  • Worcester Cathedral Voluntary Choir's publicity video produced by JDA Media.
For over 140 years Worcester Cathedral Voluntary Choir has been training boys and gentlemen in the art of choral singing. Worcester is unique among English Cathedrals in having the last voluntary choir made up of men and boys.
The boys range in age from 6 to 14 and come from a wide variety of schools and backgrounds. The gentlemen similarly travel from all corners of Worcestershire and beyond, and range from teenagers to long-serving and experienced singers.
The boys rehearse on Tuesday and Fridays evenings, and the gentlemen join them on Fridays. The choir normally sings an evening service on Sundays, but also participates in special services and concerts.
Over the years the Voluntary Choir has enjoyed many tours abroad, including trips to Paris and Belgium.

I used to be a church chorister many years ago. Being a chorister offers you a unique, celestial experience, full of blessings. It is splendid, noble, eternal, glorious. You delight so many hearts with angelic, heavenly music, fulfilling their spiritual needs. You are blessed in many aspects of your life. You have many friends and you will simply receive special blessings now and in eternity. You honour the Lord and the Lord honours you. A nice book of remembrance is written in heaven. It is such a wonderful joy now, here on earth and afterwards, in heaven. Being a chorister is one of the most precious experiences - sacred, timeless and joyous - in this life. Parents and children are tremendously blessed as a community and in their families, from generation to generation. And they will be forever happy with the Lord!

I'm in the Cathedral Choir in Worcester now. Lovely experience. I wouldnt be able to be an excellent singer if i didn't join this choir. Love this.

It would have been really good to be allowed to hear a bit more of their singing!!

If Worcester really cared about its musical tradition, it wouldn't have thrown away its fabulous old organ in such shameful circumstances... the new Tickell cannot be called anything but inadequate, underpowered and dull by comparison... the furious arguments on the Mander forum at the time still stand as testament to the controversy! The then DofM had already tried (and thankfully failed) to scrap the old organ at Malvern Priory before moving on, and no sooner had the Worcester Tickell been completed than he was off to pastures new again...

So this last vestige of the Anglican men's and boys' choral tradition, beloved around the world, is now destroyed as of 2021. Why would any boy or young man want to sing for people who hate him and the special gifts and musical glories of which he's capable?
