- DECOUPAGE BEGINNERS! Join me, Amy Anderson, as we discuss everything Mod Podge Dimensional Magic - a resin like product that is acrylic based, so not as toxic as regular resin. Use it for your scrapbooking and typical resin crafts!

It's a very introductory course to Dimensional Magic - no projects, just a discussion of what it is and showing how to use it. - Навчання та стиль
I've only used Mod Podge 3 times but just bought some more supplies. I'm from northern NY in the woods and off grid.
Cool product. I should have picked one up today.
Love, love, love your shirt.
I hope you enjoy using it!! And my shirt is from Amazon! :D
I’m in NYC and work w polymer clay. I am severely allergic to uv resin, found out the hard way, and I’ll never touch it again . I’ve used Mod Podge before and am hoping that I can get a similar finish with one or more of these products. I had a bottle of dimensional, bought a long time ago, and I did use it on one of my pieces and was surprised that it actually moved like UV resin. I have a way to go to use it well but I think I’m sold! Thanks for this video. I’ve subscribed.
Great tips/video! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I use it to decorate oyster shells after I apply glitter nail polish, rock salt, beads, pearls, etc…I then apply dimensional magic and for the most part it works great but you have to cover all the beads, etc that you place on the shell. I did have one or two that came out a bit cloudy. It’s definitely a learning process.
Hi Pam! It totally takes some time! My only recommendation that you might be doing, so it isn't cloudy, is that you apply thinner layers letting dry between each. Also don't let dry under a fan or in too cold of a climate. Good luck!
NC here. You can really see the difference between the scrapbook stickers! I've used all the ModPodge products except this one. Now that I see what it can do, that will change!
Wooo! I hope you enjoy!
Thanks!!! This is very informative
You're welcome!
I cut out a tiny iPad from the stuff that came with an iPad and painted over it to make a cute Barbie iPad years ago.
I loved using Dimensional Magic, and used it for some small ornaments for the Christmas tree. I made about 30, and put them in a box after they had dried. I was very happy with the result, and happily showed them to my daughter 2 weeks later. However after another 3 weeks, about a third of them had gone yellow. I tried to work out the cause, but I haven't been able to figure out why some were yellowed and others were not, as I used the same process for them all, and they were made from the same base materials and stored the same way. The Dimensional Magic had been applied to store bought stickers applied to acrylic painted and sealed wood circles. The wood circles were completely dry and sealed. The stickers had been coated with mod podge and dried before applying the Dimensional magic. As you can imagine I was disappointed, as a lot of work had gone into the project. To rescue them I then had to sand down the yellowed items to get the yellow coating off and then applied UV resin on top as I didn't trust the Dimensional Magic I had used. I thought perhaps the product I used (I used 2 bottles) may have been "old" (bought from the same store at the same time and used at home within a week, but it could have been that one of the bottles was old on the shelf in the store). I would love to try Dimensional Magic again, but I'm a bit concerned about ruining a project again...
I've never had Dimensional Magic yellow like this - was it the exact same paper, exact same paint? It's hard to say. Were the ornaments made in China? Sometimes those yellow depending on the quality. What you can do is contact Plaid: plaidonline.com/about/contact
They make the product and could check the lot #s, and help you get this sorted out!
@@ModPodgeRocks The ornaments were wooden circles from our own tree (seasoned magnolia) , and the stickers were from the same set, all made in China. The dimensional magic had no direct contact with the wood that I can see ( which might cause discolouration from tanin in wood) only the painted surfaces with stickers applied. The acrylic paint was from Ranger. I still don't know what caused some to yellow and others not, but I wonder if it might be to do with drying time and differences in humidity on different days. It was humid here. I might have to do a few project tests to see if there is a variable causing this.
@@Lia_T it's so strange. I wish I could help! Please let know if you discover anything. I honestly have no idea what could've caused it with all things being the same :o
Hi I’m from Minnesota! I use dimensional magic on acrylic blanks to make keychains 😊
I want to try to use it too do you like it so far? I’m trying to stop using resin since it’s toxic.
Great idea!!
Very good. I was looking for an alternative to resin that is not as toxic.
Yay! Glad you found me.
Love Mod Podge...just discovered it this last Fall.
Yay! Glad you're here!
You may have answered this somewhere but I just found you and you explain things really well and are informative. I paint wooden blanks and I've found that when I've used other mediums to top coat, makeup ribs of on the back and I'm looking for something that people can be wiped down with a damp cloth without smearing or ruining the paint on the back. Do you think this may be a savior? Lol 🤣 thank you ahead of time.
Yes! This could work for sure. I will say, it's pretty tough though I'm not sure how much wear and tear the blanks will get. I'd try this first because it's easy to apply and non-toxic. If that doesn't work, you'll have to likely move to resin: modpodgerocksblog.com/mod-podge-dimensional-magic-vs-resin/
But I think it should work!
Love your video! I'm making earrings with a wood base and scrap book paper. Do I have to seal the paper with regular mod podge on top of the adhered paper before adding the dimensional magic? How thick should I cover the earring with the DM? Also, does the DM yellow over time? Thank you!
I would seal with Mod Podge so that the DM doesn't get underneath and buckle the paper. Make sure it dries for quite awhile (a few days) before applying DM. Seal the edge (where the paper meets the wood) well. You can't really choose the thickness. What you CAN do is layer. So you can put one layer down - let dry - see if you like the thickness and then apply another layer on top. It can yellow but it takes FOREVER to yellow. I have 13 year old jewelry that is not yellow. :)
Thanks so much!!
Thanks for the Video! I can't wait to try this. If I want to add glitter and add another coat. You have to let each layer dry correct? Thank you!
Correct!
G'day! ;)
I'm looking for something to toughen and seal cardboard board game tokens, covering both surfaces and the edge(s).
Could you sand Dimensional Magic, to flatten the surfaces? Could you achieve a matte or satin finish? Or could you then buff it, to bring back the gloss?
And how would you suggest sealing the edge(s)? Could you use, say, regular Mod Podge on the edges, in combination with Dimensional Magic on the surfaces?
Any other tips you would suggest for this kind of project?
Hi Sean! I don't know that much about sanding Dimensional Magic. You could only get a shiny finish as far as I'm aware. You could seal the edges with regular Mod Podge and put DM on the top - but I'm wondering if you wouldn't want to use epoxy resin. I think that might be more suitable for your needs. Check out epoxy resin - you can sand it too.
Does it matter if I use mod podge matte or gloss to glue and seal in this bezel project you did in this video?😊
If i use another glue in my project (like elmers or tacky glue) will dimensional magic work as well and cure clear? 😊
Melbourne Australian :) thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
Can I use this as a glossy sealer for a wooden sign I made with letter transfers on it - or can regular Mod Podge be used instead?
You can use either one! They provide different effects. You'll only get 2 oz. of DM in a bottle which - depending on how large the sign is - might not be what you want to use.
Hi, I'm from Sweden! I am making shrink plastic and got me some dimensional magic but it looked a little cloudy in the bottle, I haven't actually used it yet. My bottle doesn't have a tip tho, so I'm thinking about geting a pipette but I'm afraid that there wil be alot of air bubbles, I'll see what I do! UV resin is way to expensive here, and also a UV light just costs too much.
It does look cloudy in the bottle but should dry clear! If there are air bubbles, poke with a pin. And don't shake the bottle!
Thanks! I was actually hoping this would be like brushstroke mod Podge. I think that is discontinued now? Is anyone able to recommend a product similar to it? Thanks!!
Brushstroke is discontinued! After doing a little research, I found a medium I think would be great to add to Mod Podge: www.amazon.com/Liquitex-Professional-Flow-Effects-Medium/dp/B001US2NT2/
I haven't tried it, but I think this would help give the oil painting effect.
It great to coat the Eyes 9n my figures mixes great with Food Coloring
You can even add a second coat before
The first one Drys.
Reflects like glass
Thanks for the info!
Hi! I’m glueing paper images onto brass metal with mod podge, do I need to put glue over the image as well before applying dm? I noticed in the video you applied dm on the image without sealing it? Ty!
So if the image is laserjet, you don't technically need to seal it before adding the Dimensional Magic. If it's inkjet printed, then yes. It's all about the image bleeding, which you don't want. Check out my blog Mod Podge Rocks for more information.
@@ModPodgeRockshello :) just adding to this question… Can I add dimensional magic to regular photo paper? Or do I need to seal it first?
New subie just found your channel was making my first set of chipboard ornaments then thought I wish I had something to finish it with then found an old bottle of dimensional magic unopened :O. So here I am any advice?
Thanks for subbing! I wrote a post with tips - I think this will help: modpodgerocksblog.com/mod-podge-dimensional-magic-questions/

Can you apply an htv after you have sealed project with dimensional magic?
Hmmm - I have never tried this. I'm not sure if it would work or not!
I use mod podge for glittering and of course, decoupage...in Oregon
Thank you for watching! Glittering is the best use!
I'm from the philippines and I came across it on shopee. I want to try it to "seal" acrylic paint and paint marker on acrylic keychains. Will it do the job? I wanna know before I buy.
It will! People use it for keychains all the time. I will say, it's not as durable as resin. But it's still durable.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
I'm so jealous of your T-shirt. I MUST have a Mod Podge t-shirt! Are they for sale anywhere?
Hi Tanya! Yes they are! Amazon: amzn.to/3c22lsN
I know this is an older post but I still hope you can help me. I am making different products like acrylic disks and also paint and glitter on wooden disks. So I am wondering which mod podge I can use best for finish?
No worries! It depends on what you are looking for. Regular Mod Podge Gloss works well to attach glitter!
@@ModPodgeRocks ah ok great. I have used the ultra gloss spray. Would that be okay too?
@@katertje41 that shouldn't be a problem!
Hello, could I possibly use regular mod podge as a dimentional glue?
Hi Patricia! No it is just for decoupage. Only DM is dimensional!
👍 When the material has hardened, could I possibly remove it later? If yes how?
Hi there! It really depends on what you put it on and it might ruin the surface. For example, if you put it on paper, it will tear the paper if you remove it. Wood, you might be able to soak it and pop it off. I would consider it relatively permanent, though if you HAD to remove it you could.
@@ModPodgeRocks Many thanks for the answer!
Hello, I have a question. After my mod podge dried it had like little cracks on it. How can I avoid this mistake?
It shouldn't dry under a fan or in too cold of an environment. The material below it should also be completely dry!
Can you use it in silicone molds to crate items ?
The answer is "maybe" - it doesn't really work the same as epoxy. You would have to layer it and it would be small molds. Plus those items couldn't get wet . . . it's still an acrylic product. My advice is use resin.
@@ModPodgeRocks good to know, thanks!
can you use dimensional magic on plastic and acrylic?
Hello! It really depends. I have done it successfully, but a test is pretty much always required with plastic because of the various compositions of plastics. They're all very different!
Hi, I tried to use Mod Podge I waited 24 hours and still they have a clouthy looking, it's not cristal clear like it says :( did I used to much?? or is the Mod Podge??? Because when I touch it it's dry, should I wait more time?? like 2 days?? I'm not sure, because one of the Keycharms I made it's been 2 days with the Mod Podge and still doesn't looks cristal clear
i also have the same issue and would also want to know the awnser to this
Hello - Is it regular Mod Podge or the DImensional Magic? If it's cloudy looking, it would likely be from moisture underneath the DM. You have to wait until whatever is underneath is fully dry before applying.
@@ModPodgeRocks it was mod podge dimensional magic I bought and used. And it's been days now and it still looks clouthy 😂😭
I ordered this from Amazon but it is coming out extremely cloudy I let the project dry for two days as I read somewhere that the project may not be dry but it is still coming out cloudy and ruining my projects please could you help me.
Hi Kate! Usually when it comes out cloudy, the thing below it isn't dry. Could that be the case? Did you use paint or other Mod Podge below the Dimensional Magic?
My dimensional magic is showing hairline "cracks" under the coating. I noticed it on the back of my earrings after I took them off for the day. Do you know what might have happened?
Hi Ellen! So . . . did you Mod Podge anything under the DM? and wait for it to dry? Sometimes if there is moisture underneath it causes the DM to crack. You can send me an email amy @ modpodgerocksblog.com
@@ModPodgeRocks I mod podged on top of paper I had adhered to a wooden blank and then put dimensional magic on top.
I'm from Canada! And I have not used this yet :)
Thanks for watching! I hope you try it and enjoy it!
do you know of a cheaper version of this or a way to make it because i want to do it for my art students but its going to be priced out for 500 students. thanks
Hi! I would contact Plaidonline dot com. They make it. I have no idea about the formula, etc.
can you use these for acrylic 2 inch keychain disc
Yes you can!
Portland Oregon and no I've never used dimensional magic but I've used regular mod podge for 30 plus years
Thanks for watching! You'd love Dimensional Magic. It's definitely an interesting product!
Can you add acrylic paint or other colors with this
Does it add shine if I use it on my resin dominos
It does! I'd try it on one and see if you like it before doing all of them :)
Can magic be used on air dry clay to give it more durability?
can you use this as a sealer on canvas?
You can but it's a small bottle. I'd use resin instead if you're doing a large area.

هل يستخدم لإصلاح الزجاج المكسور كمادة لاصقة ؟
You won't want to use it on broken glass. You'll want to use a resin: www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-fix-a-crack-in-glass/
Can you use it on baked polymer clay
Yes as long as the baking is done . . . you can't bake it :)

Thank you for watching!!
I use to use this and after a year or so, this stuff became extremely cloudy and I did NOT have any moisture under it. This stuff is horrible long term.
Sorry you had a bad experience! That's never happened to me. There are probably other factors that contributed but I don't have enough information to know.

I cannot get the dimensional magic to apply without bubbles ALL over 😭
Hi Melissa! Are you shaking it? What I would do is leave it upside down and see if some of the bubbles leave. You can VERY gently tap it on the table too to pop some of the bubbles. Never shake it.
Run a lighter over it quickly to pop the bubbles works like popping bubbles in resin and paint pours
