The Human League - Don't You Want Me. 1981
With a hit album and three hit singles in a row Virgin's Simon Draper decided to pull one more single from the album before the end of 1981. Their choice of "Don't You Want Me" instantly caused a row with Oakey who did not want another single released because he was convinced that "the public were now sick of hearing The Human League" and the choice of the "poor quality filler track" would almost certainly be a disaster, wrecking the group's new found popularity Virgin were adamant that a fourth single was going to be released and Oakey finally agreed, on the condition that a large colour poster was given away with the single because he felt fans would "feel ripped off" by the 'substandard' single alone.
"Don't You Want Me" was released in the UK on 5 December 1981 and to everyone in the band (and especially Oakeys) amazement it went almost immediately to number one and remained in the UK charts for 13 weeks. The success was repeated six months later with the release of Dare in the U.S., with "Don't You Want Me" hitting number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Billboard magazine ranked it as the United States' sixth-biggest hit of 1982.
The lyrics were originally inspired after lead singer and front man Philip Oakey read a story in a "trashy tabloid". Originally conceived as a male solo, Oakey was inspired by the film A Star Is Born and decided to turn the song in to a conflicting duet with one of the bands two teenage female vocalists. Susan Ann Sulley was asked to take on the role. Up until then she and the other female vocalist Joanne Catherall had only been assigned backing vocals; Sulley says she was chosen only through luck of the draw.[1] There are two more realistic reasons for her choice, that Sulley was the better singer and/or that Catherall, a very introverted character at the time, shied away from the role.
"Don't You Want Me"
In 1981 record company Virgin were becoming aware that promotional music video was evolving into an important marketing tool, with MTV being launched that year. Because it was agreed that the video for Open Your Heart had looked "cheap and nasty", for "Don't You Want Me" they commissioned a much more elaborate and expensive promotional video than for any of their previous releases.
The music video for the song was filmed in Slough, UK in November 1981 and has the theme of the shooting and editing of a murder-mystery film, featuring the band members as characters and production staff. Due to it being a "making of" video, the crew and camera apparatus used within appear throughout. It was conceived and directed by filmmaker Steve Barron, and has at its core the interaction between a successful actress played by Susan Ann Sulley walking out on 'film director' Philip Oakey on a film set. It is based on the theme of the film A Star Is Born. Shot on a cold, wet, winter night it was shot on 35mm film instead of the cheaper video tape prevalent at the time. Susan Sulley states now that Steve Baron was heavily influenced by the cinematography of the promo video for the Ultravox single "Vienna" and used it as a benchmark when shooting "Don't You Want Me". Steve Baron was also influenced by François Truffaut and his film Day for Night and because of that the clapper board seen in the video bears the inscription "Le League Humaine" as a tribute to Truffaut. The video is credited for making Oakey, Sulley and Catherall universally known visual icons of the early 1980s. The video was released in December 1981
Thanks bro! I go walking with an autistic client and a Jbl flip 6 portable speaker around Whangarei, New Zealand and she asked me to play this. The sound is excellent! great job on the tweaking!
Thanks so much!
I find it hard to believe there will be another
decade like the 80's in human history.
I'm so happy I was a teenager at that
time.
I would live in 80is, Time of Yugoslavia and good music for us damnnn i wish that
+Matic Crickett (Slovenija) i dont understand why he hates
i am not a teen you idiot...
the quintessential 80's pop song. That beat is way ahead of its time. 80'S music was in a league of its own. I don't care what anyone says it was the best decade for music. My top 5 favorite of the 80's.
I just love creepy 80's songs.
More like a vanity, narcissistic vibe. Fabulous video, too.
I was 17 and with my friends we were crazy about this song. We couldn't stop to hear it again & again & again...all those nights long, non stop !!! I still have the 45 RPM vinyl record and it's impossible to get separated from it !
I wish I can wake up in 1982 every single day of my life! I LOVE THE 80's. Just by thinking back makes me want to cry!!!!
I was born in 1957 and a DJ in the ´80´s. The music that we played then was fun, happy music, great songs like this one and many, many ,more......
Oh, I agree with you 100% on that. This was clearly an era when music videos were worth tuning in to. The videos themselves ranged from obscure to downright bizarre, but at least they all had their share of gorgeous women in the background. And of course the music tied it all together in a wonderful little package.
Philip Oakley has a wonderful voice and he stands out!!!!
This is one of the truest songs ever made. When it's over and you don't want it to be.Why don't you want me I still love you.
the 80s were the most important times of my life, i loved it all, 45 now and still mad for the 80s.
In 1982 (Sept) I turned 7. Still recognised back then that this was a special tune.
"Where were you in 82?" - In my mums ovary.
I was in my dads balls
i was 18 years old, i knew everything about everything, if only i knew what i know now!
Fernando Diaz same! Ball buddy
1st year secondary school God and we danced to this on a school trip to Butlins In Phwelli (think thats right if nit sorry) ahh happy days
I was also 10 too back when this song was christmas No;1 in the UK. I remember that winter of 81/82 being extremely cold with very deep snow, Forecasts say this coming winter will be just as cold brrrrrrrr
I was 18/19 back in '81/'82 and didn't realize at the time that those were the good 'ole days...today I've got two bad knees and a bad back to boot but still manage to move a little when I hear this tune...long live the '80's, we had it all!!
Born in 1992 and iv'e gotta say this is by far my fav song of all time!!! Damn you mother for listening to Absolute 80's growing up!!!!!! Why cant they play this in the clubs????
The Greates Music Video Ever Made.
This song and video set a benchmark that everyone else followed for the next 15 years.
I'm 41 now & loved 80's music too much. I have collection of 80's song that i cherish so much and I do shared this music only with my 80's friends... love this song
1982 - my god where has my life gone! Love it!!!!!!!!
The musical and rhythmic complexity of this song is just hitting me.
I was too young to be able to enjoy or take in music like this. All I saw was seemingly endless reels of videos with weird people in them doing weird things, all the while I waited for the SKY trax to be over and, and I could finally get may daily Transformers fix. LOL
Now as a 34 year old, it brings back some incredible nostalgia. For an instant I'm a little kid, back in the living room couch with my favorite Transformers toys while waiting for my favorite show.
questa x me e' la vera canzone anni 82/84. ho lavorato nella piu' bella discoteca d'Italia 7up di formia. questo pezzo mi fa ricordare gli anni piu belli della mia vita.
GRAZIE
At the time I was only 12,but this is one of the top iconic songs of the most iconic years in music history / 80s era !!
i love this song...! i was 12 yrs old...and i wanted to runaway from home to live in london....lol....funny thing though..i had a grt life...lol...in the mind of a child...
the 80's are still alive & well thx to youtube and the fans...cheers mate !
For those of us from southern California . . . we all remember this jam played endlessly on the Mighty 690! Loved that station!!! Long long long ago!!
Seems like yesterday, it was a good time to be a young person, freedom without judgment, and the music was out of the box...
I was a teen listening to this in the 80s - Happy days! ;-))
Still listening to this since 82! ;)
I was 22 (1982)...And I lived in the south of Chile. One of the countries with more views of this video. Because of Phil I still wear the haircut and comb myself the same way he looks here. Funny thing, since I never thought of that until now. I even like the way he dresses...a combination of "Dark" and "New Romantic"...something that I still try to do...I'm almost 50 now and people says that I don't look that old...life has been generous to me...
im 19 and i love the 80's.. just great music.. i could listen to it allday
In 82, was 21 yr old student on art foundation course in Blackburn - this was on the local pub Juke Box, we played it all the time:-) Brings back happy memories.

man the 80's were fun. I was well into my twenties and that was the best time to hear all the newest hits coming out. Almost everyday the radio would bring a new hit tune to the airwaves.
Goodd Godi remember dancing to this in the nightclubs it played everywhere,,,classic 80s band and tune,,best music around the 80s hence the millions of viewers on more or less all the 80s music tracks people have kindly put up to share with us all

Hope you still are at 65!!
I was 16 when this came out, some great music in the early 80s - Soft Cell, Human League, ABC , brings back some of my best memories , was up to a lot of good stuff while these songs were out.
Great sound quality on this vid as well .
80's=best era for music!
cool song, was 10 at the time. Remember dancing at school disco thinking we rocked, so innocent. So many good tunes in the 80s, can we not just rewind and have them all over again.
The 80's rocked!!! A true classic!
I was a senior in high school when this song aired! Talk about a way back moment...
Christmas No.1 in 1981, the year I was born. Nearly the perfect pop song, shame about the video but then I look at it from the perspective of someone who grew up listening to music in the 1990's. Great track, thanks for sharing it.
In 82 I was eight, trying to watch the "keep feeling fascination" video as much as I could cause I had the hots for both girls in the Human League. I also loved Teri Nunn from Berlin. Both bands put out some great pop music.
Thanks for posting.
REALLY bad day at work, however a beer and listening to this, cheers you up and brings you back to the 80's
Just great to read through comments that are respectful to the artist and the era. 80's was great and the music was too. As a person born in the 60's it is refreshing to read comments from those born in the 90's who enjoy this music in preference to later styles.
One of my favorite songs from the 80's, great era
Definitive 1982 New Wave video & song. Perfect. Really captures the era.
I have had their music ringing in my head for a few days. Thanks for posting
surely the classic song of the decade.
I remember striding into the disco with this on with my legwarmers on.
there is true magic in 80`s songs luv it !
@thebbeenn ... out of 5,731 comments, yours is one of the most original!
I remember meeting a woman who had fond memories of the 1991 World Series - and the Minnesota Twins winning on Kirby Puckett's home run in the 6th game to beat the Braves, as her parents were at the Metrodome - and she was at home loosing her virginity with Puckett's game winning "dinger" playing out in the background!
Win Twins!
I love this song so much, i always listen to it whenever its on the radio while im driving my car...thanks for posting the video clip, i appreciate it a lot! Saved to favourites and rated it 5 stars.
fantastic song, and wow the memories!! Graduated in 84, this was one of the songs to my life! Thanks so much!
Great to see it span the generations! I'm 54 and fell for a girl who had the same hair cut as the blonde in the video and looked like her - she WAS working as a waitress in a cocktail bar at the time - and I was a bouncer at the bar! The song has been "ours" since, but a few thousand miles from each other. Cheers! (Teach it to your kids some day!)
I remember this tune at the fun fair, i was 9 years and it gave me goosebumps, always now!
man i really miss the 80's,thank you for sharing this..
I was 25 and working in a noisy steel factory, every once and awhile you could hear the radio over the machines, brings back memories.

I love this song so much!
I was 12 and the music back then blew my mind, they sure don't make 'em like this anymore.
i was 12, on a school ice skating trip to peterborough ice rink when this came on the radio on the bus. I woke up from my childish nonsense and realised there was a world out there.
And then there was this. Was given the DARE album for Christmas and my life changed (a little bit)
Will love this tune forever more, and more so the album.
Did they know they were changing the music world with that album at the time? That era of electronic music ROCKS ! ! !
