You read my mind. This was the question I had after viewing this video. I was in the same situation sans the correct tools and I damn near made a pact with Satan to complete this job.
The electro-viscous fan clutch (yes, that's the name) basically just replaces the little bimetallic doodad that purely mechanical fan clutches have with a solenoid. Internally the clutches still work the same. Solenoid opens up, allowing the silicone fluid to enter in the "friction" area at a controlled rate. "what if we take the worst aspects of a mechanicL fan clutch, and the worst aspects of an electric fan and combine them together" - engineer, somewhere.
@@aserta I guess the complication might be amp draw. How many amps at 12v would it take an electric fan to match the output of that big mechanical one, especially under resistance, and for how long of a duty cycle with heat etc?
Trailblazers had a super annoying version of this kind of fan. Doing water pumps on them was tricky, mostly because removing the fan was fiddly and annoying.
Way back in the day I bought a used Chevy Chevette. After a month or two the starter quit. The mechanic got a rebuilt one and put it in, It worked for about a week. This process repeated 5 times. He told me only rebuilt starters were available. Since the rebuild shop was local he called them. The original owner had sold out about six months before and the new owner was doing what is typical, cutting costs everywhere he can, which included hiring unqualified help. Anyway, my mechanic talked the old owner into overseeing the starter rebuild and lo and behold that starter was still working fine when I sold the car a year later. Shows to go ya, there is no substitute for knowing what you're doing.

Hi Wes. There is a simple "magazine" test for fan clutch in my country. Take a magazine(not wife's favorite 😄) roll it and put it into fan when engine's run. If the fan stop or going slow, congratulations, you win a new fan clutch. We also call it viscous clutch, there is something like liquid silicone inside. Sometimes could be repeared with new silicone, but only sometimes, and is temporary. Sorry for mistakes, i didn't practice writing for years.
Wes, you have to put more outtakes in your videos. The battery sparking was hilarious and so was the sigh of a long day in the shop. But the wife proof comment was also hilarious.

I had a pick up with a 5 speed manual when I met my wife. “I can’t drive a stick shift , you can teach me later “ she told me.. 25 years later I’m still waiting for the first lesson! Lol
I replaced the whole pulley / fan clutch system on my 5.9L pre-emptively at 225k miles. The replacement clutch quit working in a week. The original clutch is still going strong at 20 years old and 320k miles. Luckily the old 5.9s didnt need fan clutchs, it never got hot unless towing heavy, just no airplane noise.
13:23 Oh no! The truck is fixing itself! PANIC! Well, even though it's a diesel, it doesn't suffer from a no-spark issue! Way to help the customer keep their cool! I'm sure they appreciated that.
I’ve done 5 water pumps in the last 2 months. I used Carquest new water pumps on all 5. I’ve had 2 come back leaking. I’ll no longer use aftermarket water pumps if I don’t have to. Luckily enough, neither of them were driven from the timing belt.
I used to see this issue all the time with the Ford 6.0 and 6.4 oil burners. The OEM fan clutch would go at like 200k miles (or roughly after the 3rd set of injectors and 2nd turbo had been replaced). Someone would replace the fan clutch with aftermarket junk and it would either be bad right out of the box or fail within weeks. The only lasting repair on those was an OEM fan clutch. I think the OEM part was made by Visteon and we were able to buy from them (through Worldpac or something) vs Ford for a decent savings. Parts availability with Chrysler sucks because they’ve changed ownership like 47 times in the past 20 years and every time that happens, the new ownership changes parts suppliers and vehicle platforms. Once they do that, they don’t want to acknowledge that the old vehicles and old parts manufacturing contracts exist anymore, so no more parts availability. They’ve had that same issue for a long time now and it’s unlikely to get any better. Funny that it has new AC parts and a failed fan clutch. I saw that a lot too. People would unload the parts cannon on the AC system without checking to see why those components failed. The truck would have a bad fan clutch, running the AC pressure up to 500 psi and blowing up the compressor and/or destroying the clutch. Parts cannon specialist would replace the AC system and ship it without ever checking to see if the AC system was overheating.
Hey Wes, I worked at "a place" in Morrison that made the electronics for those fan clutches... Our customer was so hard up that they sent us pallets of defective parts so we could destructively disassemble and salvage one sensor to make more... So yeah, the supply chain is rough!
If you want to spoil the misses, get a cheap table umbrella and bolt it to the plate the hitch attaches to, I did this on my mower and it definitely made mowing in the hot summer sun suck way less.
The difference between them & you Wes, you have the correct diagnostics to check the operation of new parts. You don’t just fire the canon & call it fixed.
"Yeah, we're getting the old girl fixed up".....and you're getting new parts for the mower as well? Always love the content! Safety squints for the grass in the eyes.....
Nice fix Wes. Exactly right, new doesn't mean good. I just had my transmission rebuilt 3x due to bad parts that were new. 6 hours just to get the tranny out and over 4 just to put it back in. All done 3x.
Even years ago I fixed a lot of a/c problems with a new fan clutch that did not show up until a/c was used. Now you get the ones like this but also cars with 2 electric cooling fans that one doesn't work but no overheat, but shows up in poor a/c and higher pressures on both low and high sides. Also had one with a near perfectly shaped pyramid of grass, insulation, and twigs with a rat condo on top between the condenser and radiator. Showed up at the start of a/c season, yet this thing blocked 1/3 of the cooling area, extending almost to the top of the radiator from both sides of the bottom.
It was nice having the mower noise in the background. It felt like I was watching an Eric O video. ;-) Thanks for taking us along through your process Wes. It's greatly appreciated.
nice job chasing down the problem.the last time i had a "new" part fail it was a fuel pump.why is it that fuel pumps never fail until AFTER you just filled the tank.hope you enjoyed your time off.good to see your back.
In a pinch I had to buy a store brand fuel pump for my Blazer to get it going in like 2014, it lasted maybe a year. Next pump was a Delphi unit from Amazon, it's still in the truck running today.

You also don't load up the parts cannon to fix the problem. That's the sign of a good mechanic. My stepson bought an Ebay starter ,chinesium type. It is a 3 hour job to replace. The starter worked once. That was a very expensive cheap starter.

Great job Wes, after 10 years, manufacturers don't have to support their products, though I hear after 3 years or so, some claim its old technology 😉. I still hate all this computer crap on all the vehicles. I prefer old vehicles ie pre computer stuff. Great diagnosis and repair. You are the vehicle repair wizard for sure.
Working for the parts division of a big vehicle manufacturer, there was a commonly held suspicion that we often got lumbered with reject parts from original suppliers to the vehicle factory that didn't quite pass their quality tests..... There is a difference between aftermarket parts that are pure fakes, parts that are the same as OE, parts that copy OE but are made cheaply/simply to be competitive and parts that have actually been improved from the original design by aftermarket suppliers to cure known problems.
Thanks Wes, worth the wait, and glad you took some time off with the family. I watch all of the Ford make you loko vids, because I have fords and he’s walked me through a few shade tree fixes. Hope you have a great 4th weekend, stay safe, and best regards.

Thank you for the holiday video. I have 20 kids here and I’m hiding in my basement watching. Here’s the deal: UA-camrs lie Wes. Anyone claiming they only use only OEM parts in the last 18 months must be from Chicago.
Never had a vicious coupling go wrong on one of mine, mechanical mates warn about it but not so far. Plenty of grief from electrical fans though ! Being from the UK my wife learnt on a manual gearbox, preferred them, learnt from rally driving mates, got better than most guys.
I put a Uro fan clutch on my Z3 when I got it because it was new, and why not, I was in there anyway. Lo and behold, it revved to the moon and made me worry about sending a blade through my hood. Put the old one back on. Some years later I took the fan off entirely, it's redundant with the electric one anyway. Multiple years of Alabama summers and I have never needed it.
I had just the opposite problem with my Volvo 140 excavator. The fan ran all the time. I had to change the clutch. The temp would not run hot enough and the emissions when crazy asking for numerous Re Gen’s all day.
Just did one on my 07 Express lasted like a month at least I was warmed up when I switched to a hopefully HD one definitely feeling the struggle 👍happy 4th
when a mechanic says he only uses OEM parts that tells me something about the mechanic, not even in san francisco a mechanic will only works with OEM or good bye business. you are right with new parts been bad sometimes, I replaced a new brake cylinder twice, the rubber seals inside were melting when the brakes were applied each time. brake pedal would go to the floor.
We have those people around here too, buy a diesel and do absolutely nothing with them but drive them back and forth to work, and that’s why it costs just the same if not more to license a truck then a car around here. Thanks city slickers sure appreciate it.
I just went through the same thing with bad new parts. Replaced a compressor and then it would not take freon when I tried to charge it. Clutch was engaged but it would not pump. Replaced the txv and condenser and blew the lines. No restrictions. Finally ordered a second compressor and it worked like it should have the first time.
And some times it isn't, the fun bit is figuring out when you do need to go genuine. With my disco it's stupid stuff like the over priced engine mounts where the aftermarket ones are crap.
I have to weld patches on this one every year. The sandy soil just wears through it. The whole top is paper thin. If we get two more years out of it I'll be amazed.
You are a life saver! I’m chasing after the same issue.. brand new ac system with ac cycle switch and brand new cooling system. Yet, fan is not in the 0000 range for rpm speed. I’m interested in doing a mechanical swap
Got an 09 4500 that I've had to replace fans over and over. I wound up doing a manual fan clutch. It fixed the cooling problems on motor & trans but not enough air pull to keep condenser cool for a/c while idle.
Lots of questions about the air hammer tool. It's this one from Lisle: amzn.to/3bSd7SI

I still hate all this computer crap on all the vehicles. I prefer old vehicles ie pre computer stuff. Great diagnosis and repair. You are the vehicle repair wizard for sure.
Hope you all had a great vacation! You're the best mechanic this side of the Mississippi. Sending love from the Hawkeye state.
Glad to see Pup isnt' limping anymore. The sparking ending was the best.
Excellent video! Show’s exactly what people have been saying for years: “Dealer Quality” doesn’t mean it’s going to be any better than OEM.
Thank you for this, you are a pleasure to watch. To few like you anymore, sadly.
so im not the only one that checks the battery amperage with a ratchet? another great video! I've been having issue with my own 3500 cummins 6.7 fan clutch so this video was fortuitous ! Happy fourth !
Commenting for the algorithm.
Well done, young man!
Thank you for the holiday video. I have 20 kids here and I’m hiding in my basement watching. Here’s the deal: UA-camrs lie Wes. Anyone claiming they only use only OEM parts in the last 18 months must be from Chicago.
holy crap... 700 bucks for a fan clutch... somebody is getting payed way too much ... makes ya wonder how people sleep at nite .. lol great vid!!
The enthusiastic look on the boss lady's face when you said we'll have a new mower soon. 😄😄
Never had a vicious coupling go wrong on one of mine, mechanical mates warn about it but not so far. Plenty of grief from electrical fans though !
Being from the UK my wife learnt on a manual gearbox, preferred them, learnt from rally driving mates, got better than most guys.
Least if a viscous mech goes wrong a couple of self tappers can get you home.
They may have gotten a bad part, but they sold it as fixed……that’s not good. At least you went the extra mile and troubleshot correctly and fixed.👍
I had just the opposite problem with my Volvo 140 excavator. The fan ran all the time. I had to change the clutch.
The temp would not run hot enough and the emissions when crazy asking for numerous Re Gen’s all day.
Wifey’s enthusiasm for her Cub Cadet was palpable. Hahahaha. Good stuff Wes.
Just did one on my 07 Express lasted like a month at least I was warmed up when I switched to a hopefully HD one definitely feeling the struggle 👍happy 4th
Good video. Thank you. Love your wife's pony tail.
Wife seems thrilled about mowing.
Thumbs up for FordTechMechloco, always learning and for our sporadic parts availability networks.
when a mechanic says he only uses OEM parts that tells me something about the mechanic, not even in san francisco a mechanic will only works with OEM or good bye business. you are right with new parts been bad sometimes, I replaced a new brake cylinder twice, the rubber seals inside were melting when the brakes were applied each time. brake pedal would go to the floor.
Great info, experience is the key, awesome repair.
SPARKLING OUTRO ✨️
Love those cummins Ram trucks. Wish they've brought it to the middle east i wouldve grabbed one in a heartbeat. Especilly a clean first gen 12v p-pump
Viscousness < Viscosity
Your little meeting with sparky came to mind prior to showing the blooper.
Aftermarket doesn't mean bad. Sometimes it surpassed OEM in quality
Yeah, but with how cheap a lot of car manufacturers are getting today... that's not all that surprising🤷♂️
And some times it isn't, the fun bit is figuring out when you do need to go genuine. With my disco it's stupid stuff like the over priced engine mounts where the aftermarket ones are crap.
I'm glad I'm not the only guy around that believes in blowing off the mower deck, I've fixed my deck three times but not from rusting.
I have to weld patches on this one every year. The sandy soil just wears through it. The whole top is paper thin. If we get two more years out of it I'll be amazed.
@@WatchWesWork You can't get around that my problem was exploratory mowing where should not have been.
You are a life saver! I’m chasing after the same issue.. brand new ac system with ac cycle switch and brand new cooling system. Yet, fan is not in the 0000 range for rpm speed. I’m interested in doing a mechanical swap
Good Repair Now Days New Mean Never Ever Works especially with Aftermarket as well As Oem Parts now days @Watch Wes Work
Got an 09 4500 that I've had to replace fans over and over. I wound up doing a manual fan clutch. It fixed the cooling problems on motor & trans but not enough air pull to keep condenser cool for a/c while idle.
Battery sparky sparky!! Happy fourth of July Wes!
