Why don't you change the spacing within a single bed in a single year? Go from 6 inches on one end to 1 inch on the other, reducing consistently. That will give you the most scientific results.

    • @ShooprDoopr
      @ShooprDoopr 4 роки тому +2

That's what I was thinking too. You can't publish your results without a control group, Luke! ;) The control helps you account for other variables (e.g. temperature, weather, soil quality, etc.) that might vary year to year.

I love your garden and your gardening videos Luke! Starting to do gardening myself here in my country Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur). Used to happily garden in Logan, Utah when I was a student there in 1990s. Every summer Utah State University would rent a plot of land to students for a just a dirt cheap fee of USD20 per semester, free watering provided (sprinkler system)..200 plots for 200 students..came evening it was a great social gathering at these plots, we would garden and socialize with neighboring gardeners, exchanging produce..

Well done with all that beautiful garlic!!! It is funny to hear you are toasting at 87F when it remains above a 100 from July to September here :)....Cairo Egypt. I don't have a garden and I try to grow in pots on my balcony, and I have to thank you for all the info I have been getting over the years since I started growing from your channel. This is my first year growing garlic. I planted in late November. It's just know starting to grow much faster. I also use the back to eden method which keeps me from having to water most of the year because the ground below the wood chips is always moist. Now I do have to comment. I watched several of your videos on garlic. The first one you said you can just buy the seed garlic in the store and didn't really have to buy it online. Lol.

I planted a bed the same size as yours. I tried shallots for the first time this year also. I planted both hard and softneck. You answered my questions as to why some heads were big and some smaller. I have peeled and frozen some and plan on dehydrating and making my own minced garlic and powder. I'm pretty sure I did mine about two inches also mainly because I had so many cloves to plant. Garlic is probably my most favorite crop to grow (along with tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes and okra). I also like the element of "Surprise" when you plant vegetables that grow under the ground!! Some people might be interested in seeing what to do with garlic after it is picked (drying the heads).

I am a little south in Killeen/Ft Hood area, it’s been brutal. My garden’s only saving grace this year is that I’ve done a somewhat decent job of making my soil more fertile and so moisture retention is better. I go out very early or later at night, the day heat is too much for this northern native.

In Permaculture gardening, you learn to also strategically place your garlic, onions, & chives around your plants that you need to deter pests from the most. I border all my gardening areas with garlic and onions. They WILL grow just about everywhere. I get heads this size in Missouri (with our really hard nasty clay soil) in areas wehre the sopil has not been ammended with anything. I only put them in ammended beds when they are there specifically as a pets deterent. They don't even need all that soile ammending.

  • @jubilee1181

Absolutely amazing! Thank you for the extra tip at the end. I already know what to do with garlic, but it made the adventure feel more complete. What are you going to be planting in that bed next? And will there be a rest period of any kind in between? I know you don’t like to leave the soil exposed for too long. Keep up the great work! These videos bring me so much joy to watch even though I’m not learning too much, just because I’ve been watching you for four years😊

To maximize the harvest without wasting the inner cloves could you plant the outer cloves, and use the inner cloves for granulated garlic or dried minced garlic? You would get the best cloves in the ground, without wasting, and preserving some garlic for use after you run out of fresh garlic.

I have made a lot of Garlic chive powder since the bulbs don't get big for me. To me, growing Garlic just for the bulb is a waste of growing space. I would cut the green parts off and salvage the non woody parts. Then use some fresh, or dried and ground. It all tastes like garlic. People should also try eating pre fertilized Leek and Onion blossoms to.

.......the miraculous garlic imbued with centuries of healing energy replenished the Ancient Elk's mana, restoring his youth and vigor. He returned to his herd, challenged and defeated all who dared face him. Immune to injury, illness and old age, he is The Defender. To this day, he rules and protects his herd with the wisdom and compassion gathered throughout his long life. Every morning he looks upon the old garlic field and offers a prayer of gratitude to The Creator of All Existence and renews his Vow of Friendship to the humans who unknowingly planted the Everlasting Allium. Congrats on that awesome garlic crop. I'd like to try to plant (a little bit) of it myself. I like the idea of planting in the fall for spring growth and summer harvest. Thanks for showing us!

I was sadly disappointed in my three plants. First time growing it but my bulbs are only about the size of a quarter. Can I replant these in the fall?

I purchased some of your garlic last year and just harvested - first time attempting to grow garlic. I've done something wrong - they're very small (about the size of a marble). I want to try again this year - what did I do wrong? Zone 7b.

Anyone know what Epsom salt is good for ( on plants) wondering if any other gardeners have used it.

Roughly 3 to 10 months depending on the variety and conditions

Such fun! Zone 4 Canada here, so 2-3 weeks trailing you. The scapes have looped so I will cut the scapes today. I planted 9 rows of 12-15 cloves in early Oct. 99% made it. Cultivars: Red Rezan, Susan Delafield, Majestic, Great Northern. It's nice you share your harvest, I do as well. Everyone, if you haven't yet, please grow a little garlic! It is such a joy to see it peeking through the straw come spring. A tiny 2' x 2' space can yield lots! 6 rows of 6 = 36 cloves! That's with 4" spacing.

I planted 144 cloves or garlic. Mine will be ready in the next 2-3 weeks. I am just concerned about storing it. Have never dried garlic before

Hi ! I just lay mine out on a table on my covered porch for a few weeks or less...It helps the paper skin develop so they store longer. Hard neck doesn't store as long(around 6 months) as soft neck. If you want the BEST Garlic Powder, peel your garlic, run it through your food processor to make a slurry, put slurry on fruit leather trays and dehydrate it until crispy dry, then grind in your blender to the consistency you want (granular to fine powder) ! You will never buy garlic powder from a store again ! I'm down to my last tablespoon of my garlic powder ! I better get harvesting !!! :} (NE Ohio, zone 6a) UPDATE...I just got in from harvesting All of my garlic...Now to wait for it to cure ! :D

I know you’re in Michigan but I’m in Los Angeles Ca and I was wondering if you had a video for crop for different climates/seasons.

Unless you have something that is day length specific, grow what you want when you want in L.A. Citrus too. Water cost is your only limitation. Probably a good place for his core garden bed method.

Rob Kinney thanks! I love these videos but sometimes he talks about winters and over here, it’s summer time part 2 during that season

Two years in a row my garlic hasn't grown. Last year it disintegrated, this year it did nothing more than send up shoots. When I harvested it, it was still no larger than the single clove I planted in September. I have no doubt it's been the stock I've been buying, packaged, organic shipped up from a company in Florida. I'm definitely looking to buy from a farmers market this year.

Where are you located ? Hard neck is better for colder climates as they over winter better. Soft neck is better for warmer climates. What kind did you plant ? Hard neck gets scapes if that helps you identify...

Congratulations on a phenomenal garlic harvest! Mine was ready here in DE, two weeks ago. I bought one head of hard neck from a local farm, it had been grown in my state. I planted 6 cloves for the fun of it and I was not disappointed! I cannot wait to plant more in October! Hopefully I will be able to order some from your store!
