I have found if you put a little vinegar, in the canner with the water when canning, it prevents the white haze that sometimes forms on jars of canned food.

Just LOOKING at your kitchen makes me hungry...and nostalgic...and TIRED! Had almost forgotten how constantly busy my grandparents were on the farm-just the time & work involved in the "wall of plenty" in the back-Bravo! But the life you two are providing for your kids (I think I saw at least one unsupervised free- range child in near proximity to a potentially dangerous chicken-HORRORS!) is precious. The knowledge of where their food comes from(in every sense), their independence, etc. Beautiful. Just beautiful!

Peppermint tea is a great tea too, I live in a climate I can get it fresh all year, but drying it works too. Also to get more harvest although you probably have all the space you need - Square Foot Gardening, and this is my current planning project during Winter. I have just made my first ferment - a cabbage, carrot and caraway seed sauerkraut and can't hardly wait to taste it. Thanks for sharing your insights and inspiring people to live a better life.

Highly suggest a cat or dog. I've got a little black cat, she was trained not to leave our yard (never ever just let a housecat wander, they can get hurt or hurt other creatures). Every summer she goes out whenever she wants and keeps away rats, birds, and any other small pest. Our dog keeps an eye on the cat and scares off larger animals like raccoons or deer

I always waited until the jars were conpletely cool and gently removed the rings, as not to break the lids loose, then wash, dry and throw them into a box to use for another time of canning. After a nice collection, I never have to buy rings again. Although with certain items such as kraut, they may become rusty inside since you leave them on the jars. Eventually, I discard those. Nice work you have done there and believe me I know that's WORK! But a very good feeling to see the results. : ))

  • @loujeanadams2500

Loved that you pointed out why no rings on the jars, and you are very right. it is dangerous and not just because of false seals. I actually had a jar of canned tomatoes sitting on my counter once, and it spoiled and exploded.
Luckily no one was in the room when it went off, because when I heard the "Boom!" I went running to see what had happened and came to a sudden halt at the door , because it looked like a massacre had happened in my kitchen.
Red splashes everywhere and pieces of glass on the floor!
I finally figured out what had happened when, in looking everywhere, I spotted that tomato jar on the counter and the only thing left was about an inch of the bottom of the jar,, the rest of it was scattered around my kitchen, floor, walls,, just everywhere!
So, it's definitely a good idea to either leave them off all together, which is what I do now, or at least just enough to keep them on the jar, just a turn of so..that way if something does go bad, the lid can pop and pressure will be released. Also you will smell it and know to go looking for the culprit to remove it from your stock, as well..

I found you by chance today I was watching a bunch of videos on the Master tonic, Fire Cider Tonic do you know this? Anyway thank you ☺️ for the great info on storing eggs. My grandmother always had a barrel of salt in her pantry and she would put her eggs in the barrel, and the other way to store eggs that I learned is to use mineral oil. Rub that all over your eggs and this will keep them up to eight months. I to have a working farm and I like that you have all the five gallon buckets for all odds and ends. Again thanks 🙏Kathy in Montana

    Hi Caroline!
I love your videos, your peaceful and calm composer when you present and explain about the subjects you are sharing! Have you done a video on making dairy Kefir with grains? My husband and I have been brewing homemade Kefir for three weeks now and we love our 2nd fermented Kefir we put in a blender to make smoothies with fresh or frozen fruit! Oh so good! Also, do you use a vacuum sealer to seal foods? I love our vacuum sealer and have sealed nuts, pastas, and many food products sealed in mason jars. I have vacuum sealed; fresh crushed peanut butter, lard, oreo cookies, chocolate mints, dried fruits, crackers, rice and much more in various size mason jars. And do you use a dehydrator to dehydrate foods? Please keep the videos coming as I love how you explain about making various foods to preserve! Thank you for sharing your experience, knowledge and taking time out of your busy schedule to share with us that watch you on UA-cam! I watched your video on making homemade corn beef in brine and purchased a food grade plastic container to make the corn beef. I can't wait to taste it as we love corn beef, cabbage, potatoes and carrots! This video was very helpful to me! Thank you! My husband and I are retired now and its the two of us most the time for meals but my husband enjoys eating good foods and so do I!
Many blessings to you and your family!

Just found you. Love your kitchen and your pantry. I'm with you on the bands on the jars. I keep them on but very loosely. Mostly just so if mice find an open jar they won't be able to feed from it. Yucky, right? Just sub'd and look forward to what you have to show us.

Amazing! I switched to chalk marker and my labels stay put a lot longer. Thought that you might want to try.

Just found your channel, you make such great videos. Thank you for your time and hard work, I'm already learning new things. P.S. Love Josh's cabinets for the canned goods, I'm jealous.

Hi, do you have like cows, pigs, rooster, duck, horses and all the other animals on your farm thingy/homestead place ? Good full kitchen. You could use paper towels , cut them up in toilet paper size peices and use it for that.

Wow! Do you make your own spices? Doesn't the light in the kitchen cause the spices to deteriorate more quickly? So happy I found your videos!

Do you purchase your bulk spices like cinnamon and stuff? Also do you create your own pumpkin pie spice? Do you have a place for recipes - like on a blog or something? Brand new to the channel.

Hello. I am a new subscriber. I enjoyed the tour of your lovely kitchen. I would like to know about the picture hanging over your aprons. It looks familiar to me, but I could only see part of it in the video.

Very cool! Thank you! Have to ask though, what’s with the moving frame? It’s really distracting
