Met John and Lisa in Charlotte. They are extremely wonderful people and John is very blessed to have Lisa. She is even more beautiful in person and John is so down to earth and enjoys talking to anyone about the hobby. My kids and I love you guys! Keep the videos coming guys!!
Really like how you summed it up with "...fish that can HELP keep your aquarium clean." The fishkeeper definitely still needs to be involved. Good video!
Me encanta la manera de expresarte en cada uno de tus videos, tambien mencionar que los Otocinclus son buenos peces de ventosa que no crecen mucho ademas los come algas chino aunque este último si alcanza un tamaño un poco grande saludos!
Lisa snails arrived last night, and everyone seems to be happy in the new tanks! Food seems high quality, and t shirt looks amazing! Highly recommended 👌
I personally love Otocinclus. They are cute and derpy and do a really good job. I supplement their diet with Repashy gel food and I’ve had my otos for at least 4 years now.
You were talking about geophagus but my electric blue acaras also do the same. My angelfish alway go around the plant bases or just below the sponge filter and eat if there's anything there with their pointed mouth . I've never faced algae issues in any of my tanks . Some people says black mollies eat algea but they only eat if they're kept starved , with food available they don't do much with algae . BTW good list with lots of information for future reference.
Plus people who say they are aggressive might have got a flying fox instead I know they get mixed up at pet stores sometimes and labeled sae but they are actually flying foxes. Like my SAE I have now Gets a little aggressive during feeding time but it’s not bad enough where I need to be concerned.
Absolutely love my geophagus redhead tapajos, got a group of 5 with some other South American cichlids they definitely help clean the sand along with my wave makers and canister filter
Great video, as always, John and Lisa! And yes, Lisa, you do look so young and beautiful. Lucky John!!! Thanks guys for all you do for us fish keepers!
I'm one of those people glad for the return of these Top-10s. And yes, we want the list of fish Lisa find adorable 'cause they are... ugly. That said, I have a Bristlenose and it's an excellent helping hand. But agree, you have to consider yourself as main "tank cleaner" of your aquarium.
Another great video. I do enjoy a good "List" video for sure. Those Geo's are interesting and cool a fish for sure. Yes, Lisa, a video of your favorite ugly fish would be fun to see!
I just had to remove my siamese algae eater from my main aquarium. It was constantly chasing my rainbow fish around. Hoping a few weeks in a 10 gallon with a catfish will calm him down and ill be able to put him back.
People often confuse Siamese algae eaters with Chinese algae eaters. Chinese algae eaters are the ones that are a total nuisance. Siamese algae eaters are peaceful and won’t mess with your other fish… BUT yes they do tend to fight each other quite a bit
I actually try my hardest to grow diatomic algea on rocks and other things to help keep my bristlenose and otocinclus well fed with a balanced diet. Algea wafers and rapashy is great but I feel these guys benefit from the real deal.
Yay a Lisa video. I love my “clean up” crew. The only ones I got for that purpose were my otocinclus which I love. My Corydoras and upside down cats are because I love them. My upside down are full grown John is only 3 inches but Lisa is about 4 she is like a dragon compared to the Pygmy Corydoras. And finally love my mystery snails I have 2 with my veil tail betta in my 10 gallon.
Look! About the SAE fish... I had one and it was harassing the Celestial Pearl Danios non stop. I had to give it away because the CPDs were not eating anymore. He was even harassing a grey shark twice his size. And it was fed with shrimp and algae wafers.
So if I am being honest. My SAEs definitely fought each other when I first put them in my tank. That has finally stopped and while doing that they are all the black hair Alage in my tank and it hasn’t came back. I love ‘em though and they crack me up they got my Ottos to feel more comfortable and come out so much now(before I thought they all die and I couldn’t find them). Heck one of them even likes to hang out with my Cories lol. Note they never I mean never bother anyone but each other and voice hierarchy was determined they stop.
Hey, I have questions concerning a clean tank. What do you think of the Fluval aqua pro vac? Or anything similar? Any recommendations..especially when it comes to sand substrate?
I have six siamese algae eaters in a 75-gallon community tank. The only fish I've ever seen them harass is each other. My favorite part of their behavior is that they like to perch on the hardscape, often in groups. I've had many instances of seeing four of them chilling on the same rock. 😅
Studies have shown that if u add goldfish to your tank, it encourages you to clean your tank more as they are messy. So therefore, if you want a clean tank, get goldfish
Great videos. Do you guys keep any crayfish or fresh water crabs? I have some red claws and one vanilla lobster and one Electric Blue Lobsters and I adore them, especially the Vanilla. If you have any videos of those please post, I'm always looking for ways to keep them well fed and happy.
I'm 64 and I believe if you don't use it your loose it I'm a hyper old women I make myself get up off that butt cause I believe if I don't these dogs, fish well die and I would without them my kids and grandchildren are all grown up now so they help me so I'll help them till I'm 6ft under😮❤❤❤❤
@KGTropicals. This may be my anxiety talking again but if you keep fish with shrimp and a few shrimplets get picked off how much harder is it to determine how much to feed your fish? I'm just curious I've seen Mark from MD fish tanks do some great shrimp tanks i'm sure I could manage.
I think the confusion over the Siamese algae eater (Crossocheilus oblongus) stems from its resemblance to the distantly related Chinese algae eater (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri). SAEs are smaller, calmer, and shoaling. In contrast, CAEs are bigger, semi-aggressive, and territorial.
I agree I love snails. I had a horrible problem with bad algae and put in a small handful of a mix of bladder snail and ramshorns and they cleared a thick patch of algae the size of a basketball over 3 days and are now laying eggs.
I have a deep sub planted sand tank and the snails were out of control. I had 3 small bishirs in there and after the rest of the fish disappeared (1st time bisher keeper) I noticed fewer and fewer snails. The bishirs love to roll baby snails around in their mouth, suck the meat out, and spit out the shells. Those monster fish are 7-8 inches now and the tank and snails are all theirs.
Hi! I figured I’d comment on the most recent one so you’d be more likely to see it, but I have a question. For background, I’ve kept a small 5 gallon tank before but it’s been a few years and I’m getting a 10 gallon this time. I know the basics of cleaning and water tests but found my old test kits (ph and ammonia droppers and then the 5 in 1 test strips). Since it’s been so long, my old test kits are now expired by about two years for most of them. I did get new ones but haven’t got EVERYTHING yet. I was wondering if the expired ones would still be accurate enough? I’ve only found one video and it was for liquid ammonia tests, but what about the strips? If you or anyone in the comments who knows could help, that would be awesome since I’m kind of on a budget and don’t want to buy new 40 dollar kits yet if I can wait. Thank you!
I think the debate over the Siamese Algae Eater comes from people confusing it with the Flying Fox fish, which IS a feisty little beggar. Whereas the Algae Eaters are very sociable and barely squabble at all. In fact, when I had five together in a tank they used to lie all over each other in a cute fishy pile. I have found, as well, that they aren't very happy unless they have at least ONE companion. When I've had them alone they hide all the time. In groups they can become so confident that they'll come to the surface to eat out of your fingers, and they come to the front of the tank and flap their fins in excitement when they see you. (Presumably because they think that there's food coming, and boy do they love their food!)

I never had problems with SAE, except: 1. They demolish Java moss: So no Java moss unless you have high tech, CO_2 _may_ save it. 2. If 1 SAE gets skittish, other learn it. I had few SAE in a smaller tank, carefully I caught them, put into a larger tank and suddenly they became very skittish. Later I bought another group to have more SAE. I should have at least 7 SAE in that tank, but they barely come out when I'm near the tank. Like a collective trauma. It's not the lights, it's not the other fish or the shoal being too small. 3. SAE are hard to catch, they are fast and they can jump far. 4. They are related to Rainbow Shark Minnow and similar barbs, which are notorious in their relation with their "cousins", SAE included. They can be kept together, but they aren't exactly friendly. I wonder if the aggressiveness issue other mention comes from different species (there are some similar fish). SAE have narrow black strip which goes all the way in the fin (I think there's other barb with strip ending before the tail fin), but I wouldn't be surprised if some localities had less timid fish unless those imported to Europe. AFAIK nobody breeds them in Europe, because it's way cheaper to breed (catch?) them in Asia where the fish breed during the Monsoon season. It can be done with hormones, but a hobbyist may easily end with hundreds of baby SAE that way. Overall I love SAE (not on a plate as they think), they grow about 6" in length, live over 10 years if they are lucky, pretty easy to keep and they can help combat algae when they are young or hungry.
I have never seen SAE be aggressive to other fish. I have kept them with various fish for over 40+ years. The fish that look like SAE are Chinese algea eaters. They are meaner than stink. Before I learned how to tell them apart, I found them the hard way. Read up on the differences between SAE and CAE
I think Lisa is immortal :) I would like to see a list of ugly fish. Shrimp were snacks to all my fish. "Aren't they..." *chomp* *fish burp* Well that was an expensive snack.
My mystery snails keep eating my live plants, I feed them algae wafers (one per five snails) daily, plus whatever flake food falls whenever I feed my other fish in the tank. There isn’t much algae growth in my tank and I dose CO2 for the plants and have about 10 hours of daylight. Anyone have advice on getting my sweet snails to leave my plants alone 😭
Mystery snails usually don't eat healthy leaves. They tend to only eat dying leaves. I have dozens in multiple planted tanks and don't have an issue. If they are eating good leaves then there must not be enough food for them. If there's no algae to graze try a cut up cucumber or zucchini squash. Slice them up and blanch them in boiling water so they sink. Let them cool of course. I do that about once a week. They love it. You'll see a pile of snails all over them within 30 minutes. You can also try other sinking foods, rapashy gel, etc. Mine eat sinking pellets that I feed my Cory cats as well as the algae wafers. I'd step up the amount of algae wafers as well. 1 per 5 snails seems low. Double it at least.
John, if no one has said it already, you also don’t look a day over 25. Besides what is age other than a meaningless number indicating how much distance you’ve put between the cradle and the grave?
I have a problem and I need urgent help , one of my male mollies (around 5 months old) just disappeared! out of nowhere. I took everything out of the tank looked around the tank in the filter he is gone. I do have other 2 female mollies, 2 cory catfish(1albino) , 1 small pleco (albino), 2 danios, 3 neon tetras (we are gonna get more), 2 penguin tetras and 2 Chinese algae eaters. this morning he didn't come up for food and I looked and saw him in the boat hiding, later when I saw he still didn't come out I looked again and he was gone. Did one of the fish I have eat him? how can he just disappear like that. someone please help. thank you
@@johncameron4194 the fish may have eaten him, but how could they eat him so fast? And I didn't see any parts floating around. That's what so confusing
@@johncameron4194 yes I did check the floor and I did check the filter. It's just scary how they can just dissapeared like that. He must have been eaten
I'm so adverse to snails that I got rid of all my plants and got artificial plants instead after trying uncesscesfully for many years to get rid of them.
Lemme put it this way about siamese algae eaters that ive had, I had one who killed all his brothers so I put him in my cichlid tank (mbuna) and he holds his own in that tank and its algae free, lol.
