    Thank you very much for your effort. I bought a TO 2004 and learn to use it with your videos. Your explanations helped me a lot. I run a little workshop for motorcycles, old ones. I do not need big bandwith. The problems I have to solve mostly are single events of the motorcycle electic that cause a failure and occur sporadicly. For that I need a big deep memory. The enviroment in my workshop is both dirty and rough: oil, dirt and dirty hands, not like a workbench in a lab as you know for sure. For that enviroment the Micsig looks perfect and easy to clean. Have a nice Christmas and a happy new year!

      Good morning @lupo631. Thanks for the comment, and for watching. It’s funny that you mention that you use your Micsig to work on motorcycles. I have an 07 Honda Goldwing GL1800, and am supposed to be meeting up, as I type this for my weekly group ride; but unfortunately due to expected rain today, it was cancelled 😞. Thanks again for the comment, and Merry Christmas to you too.

      Hi Adam, what a quick answer! On the old motorcycles I replace the interrupter ignition system with an optronic ignition system from Newtronic/UK (formerly Piranha). The early ignition systems were soldered onto the circuit board by hand and there were often problems with that. It took me two months of searching to find a cold solder joint on an old Moto Guzzi Mille GT. First I had to find out what the problem was, until I finally unsoldered and checked all the electronic components. I only had a voltmeter from a multimeter available. That's why I hope to find these and similar problems more quickly with an oscilloscope. Problems with generators and alternator regulators should also be able to be found more quickly, at least I hope so. BTW your videos I found as customer videos on the website of Micsig as a reference! What a big compliment by Micsig to you! Greeting from Bremen/Germany! @@atomsworkshop195

      @@lupo631 Thanks for the info on the optronic ignition system from Newtronic. You never know when that may come in handy. Good work on finding the issue. I love that feeling of discovering the issue. It makes it all worth it. Most of the bikes I ride with nowadays are Goldwings, that are usually pretty reliable. With that said, they do have issues with their switches and buttons sticking (and there are a lot of them). In fact last week, my wife and I were about 2 hours away from home, and out in the middle of nowhere (in Texas 🇺🇸). We had to stop at a one lane bridge, to wait for on coming traffic; and my bike just died. Each time I pressed the start button, nothing. Of course I start stressing, quickly calculating the insane tow fee I’m about to get stuck with, since all my tools and diag equipment are at home. For whatever reason, I flipped the run switch on and off a few times, and it fired right up. After I got home I did a little research and found this was a common issue in the run switch in earlier models. Supposedly they sold a repair kit with just the inner parts of the switch. Of course I haven’t been able to find it. Only the entire assembly, which they seem to be really proud of, for what they sell it for, lol. I’ve ridden it a couple times since with no issue. I think I’m just gonna open it up and try and clean everything. Hopefully that’ll do. Oh yeah, and of course there is the 2-3 hour job of switching out the air filter.

      @lupo631 9 місяців тому

      Oh yes. I have had a similiar problem with my Moto Guzzi after I bought it from the pre-owner. I found out, that the emergency switch (kill-switch) was broken. The cable soldered at the kill-switch was hot and didn't look good. I repaired it, soldered the cable on the joint and thats it. The mechanical parts of the switch looked good, it was just only the cable what so it seems over the years lost contact because of the vibrations. @@atomsworkshop195

      Hello Ozzi xCar, thanks for stopping by. I do want to make diag and repair videos, but it very time consuming. I only have my phone to record and no one to hold it for me. I made a video of just swapping out some pads in Brembo calipers, that is super easy to do, but took forever to record (and it got very little views). I plan on making those videos when I get a GoPro to wear on my head, just can’t afford it right now. I just had a good candidate for a video. It was an 08 pathfinder with extended crank time and intermittent stahl. I think it would’ve been a good diag video. Not just for the diag, but because I broke one of the 6 or so heater lines that connect to the “spider”. I barely touched it with my elbow while back probing the bank 1 cam sensor. This was while it was running, so of course the 200 degree coolant shot out and filled into my glove and burnt the hell out of my hand. Apparently, those lines break super easy, and I would have loved to share that with everyone. I live and work in south Texas where it’s regularly around 100 degrees, so you usually just want to get the job done and move on. Eventually my friend. It’s definitely on my to do list.

      Just saw this question. Not sure exactly what your asking. Do you mean, does the waveform disappear from the screen once you lose signal? If so, i think it depends on your timescale. I usually set it to a rolling time base (I think that is engaged when you set to more than 200 ms (I would have to check for the exact number) (don’t have it in front of me at the moment. When you set it like this, it holds a lot more (more time) on the screen). I’ll be honest, I have not mastered the different triggers. Let me know if this made sense to you. If not, when I have my scope in front of me, I’ll be able to be more precise.

  • @tonyfremont
    @tonyfremont 4 роки тому +1

    Your low pass filtering might have taken out the coil oscillation. Also, try DC coupling the COP channel. AC coupling drives constant input voltage towards zero, over time. This makes the dwell period slope towards zero after it starts. It also makes the burn line slope down as the burn progresses.

      I hear you. I just think if you’re gonna thumbs down, you mention why; but you’re right, not everyone sees it that way. I absolutely understand about the scope. I told Micsig that if they put the automotive features into the STO, and reinforced the outside like the ATO, that they would have an awesome scope for automotive use, that people (I) would really like. Unfortunately, they said, for now, the ATO is their automotive scope, and don’t have any plans to change it at this time. Maybe if more people would email them mentioning this, they would reconsider. Hey Adam. First off all thanks for your videos .
    I've recieved my micsig to1000 series yesterday. Have two questions for now, if you don't mind?
    1. I can go with the primary probe from the coil right to the scope, right?
    2. Do I need an attenuator for the hantek ht25 auto ignition probe?
    Thanks in advance

    • @atomsworkshop195
      @atomsworkshop195  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Ed, congratulations on your new scope. That’s great. Question 1: the scope is rated up to 300 volts, so essentially, you should be ok. With that said, to be on the safe side (incase of voltage spikes or what not), you might want to use an attenuator. I bought some of the Hantek 20:1 attenuators and they seem to work fine. Also, you can use the 10:1 probes that came with the scope. Just don’t forget to choose the correct attenuation setting under the channel menu. For the record, I have connected straight to the primary side with 1:1 leads. However, that was done by accident. I usually use the 10:1 probes or 20:1 attenuators, just to be safe. Question 2: If the Hantek COP (ignition) probe is like the Micsig, No, you do not need an attenuator. The Micsig COP (ignition) probe has an internal 5,000:1 attenuator. So you just have to choose 5,000:1 under your channel menu. I would think the Hantek is probably 5,000:1 also, but I would look in the owners manual to know for sure what the internal attenuation is. I hope this helps. Again, that’s great, you got your scope. How are you liking it so far? Feel free to ask any other questions. I will try to answer them, as soon as I see them.

    • @atomsworkshop195
      @atomsworkshop195  3 роки тому +1

      I might be getting the 5,000:1 confused with the Pico COP (ignition) probe. Honestly, I can’t remember at the moment. I think they might both be 5,000:1. I’m pretty tired and about to head on to bed, so I’m not positive at the moment. Regardless, you have to find out what the Hantek one is, so you can choose the right option in the channel menu.

    • @atomsworkshop195
      @atomsworkshop195  3 роки тому +1

      Ed, check the paperwork that came with your hantek COP ignition probe to see if it is attenuated internally, and if so, how much. I was trying to find it myself online for you; and I ended up on Scanner Danners website, with people talking back and forth about it, and someone said to make sure you use an attenuator with it. That doesn’t make sense to me, because you would think it would be designed with a built in attenuator. Regardless, it should be in the instructions/owners manual. Make sure you find out. The last thing you wanna do is smoke your new scope. Good luck my friend.

      No problem. Wasn’t sure because from my view on UA-cam studios, your comment was right above Dave Sterls comment. Honestly Ed, every other car I tried getting a secondary waveform with, gave me odd looking waveforms. I was trying with the Pico paddle probe & the Micsig paddle probe. I tried different cars for about 3 weeks before I came across the good one, and it was off a Honda Accord 6cyl (03 I believe. I’d have to check my Autel to know for sure what year). This was my set up: paddle probe (cop secondary ignition probe) set to Voltage-Secondary Ignition-set at 5kx for my attenuator setting, Low Pass Filter at 30.000khz-Dc signal-and Normal Sample rate. For my voltage, I was switching between about 5V and 25V. Time base was between 1ms and 10ms. Also, even with those settings, it wasn’t looking so good until I changed my ground location a couple times. Unfortunately the Micsig’s SA204 COP probes ground cable is really short, so you probably won’t be able to reach the battery ground; instead I had to find a chassis or block ground. Now that I’m thinking about it, I guess (if I’m not being lazy) I could use my Power Probe 4 to supply a ground straight from the battery. Maybe try those settings, and hopefully that will help. Also, I’ve noticed if you use the automotive presets, and click Ignition, then click Secondary, then one of the three options; it sets the scope at 1ms (time base), but it sets the voltage to either 5kv or 50mv depending on which of the other three options (voltage kv, coil output test, or voltage mv) you choose. Sometimes I don’t even use the presets. If I do, and I don’t like the waveform, I’ll just start adjusting the measurements until I get something decent. I hope this helps you Ed, and I hope I’m not boring you with these long responses. I just think that’s what this whole UA-cam thing is about, helping each other. Oh yea, what COP probe are you using? Micsig, Pico, Wyze probe?

      Hey Leo, it’s been a little while. Yea, I’ve been looking out for your videos. The more the merrier. I learn something new regularly because of peoples videos. If I ever get a GoPro, I want to start making videos diagnosing my customers cars. Originally I was just gonna make a few Micsig videos, then start diag videos. Of course I’d still use the scope plenty in those videos. Unfortunately, I’ve learned that it’s a real pain in the ass and time consuming setting up and moving the camera constantly. I figure if I had a GoPro on my head, I can just record everything I’m looking at. Yea, finally got my invert option. I don’t know why it wasn’t there, but I have to say, they impressed me. I asked Jelin in one email if he could add it, that it is very important for automotive use; and he told me he’d tell them, and have it in the next firmware update. Sure enough, it was there. I can’t see me emailing Pico or Milwaukee or any other company, and them actually listen to me like that. They got 2 thumbs up from me. Yea, I just found out you can update the TO to the ATO. Someone (his name is slipping my mind at the moment) left a comment that he was able to do that. Before I bought mine, I looked everywhere for that option. I was gonna buy the TO, then later update it to the ATO. Apparently, all he did was email Micsig asking about it, and they sold him a license number for $200 to type in in the settings, and just like that, it’s an ATO. The presets definitely help with saving time. Anyway, get some videos out, and let me know when you do, just Incase I don’t see them. Take it easy Leo.

      Good morning Ed. I’m not sure if your comment is for me (Atom/Adam) or Dave. It says Dave, but I think your referring to my video. Hmm, well I’ll take the credit for the video & nice waveforms, and say thank you. I had to go through I don’t know how many cars before I finally got a nice looking secondary; and Dave can go make the videos of “some real work”, lol.

      I forgot to mention. You’re right I do need to make some videos of actually working. Actually, when I first started my channel, my plan was to make a few videos showing the Micsig scope (because I couldn’t really find too many when I was shopping for one, so I thought I’d make some for anyone else interested in it, or just bought one), then I planned to make videos diagnosing and repairing my customers cars. At first, I made a few doing just that, but unfortunately I accidentally deleted them (long story) during the editing process. I was really frustrated at that point, to say the least. A lot of time went into making those; all while my customers are in a hurry waiting on me. I have a small mobile automotive diagnostic & repair service (they are almost all in a hurry). Also, some people like to linger around while I’m working, and some aren’t thrilled about it taking longer so I can make a video. Anyway, I’m telling you all this to get to this point. As soon as I buy a GoPro (possibly best choice for this) that I can attach to my head, I plan on getting back to making those videos. I figure I’d be able to do it much quicker if I’m not having to constantly set up & relocate the camera. God bless & and have a nice day Ed.

    What does the term "back-probe" refer to? You are probing the circuit, which is clean - buy why do you say "back-probe"?

      Hello ReBus, how are you? When I say “back probe” it means, simply probing the backside of a wiring harness, by sliding an acupuncture type probe (or similar ) along side of a wire, into the harness, until you make contact with the circuit. I thought it was a common saying. Maybe just in the automotive field. That’s where I picked it up anyway. Thanks for the question and stopping by the channel, my friend.
