Kerry Wood 2003 NLCS Home Run

- Game 7 of the 2003 NLCS at Wrigley Field. With a runner on 3rd, 2 outs, and a 3-2 count, Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood belts a sure shot into the bleachers and handles it like a boss.
At this point, the cubs had not been to the World Series in 58 years, and had not won it in 95 years. To imagine the pressure that was on the cubs players that day (after the game 6 collapse), and the pressure on Wood himself to pitch well during this appearance, much less this at-bat... is unbearable. We may have lost the war, but those battles will live on forever. He handled this at-bat like a boss, and like a true National League pitcher who takes pride in swinging the bat. I will remember this at-bat forever.
You should too.
This may be the loudest any stadium in history has ever been. Crazy. Just pure, raw jubilant emotion. You could have told those people they all just won a million dollars and the reaction would be about the same.
And how beautiful is it that the announcers stfu and let the audience reaction marinate. To often nowadays announcers talk over "moments" like it needs narration.
Jeff Kent’s Walk-Off HR in the 2004 NLCS was louder imo
@@ibhaenggi Wrigley doesn't have artificial noise, or sound amplifying panels or whatever newer stadiums use, like the white sox do. Just saying.
@@DL-fc2xtwe didn’t need my amplifying sounds to go undefeated at home in the World Series you goofy mf clown.
@@ibhaenggiThat was awesome, but I don't think it was even close to this.
I love the way he celebrated with his team. Just high fives. No screaming and running around like an idiot.
It was just the second inning, that's why.
jbisthemaster1 still. if he was in the NBA he would think he was the most amazing person in the world
+DFG Music False analogy.
jbisthemaster1 not really. Everyone is sooo full of themselves in that league
I hope wrigley rocks like this next week. I don't think the 2015 nlds had any moments that got nearly as loud as this.
I think the closest was Baez's 2-run HR. Not saying it was like this but at Wrigley it was loud.
henry manahan think it rocked louder in 2016 :)
Something I noticed watching the 2016 playoffs on national tv.. they turn the crowds volume down!!!! what a shame!!
Allegedly the LOUDEST Wrigley ever got...ever...per decibel levels......all we can say is "Thanks Kerry...for pitching your arm off..literally, for us...we LOVE you back bro!!"
agreed brother. AGREED
mep41376 did his arm actually fall off
WOLFGABE No dumbass
@@theman6705 ok
My dad went to a World Series game and still to this day says this was the loudest Wrigley has ever gotten. He was in the top deck and was genuinely concerned bc of how much the stadium was shaking. If I could travel back to any moment in time I’m sports, this is for sure top 5.
Buddy of mine was at the game and he said the exact same thing, about the stadium shaking
I was across the street inside Bernies with a full Newcastle in my hand. By the time that ball landed I had no idea where my beer went and it was absolute pandemonium you could hear how LOUD it was outside the stadium.
A lot of that jubilation was due to everyone holding in their fear from the night prior when we collapsed. I also loved that Kerry handled it like a boss and just rounded the bases and sat down while everyone else was going apeshit. Kerry knew we still had a lot of work to do. Unfortunately that Marlin team was damn good too. What a run though.
One of the best moments in Cubs history.
and it will only get better
You said it
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
it really sucks how much Wood and Prior could've accomplished but always got injuries
The crowd... plus the organ in the background. Majestic
+Noah Penrod exactly. Wrigley is where its at, nothing like it.
The loudest Wrigley Field has ever been!
filipinobean not anymore!
Even with the WS it still never got as loud as this...
Iowa Hawkeyes You’re right. Insane volume. The place shook at its core. I was there. Single most thrilling sports moment of my life. And I was at game 7 in Cleveland ;)
Montero grand slam in the '16 nlcs might be right up there too
I saw this game live and even though the outcome was heartbreaking, this moment to this day still gives me chills.
Can you believe in 3 years that'll be 20 years ago...
Time flies way too quick.

The single loudest, craziest moment in Wrigley Field history. I was there. I know we lost the game, but that moment was the loudest, craziest reaction I’ve ever experienced at any stadium, for any sport, ever. After what happened in game 6, and how this game started, people just went out of their minds! People were hugging strangers, grown men were crying, absolute bedlam, pure baseball joy! #1 loudest, craziest moment in Wrigley history. Hands down. Nothing else even close.
sidewinder3000 great to hear. I was at Bernies across the street I lost a full bottle of beer during that celebration. Had no idea where it went, didn't care. Huge HR. Kerry is class. Major cub memory for sure.
Daryl Paul Lockwood Bernie’s! Love it. KW epitomizes “Cub” to me. Tragically short career, be he played with the kind of grit and guts few guys do anymore. An all-time fave for me.
sidewinder3000 absolutely he was. Met him twice (completely outside of baseball) and I can confirm he is a cool cat. I think he showed that in how he handled that run around the bases during the meyhem. He knew there was work to do still. Obviously I love the current crew who got it done, but kerry is my all time favorite from my era (I'm 41).
After the events of game 6, this was literally the only kind of moment that could have swung the entire momentum back the other direction. For a good 3 more innings after this it definitely felt like the Cubs were going to find a way to win it all.
I'm still not used to the fact that the Cubs just broke the curse. I'm catching myself feeling pangs of sadness and then realizing: shit, we actually won it all last week.
Tronathon242 SAME! lol
This, at one point, was my favorite moment in Cubs history. Not anymore.
A G R E E D
what?! what's better than that?! ;)
them winning the world series?
Favorite moment came from a game where they lost a winner-take-all game to go to the World Series? After blowing a 3-1 series lead no less? Ok.
INSANITY AT WRIGLEY..
That team could have done it, man. They were good enough to beat the Yankees in the WS.
Completely choked.
Kerry Wood had so much swag without trying all the way down to not coming out for the curtain call. I'm from Austin but I will never forget this era of the cubs
He knew there was work to do still. I've met him twice and will also never forget this. He was a stud.
@@lazymoon13lol I met him at an Autograph session and told him how great he looks that he looks like he should rejoin the Cubs. He started laughing. I hope he didn’t think I was hitting on him but I must say he’s a good looking guy. So is his wife. 😂
One of the Best moments in CUBDOM history, i REALLY thought this team was going to the WORLD SERIES but......
That is even louder than when the Cubs won their first Pennant in 2016 GAme 6!
hard to believe how long ago this was miss them players
IN THE AIR LEFT CENTER FIELD KERRY WOOD PLAYS LONG BALL!!!!!!!!! Gosh I love being a cub fan!
You enjoy crying, pain, and suffering?
+Thomas Storff It's called devotion kid... When the Cubs finally do win it will be sweeter then all 11 of the other Chicago titles I have seen in my life put together.
+XxChicagoCityOfChampions23Xx The Cardinals are your master. never forget that.
STL is nobody's master... Just an irrelevant small market city in the middle of nowhere, Chicago has like 8 more titles as a sports city compared to STL in the last 30 years LMFAO. And your female fans are fucking hideous, shouldn't surprise me though, it's STL! The place is a fucking shithole hahahahahahahhaha!
+XxChicagoCityOfChampions23Xx and they aren't sitting too pretty now are they? BRING THE BROOM OUT TODAY!
first time I heard wrigley field this loud... total Pandemonium!!
DURING THIS 2003 PLAYOFF SEASON, I WAS A 20-YEAR-OLD YOUNG MAN ROOTING FOR THIS UNBELIEVABLE CHICAGO BASEBALL TEAM TO EVER REACH THE WORLD SERIES FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY. THEY CAME UP SHORT, BUT IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE 💪💪💪💪💪🥹🥹🥹🥹
Broke my big toe celebrating this smack!
If all your batters are suffering through one pitcher, have YOUR pitcher do it for you.
Remember it like it was yesterday
Was there that night, yeah I was crying right then...and well later they were different tears.
I miss Thom Brenneman. BRING HIM BACK FOX!!
You figured their ticket to the Series was stamped after this moment. But…
One of the coolest sports moments I’ve ever seen live
What a moment for wood. Too bad his outing wasn’t the best. Those marlins man.
@@germansantos5733 yep. It was just the Marlins time
@@germansantos5733 yes sir! Got to love the rich history of baseball. Love it.
I am a Cardinals fan, but seeing a pitcher hit a home run is great! Hate the DH
Cannot stand it. I grew up on the south side of Chicago and was a Cub fan from the start for that very reason. Hate the DH.
Kerry took it full count and still blasted it. This full at bat is worth a watch.
To me, this was more Epic than his 20 Strikeout Game.
absolutely
Joe Morgan always said that the Cubs had a much greater home field advantage in the postseason when the Cubs played at night--as he thought Wrigley Field's atmosphere was a lot more intimidating to the opposing club. Can't think of a more perfect example than this--WOW!! Listen to that crowd--INSANE!!
Highlight of my life. :\
God I love baseball
Whatta call “Kerry Wood plays Longball”
Not from Chi-Town but My God did I want Chicago to win that series. Hats off to the Marlins though- what a well balanced team they had that year.
There was no sweeter sound than the crack of the bat when Woody would hit one out of the park. Good times. If only this series wasn't such a heart breaker.
Harry Caray would have lost his ever loving mind.
Good to see a glimpse of Sammy “Say it ain’t” Sosa.
This is such a great home run, it's a shame that Chicago lost in the end to the Marlins
Best part is how he pimped out the HR like he was a 9 year old boss in little league.
The description seems to ignore the fact that Kerry Wood gave up 7 goddamn runs in 5 and 2/3 innings...
Because the world obviously knows that and after 10 years there are other things to remember. It is what it is. I'd take woody any day on my squad.
Even back then there were bright moments as a cub fan
One of the Best moments in Cubdom History
We're gonna win one in the next 5 years.
Cubs fans are the best in ANY sport.
if my Mets don't make it we be pulling for the cubbies 1945 long time for a WS you guys were so close in 2003 and 1984
Loudest stadium ever
Cubs fans understood the assignment.
Actually a healthy looking swing
This is, by far, the most bittersweet moment of my life.
Electric atmosphere
The better team won in the end
Longest HR trot in history, 27 seconds. Hilarious. He savored the moment.
I love how the announcers don’t speak. They just let everyone soak in the moment.
Tying run wasn't on 3rd. Kerry was the tying run.
good catch. I'll fix it later
+Daryl Paul Lockwood there was a runner on third
+keith durden +Habs was referring to Kerry, he was the tying run. My title of the video had said "with the tying run on third". I fixed that since. all good.
0:22 did he miss first base?
Looks like his heel barely touched the edge of it
Lost the battle, won the war. Go Marlins!
Prime example of what makes baseball great. Keep the DH out of the NL!!!!
thank you my friend. this is the exact reason I love this HR by woody. NL all the way baby.
What could've been......hopefully this year is the ultimate redemption.
Jonathan Rivera spoiler alert: it was!
and then it was all downhill after that
DMaster81 Was it really?
