area with fresh water and.....electricity? How in the world does such a run down building have such a well-maintained pool area that would put most private pools and gyms to shame? This movie had my girlfriend and me repeatedly uttering, "Oh, COME ON!" Skip this one.

    • @PrinceRapopy

      I'm pretty sure it was a public pool that was closed for the night.

      The Director also stated that the movie was supposed to feel like a nightmare and in our dreams things don't always make sense.

    • @michaelstevenmartin3478
      @michaelstevenmartin3478 9 років тому

      ***** Perhaps, but from what I remember they had to climb a fence that housed an old, run down building that looked 100% abandoned from the outside, only to find a pristine pool area inside. It just didn't make any sense, even when allowing for the "IT" part to be real.

    • @michaelstevenmartin3478
      @michaelstevenmartin3478 9 років тому

      Justin Powers I love absurd logic, but (ironically?) there's a way to do it and a way not to. I don't question light sabers in Star Wars, because I accept it's part of that world's reality, but in a movie like IT FOLLOWS it's meant to be much closer to home/reality, with some supernatural thrown in. The clean and operating pool just didn't match the exterior of the building, which jars some viewers who are doing their best to suspend disbelief for fun.

      The whole point was that their entire plan was terrible. It's impossible to electrocute someone with a hairdryer (or other home appliances) in such a large body of water. That's why there are electricity outlets close by pools (to enable machines to be put in to clean the floors and what not).
      As to the actual building itself, it isn't that big of a stretch. The city of Detroit might have invested in it before everything there turning to shit (financially speaking then). The city might then lack the funds to operate it, but still maintains it in case a buyer can be found or in case the economic situation improves so that they find the money to operate it succesfully.

    Just got back from watching this and Fast Seven. This movie was absolutely amazing. Easily my fav horror flick in quite some time. As far as the setting goes I would guess early to mid 90s. My reasoning being, while there are a lot of 80s cars, most of them look kinda beat up. The cops drive the rounder crown vics as opposed to the boxier kind which leans 90s. With regards to the clothes while there is a lot of denim which leans 80s, there were also a fair few flannels. No one rocked a cell phone, but that little flip device one of the girls was reading from certainly doesn't look like 80s tech. I suppose they could have been going for a timeless feel but I'm pretty sure it's early to mid 90s.

      It has a wide release now. It just had a limited release before. There are showtimes for almost all the theaters around me. I realize this was 3 weeks ago, but just in case you didn't know it got a wide release. This and The Babadook are two of the best horror movies I've seen for a while. Legitimately terrifying.

    I didn't read this as an STD allegory either, but I did make note of each supporting image or metaphor that supported the thesis that it works as an STD allegory (and there are certainly a lot).
    Personally though, I read it as a condemnation of premarital sex. It's set just outside of Detroit (a Catholic-concentrated area). The sex is always between unmarried teens. In fact, the adults aren't around. It sticks to the teen's perspective (wisely, because teen actors can communicate fear very well) and the result is that it's like some kind of urban legend that teens tell one another about sex. Like all urban legends, it operates as a warning. Even the scene where all her problems begin is the iconic sex-in-the-backseat-of-a-car (I can practically see the storyteller's cautionary finger-wagging as she gets to this part). The casting, I think, also supports this. They didn't cast Taylor Lautner types as her friends or a Cara Delevingne lookalike in the starring role. Obviously, I disagree with Christy; I don't think this girl is remotely beautiful -- but she has exactly the right look for the important suburban setting and the even more important age of the target audience. Her look is critical, because (as I'm arguing) this movie is a message addressed to the average young girl (girls who will relate to her based on looks), so the sense of kinship is crucial to drive the fear home.
    The nasty fluids coming from the vagina could be read as an STD metaphor, sure, but I think of it more like what the Exorcist was trying to convey by the use of foul liquids coming from her mouth. It's like a kind of tangible pestilence. An impurity. Also, for a movie entirely about sex, notice that the sexual situations are purposely not hot. You don't get titillated by the sex scenes (not even the first sex scene). The way that it's shot, the grinding motion really does remind me of various movies about demonic possession and exorcism. There's a lot of STD metaphor in there of course, but I think that's part of the anti-sex soapbox. If the movie, for example, was just specifically about STD paranoia, I think the sex scenes would've been purposely hot and impulsive (so that the post-coital regret is about indiscriminate indulgence as opposed to being about unchastity).
    The nudity is also very obviously nonsexual by design. It's always the supernatural entity and it's always shot to look appalling or horrifying or threatening. The image of the naked old man on the rooftop (tracking us as we drive by) sends a really effective visual cue that the penis is threatening. He's old, he's naked, he's hairy, and his posture is imposing. It's a really well-done visual association of the feeling of dread with the male sex organ. Likewise, when the entity takes female form and there's nudity, we get the same kind of repulsion from the naked breast that we get from the naked penis. The exposed breast is as jarring and threatening even though we're used to seeing breasts in movies.
    That post-coital scene where they ask each other whether they feel any different.... look at their faces. I know that the explicit meaning of that look is fear or apprehension (that they feel no different) but metaphorical meaning is like regret (the kind of scene in those abstinence-only videos).
    The image of them holding hands in the end (in a symmetrical shot of them walking side by side) is an unusual way to end it. Since the whole movie was clearly written to allow for figurative meaning, I can't help but wonder what that scene is supposed to represent. Is the conclusion that they just decided pass it back and forth between each other and run from the entity together for the rest of their lives (rather than die alone)? And if that's the takeaway, then isn't that a monogamy pitch?

    So, I finally got a chance to see "It Follows" and I did enjoy the movie. One thing which I like was the pacing of It Follows as the build-up will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting for that BIG moment to happen. Furthermore, the ending was downright terrible, but it was quite a cliffhanger (per say)... possibly sequel. Only time will truly tell.

    Really cool movie. The music was INCREDIBLE...total '80s synth throwback, and so damn effective. So effective, in fact, that I'll buy both the film and the soundtrack.
    Even though the film has a strong '70s vibe, it clearly takes place in the present because Annie uses a cell phone at the beginning of the film, and Yara is reading The Idiot on that weird pink shell compact/birth control case thingie.

    I don't understand how in the beginning the girl died and it showed her dismantled yet when it showed the neighbor die he was dry humped to death. The two deaths aren't similar and it's confusing. Also when they were at the beach it grabbed her hair yet when the neighbor opened the door "it" jumped on him. If someone could share their thoughts that'd be great

    Really dug this movie. I didn't find it so much scary as I did creepy though. The score by Disasterpeace (Fez) is excellent! It's essentially John Carpenter's Halloween soundtrack if Carpenter used the same synths as Vangelis did on Blade Runner. If you go in realizing it's not actually set in the 80's you'll probably like it more but it's influenced by them obviously.

      Rusty Shackleford I was confused by that too. As the director explained it, no they didn't kill it. (spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet!) The last scene shows her and the boy holding hands indicating that they are in a relationship and as we saw before she has sex with him. This implies that they are just going to keep "passing it" back and forward between each other so that thing can never get either of them. Pretty clever actually....well in the short term. That's why I think that this is one of the very few horror movies there should be a sequel to.

      Claire Ando When I saw that, I thought of it as the two are going to live together with this thing following them. I think it kind of ties together with the scene where she has sex with Jay and she's talking about her fantasy with some cute guy and they're just driving with nowhere to go. In that last scene, they're walking and it sort of indicates the feeling you've had throughout the movie of where are they going to go?

    • @mangaas
      @mangaas 8 років тому

      +Claire Ando Actually, [ SPIOLERS !! ]after Paul purposely gets it from Jay just before the ending, you see him driving, looking for hookers. Their plan was to give it to him, so he can go give it to the hookers, who will most likely spread it to multiple people within an evening. So I'm thinking that was their plan.
      We also have it inferred near the middle of the movie that she swims out to go have a gang bang with those fishermen, and what do we see on the roof of her house ? Naked dead dude, cause y'know... *it follows.* no matter how many times they try to just pass it off, it kills that person, and comes back.
      Even if they successfully pass it on and it spreads without coming back, it follows, and eventually those people will die, and it'll come back for them. The person following at the end of the movie could just be a normal person, but it's just showing how they will never be safe again.
      Then again, the director could have been trying to infer something else, that's just my take on it.

    I was really looking forward to this movie because the reviews were so positive. I usually agree with WTF, especially with Christy. However, I was greatly disappointed with 'It Follows' for several reasons. It is grossly overrated. It isn't a bad movie, just really overrated. It isn't that scary either. The Conjuring was much better.

      Stephanie Gunst interesting. i thought the conjuring was super overrated and lacked a lot of substance. it was scary but nothing stood out in that film

      The Conjuring was a good horror movie, definitely, but It Follows scared me a lot more personally. The Conjuring, while very good and entertaining, felt "cool" not so much scary. I just find this whole "something is following you but only you can see it and it can look like anybody and it will follow you for the rest of your life (even if you pass it on, it still comes back to you sooner or later)" absolutely fucking horrifying.

    • @MrChaseBlue
      @MrChaseBlue 9 років тому +1

      For me, The Conjuring was a lot scarier because of the orgy of jump scares but It Follows is more horrifying in the sense that the horror stays with you more as it's deeper and connected to the film's themes that you can draw to real life.

  • @zschambill
    @zschambill 9 років тому

    Any scary movie that scares you does its job. So I would never say any scary movie is shit. But horror movie needs some horror in it, I think It Follows does the job well. The concept is interesting, and it is not like jump scares that gives you one shot and that's it; it keeps the intensity at certain level during a long period of time, and the last scene is pretty good--you're so screwed that you can't tell if anyone is the follower or not. If you're watching a horror movie and you're looking for logic flaws, you don't have the proper mindset, go watch a thriller like gone girl.

    I found this movie to be kind of boring and not scary. The threat just didn't often seem immediate. And when it did become an immediate threat it was underwhelming and predictable. Not a horrible movie but I preferred The Babadook. This one plays out more as a drama. The score, while working well with the image on screen, was to loud in my cinema as well which took me out of the movie. I understand how this can scare people, but I wasn't one of those people. Still, if you are interested then check it out, maybe wait to rent it though.

    How did this movie even get a green light? What producer in their right mind would have said yes to this? How did this get an R rating? The whole script felt like it was written by highschoolers. There was nothing scary or creepy or suspenseful throughout the whole movie. The music actually made the movie worse. I know it was an homage to the 80's horror, I always thought their music was terrible too

    I was just ok, but the end, there is no end. Another cowardly way a movie can't think of a good ending so they just cut in the middle of a scene and the credits come up. Pissed me off. I want to go to a movie being entertained and leave satisfied, not waste my time and money to only have no ending. Oh wait, that's the way movies are made today.......your suppose to use your imagination. Screw that!!! That just pissed me off and I left very unsatisfied!!!

      Robert Downey I believe that during the end, when the chick and her friend are walking down the street, you can still see someone far off walking behind them. I think it's meant to hint that despite them thinking they killed it, it's still following them.
      I personally was also pretty dissapointed by the ending though.

    • @scentlessxapprentice
      @scentlessxapprentice 9 років тому

      Thanks for replying, but yeah i understand that but i thought maybe there was more to it. I get its still following them after being killed but that just seems cliche, for lack of a better word.

    • @jessechuff
      @jessechuff 9 років тому +1

      I mean, it wasn't really killed. Not from what I saw. And honestly there wasn't any real way to end it besides either dragging it out even longer (which wouldn't have been good) and "defeating the evil" which is also very cliche. If it actually got killed, I think I must have missed that part. I just remember the girl having sex with her friend, her friend scouting for hookers (and they never say whether he had sex with a hooker) and then they are walking down the street together. I think it was a great ending and basically the best way they could have ended it. Killing the guy in the pool didn't mean they killed "it" entirely. They shot it before and basically killed it, but it still came back. I think they just wanted to leave the ending to our own devices. Not in a lazy way, but because the only other ways they could have ended it would have been dragging on or cliché.

    • @ericthompson5213
      @ericthompson5213 9 років тому +2

      Robert Downey I thought it was a good ending actually. They basically leave it to play off your own psyche. When they are walking down the sidewalk at the end is that "IT" following them or are you just so paranoid and its just a normal person. There's no real way to know if they actually killed it or not. Which i thought was a good move so they could make a sequel. There's no doubt though that the soundtrack made this movie. Such eerie music throughout, i loved it. Disasterpeace

    • @jessechuff
      @jessechuff 9 років тому +1

      Eric Thompson although a sequel would be great as long as the same directors/writers/producers and such are involved, I hope there isn't a direct sequel. I think this movie stands on its own INCREDIBLY well. I'd be all for the same people working on a totally new, creative horror movie though. It would actually be interesting if they implemented the same thing that AHS does with the same actors, but totally different scenario and story. I don't like AHS that much, but I love how they do that whole thing. I'm definitely interested in future projects from these people regardless.
