What gear I use for Brompton bikepacking - an update! wild camp & chat about bags, tent, stove etc

- A couple of years ago, I made a film about the gear I use on Brompton bikepacking / cycle camping adventures. Since then I have a few new things. So in this film, I go on a one-night wild camp, and talk about what camping gear I'm using now and why - what is in my bags, my tent, sleeping set up, my faithful ancient Trangia stove and other cooking gear and my little larder, my chair, mini bathtub, and how I make pancakes and coffee for breakfast.
Some of my gear is gorgeous high-end equipment, some of it old now, but still great. Other things I use are homemade, and quite few of the useful things I have are items saved from the bin.
Everyone does things differently. This is my current way of cycle camping. Hope you like the film, including a little glimpse of Sweden!

Excellent as ever. One thing I do is if I boil any water for cooking, not drinking as you did for the potatoes. I drain the hot water into a container put a cover on it then use it for cleaning pans, plates, cutlery etc usually when I've finished eating.
Why waste it by just draining away and greasy things are hard to clean without it.

Reminds me of when I did wild camping in Sweden when I was 16, over 40 years ago.
On my first day I bought a Trangia and still have it to this day. We used open canoes to tour around lakes and rivers for a week. Lovely country 😊

I just watch your two videos of biking through Skåne, Blekinge and Småland to your cottage. Great videos and I just can’t wait to go out on the road again myself. I was just thinking about your Hilleberg tent. If you are scared of being seen if someone use a torch, perhaps change the guy lines to the tent (if you haven’t already done that) because they might be reflective. Just one thought. Hi Gert-Åke! aw thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the films! sounds like you have got a Hilleberg too. Ah I hadnt thought of changing the guylines actually... I realised though that the four corners of my Akto have got small reflective patches on, and there's a bigger reflective strip on the flap over the door too. If I am camping wild and think there might be people around I sort of twist the door one in, to make it less visible... I have thought about taping the four corners, but I havent... They are actually a great idea and useful sometimes! I have often been grateful for them actually when walking back to my tent in the dark looking for my dark tiny tent in a big dark field on a gloomy night! Anyway thank you for thank you for watching! and for writing!

Lovely video. I used to cycle camping years ago and watching this takes me back. One day I managed to tip a whole tin mug of just made, very hot, tea over my foot first thing in the morning bringing up a huge blister that made cycling very painful and that sort of put me off. Seeing you go through all your equipment reminded me of one of my proudest possessions for camping, a large piece of hessian sacking I found on the road side which made a perfect carpet for the porch of my tent. I used to be organised like you when pitching the tent so that everything was always in the same place so I knew where to find stuff. Thank you so much for sharing I really enjoyed the film. Oh that sounds fab Monique, hope you love it, heading off by yourself. I like riding and camping with friends, but I also love going off on my own. Actually I only started doing it because once I was supposed to be going on a cycling holiday with an old schoolfriend who'd done loads of trips with me, but then she had children and her toddler got ill just before we were going away and she couldnt come, and I thought oh. Then I thought oh well, I'll go on my own and I thought I would not like it and Id feel lonely, and that people would think I was odd - used to care about that but dont now haha - and sometimes on the way I did feel lonely and people prob did think I was odd haha but actually although I missed some things a lot - eg laughing with my friend, I did really miss all the laughing - but I found when I was alone that there other things to enjoy. Different. I think cycling and camping alone is a very different experience. Both good. Definitely worth trying if you have never done it.. anyway, thanks for watching!

I’m going out in 3 weeks for the summer from London, though not on a Brompton. Combo this year; bikepacking with hiking, on an e-assist bike, expecting more trail than tarmac. Needs a catchy concept name :)
I love your solution for the front bag. You’re obv. aware of the need for weight distribution so I understand how chuffed you are. Kudos to hubby! It’s great how awareness has made everyone innovative.
This year, I’m replacing an Ortlieb with an Osprey 33 rucksack (in a waterproof sack, which keeps straps tidy on the rack and dry). Tucks right under the saddle and extends back on a pannier rack. Bought fab Rok straps to help.
I don’t think you have a head net, I think I will this time - for Scottish midges.
It’s very impressive how you plan, dialogue and edit your videos. Love all the angles and the personal bits. Well done and happy travels.

It feels like welcoming back dear, old friends when I take my camping gear out and set it up. Even if I'm on a multi-day trip and it was just that morning that I'd packed them away! I just got back from hiking the West Highland Way and I swear the thing I enjoyed most was the wild camping. I stayed in 7 epic "hotel rooms" with my tent and then one actual smelly hostel in Ft William LOL
Hi Robin, I feel exactly the same, such a nice feeling as I ride along, to know I have that tent and all I need with me, shelter, food... and then getting somewhere and shaking my tent out of its bag and getting set up is so nice. I just did week-long ride all camping except for one night a guesthouse and OK it was nice to have a hot proper shower there (and charge my devices and battery pack which was the main point) but I was sooo glad the next night to get back to my familiar comfy cosy tent ...

Be careful of them ticks, you can get Lyme disease. I put smidge on my legs, which helps.

Fascinating, Susanna. I agree with your comments about personal hygiene. When I was backpacking, I always carried a small, lightweight folding bowl and will, again, if I get away on the trail this year,. A cupful of warm water is sufficient to get a good, all-over wash and freshen one up after a day on the trail. I also carried a flask - it was great to have a hot drink without having to get out the stove during a break.

This video is great, full of direction, peace and beauty! It is an extraordinary and very complete guide for those who want to start this type of trip. The amount of stuff you carry on the bike is really impressive. You take advantage of everything, including comfort when traveling. This video has given me a lot of direction, thank you very much. I have a question: ¿When you make these trips, do you create a menu and bring what you are going to eat or do you buy along the way? Does Trangia make that titanium stove in your country? I have tried to look for it but the impression I have is that they don't make them. I like how light and easy to clean titanium is. I know it's more expensive but it's worth it. Believe it or not, I have not bought one of those equipment because I have two tiny Vargo in titanium and to tell the truth I love it, the only problem is that you only have 16 minutes of fire and you have to reload if what you are going to cook takes longer than that. time. I tell you that to prevent the pot from turning black with smoke while you cook, you must use 100% alcohol. If you buy it at 70, 80 or 90, you will always have the black pots. That remaining 10, 20 and 30% is sterilized water, which is why when it burns it makes black smoke😉. Greetings from the tropics and good health!!!
Hello Carmen! thanks for the message! glad you liked the film! yes I plan my meals in advance, and take most food that I will need with me, all of it if possible, eg if the trip is only a few days. I measure out excatly the amounts I need of everything so I dont take too much (or too little). It's because when I am cycling I want to spend the time enjoying my route and things, and dont want the hassle of having to look for shops that are open etc, and take time to make detours for that, go into towns etc. Plus when I go in shops, esp big supermarkets where I have to trot around the aisles looking for things and it takes time, I really hate leaving my bike on its own outside... What I love is when I come across those farmers stalls at the roadside that you get sometimes, cos then I can just pull in, choose some nice fresh local veg, have a little chat, buy exact small amounts of what I want, eg one cabbage! and then carry on, and it is exciting to have something different to cook...
@@susannathornton Thanks for answering, I experience exactly the same thing, leaving the bike alone is not to my liking too. You're right, mega supermarkets are not like before. Now everything is sold in large quantities and that is fine for families. I remember when in Puerto Rico you would go for a walk and the farmers would sit on the side of the road to sell their fruits and vegetables, that was really wonderful there you would find all the seasonal fruits❤️I remember it with excitement!! Susanna I hope one day you can visit the Caribbean, it is a beautiful place full of colors. At the same time, I tell you that your country is beautiful and its people seem to be very calm. The meadows where you walk are spectacular and very suitable for bicycle rides. If one day you and your husband decide to visit the island, remember that the invitation still stands.

I am a bit of a wild camping nut and Hilleberg fan (I have an Unna) and have been a subscriber to your channel for a couple of years. The last year, for various reasons, I have not been camping much, however. Also (and independent from my wild camping interests), I am a cycling nut (generally, but esp. mountain biking), and recently bought my first Brompton (which I absolutely love). A couple of my wild camping friends are going bikepacking in Anglesey in June and I'm now considering whether to join them on my Brompton (they will be on road/mountain bikes). Watching your videos is an inspiration - not just to see the logistics involved, but also to see your adventurous spirit and interesting personality. For me, a significant part of the adventure when I go on a wild camping trip or a (non-camping) bike tour is in the planning itself. Solving puzzles. Folding and packing things cleverly into compact spaces. Being inconspicuous and full of hidden surprises (i.e. the rucksack I'm carrying or the bag that's got a secret bike in it). I like that I can go on fairly niche, eccentric adventures, away from what most people tend to do. My inaugural Brompton adventure was to take it with me to a conference in Vienna, as my regular checked baggage, then to commute to the conference venue and do some leisure cycling while over there.
I'm just wondering whether I would be able to keep up with my friends on their tour of Anglesey. I have a two-speed C-line, which I've converted to a four-speed by putting a double-ring chainset on. I don't have a front derailleur, but can use my heel to change onto the small ring for steep hills. However, changing back to the big ring requires me to get off the bike and use my hands, so it could slow us down a bit.
It's clear that I am talking myself into trying it though. Having watched your video, I feel inspired to join the dots between my two hobbies. Also, now that you've shown us all the helpful cycling gadgets that your husband has made, I can cite these and ask my wife to make me some too. She's expert with a sewing machine and has been making her own clothes for years, so I might ask for some fancy pants as a starter 😁.

Hi Colin! omg yeh I have been out on cycling adventures with friends and on my own since I was about 14, as soon as I was kind of allowed, or a bit before haha. So yes I have changed things! First overseas trip was with a schoolfriend to Ireland and we rode the exact road that Miriam was on funnily enough, over Gap of Dunloe... was so lovely to see it in her film actually. We were 16 or something, super excited, froze to death and didnt sleep at all on the night ferry from Liverpool, had basically just our normal bikes we used for getting around town as everyone did, steel bikes with shaky rear racks, and we had some kind of basic two man tent and the sort of sleeping bags that you are supposed to use in caravans... And my stove! the same one haha

Allow me two questions: For the Trangia, why don’t you use the gasflask that they have now, they are so easy to use? - And then - Why the Brompton? I am intrigued by the brand but never tried one but I can sense and see now how many people love them. And I do love the design … BUT I am so curious to know what the upsides are? because it seems that other bike types like a mountainbike would be much more suited for your travels on gravel roads etc.? Thanks again from a new subscriber, you make me want to go on a bike trip again!

I dont care too much really about all that and make the films just cos I like doing it, but of course it is nice if the numbrs go up too! About having a down jacket in the top of my bag to pull on when resting, I got the idea from climbers' "belay jackets"... Oh about the Brompton great you read through other answers - yep it is a compromise, and you are right that on loose deep gravel, or cobbles etc, the small wheels are not ideal, and I have to slow down and take more care... A mountain bike or gravel bike etc would be better on those surfaces. But if I had a mountain bike I would not be able to bring it with me easily on a train etc and go wherever I want to go...

I recently bought Tannus airless tyres for my Brompton as I'm going on a bit of a tour this summer. I quite like them, they are like riding normal tyres without worrying about a puncture. I retired to the Norfolk Broads and now I don't have to go far for little wild camping jaunts. I have one of those pack rafts which are super light and small and I can get my Brompton on it with all my gear. It allows me to find places where I'm not going to get disturbed. I'm on a rolling fast at the moment and your cooking has tempted me. I fast for 36 hours and then have a 12 hour window for eating normally. It has been really successful and I am currently extending it to a rolling 48 hour fast. Great video. All the best.

Thanks for this video, very informative. Hint for Trangia simmer ring: use the kettle holder as tweezers to grap the brown, extending part of simmer ring. Then you can place simmer ring slowly and don't need to throw it on burner.

aw thank you Sandra, yeh you are right, lovely places just on our doorstep, and it also really great to do a very short trip, this whole trip was less than 24 H, leaving the house in the afternoon one day, and back home again next day for lunch

aw thanks Ant, yeh it does take a bit of practising and so on. The first time I tried to camp by Brompton I had a huge struggle to pack and finally jammed a wooden spoon under the rack as a last resort fix to a bag that was rubbing and I still just couldnt get everything in and had to bundle the last things into a rucksack, and set off super late.
