I got to hike down to Calcite Springs way back in the 90s with a geology class. I was amazed by the golden crude floating out of the outlet and into the river. So cool.
The oil is not an issue -- the seeps are tiny. But the hydrothermal fluids do put some nasty stuff into the rivers -- arsenic and mercury, for example. The levels in Yellowstone rivers are relatively high, but not so high that it represents a severe threat to health (although it does require extra treatment of some downstream drinking water). As and Hg levels in fish are also high but don't exceed levels deemed safe for consumption. You can read more about arsenic specifically in one of our weekly "Caldera Chronicles" articles: www.usgs.gov/observatories/yvo/news/arsenic-yellowstones-thermal-waters.
That's a good idea for an incoming intro, I'd love to learn about it! Metals, including the precious ones are accumulated through millions of years in hydrothermal areas, a context which concerns A BIT Yellowtone Park 😆.
I hope the staff and scientists of Yellowstone would always fight any fracking and drilling in our priceless National Park. Be careful of who you vote for, if you love your public lands.
There are GOP members of Congress - who are on the payroll of Big Oil - who have been trying to de-list wilderness areas adjacent to Yellowstone - in order to drill. Drilling could negatively impact the thermal water systems of Yellowstone.
@@imerrill53 Name one member of congress that isn't on someone's payroll with the intent of screwing this country or it's citizens for the purpose of power and riches? Pick a side, either side doesn't matter.
Yes it was epic 1 month vacation , the first night a wolf stole our garbage 😂we towed a geo tracker and left top at fishing bridge camp and by 11 that night we was freezing and singing on way back to camp
The problem I have with this and several other videos is that they say the earth is millions of years old. The correct answer is about 6,000 years old. We have a perfectly accurate book that tells us how the earth became what it is today. It’s called the Bible!
The oil is located in sedimentary rocks that formed when the region was an ancient shallow sea. But the heating from the magmatic system helps to bring that oil to the surface in the Yellowstone area.
Michael, has anyone tested oil for bacteria or viruses? I am shocked that biological matter is pulled from millions of years ago and this is not seen as a biological threat! Microbials from millions of years ago are a much greater threat than the movie dinosaurs being brought back! Just my ideas! Beautiful example and explanation of the history of the area by the way!
Very true that there is a lot of geothermal potential in Yellowstone, but the area is protected. Geothermal development is not even allowed outside the park boundaries, because that could impact features inside the park (this sort of thing has happened in many other places worldwide). But there are plenty of other places with great geothermal potential in the western USA.
You struck gold black gold like the Beverly Hillbillies did!!!!!! I bet they used all the oil in other lifetimes and that's why there's a little only left and maybe that is the reason for all the potholes and wholes there ????
I always enjoy your updates! Thanks for combining information with fun. Keep up the great work
🙋 I'll second that! This one was especially good, yet they're all worthwhile! 😎✌️
Jed Clampett hat in the thumbnail is a nice touch.
Well that was auctually a pretty decent video, grade a quality 👍
Beautiful scenery ❤
Thank you!👌
Great update! Thank you
Thank you so much😊
These Yellowstone updates are my fave. I wish there was a weekly short video talking about a cool scientific feature at Yellowstone.

Love your updates! Is that your guitar work at the beginning and end?
No, that's not us -- just something we found online. 😀
Drill for it at your own peril :)
Mike looks handsome with that hat! Like the bad guy in a Glenn Ford classic.
Sounds like Mike is fighting a cold. Hope he feels better soon.
getter done
Thanks for the update!
How about Gold
With the hydrothermal and oil seep being by the river what is the water quality of the river and is there any fish?

Why dont you drill down until you hit a hotspot?
The volcanic activity would eliminate mist of it.
Lets talk precious metals

Think ole mother earth is doing the only fracking in yellowstone in our lifetime and the next.

Is it possible for the Government to allow new oil extraction in a NP?
No. That would not be legal. Nor necessary. Nor supported by, well, anyone.
@@usgs Took load off my mind. Wouldn't want Exxon to see this video. BTW, legal doesn't seem to mean much in the US anymore.
is there oil in a volcano it only take millions of years to produce under pressure
The oil is located in sedimentary rocks that formed when the region was an ancient shallow sea. But the heating from the magmatic system helps to bring that oil to the surface in the Yellowstone area.
Oh great fuel for the fire when the big one blows
We have lots of untapped oil in America. We don't need Yellowstone's.
Your map a 1:11 is questionable. Don't know why you're using such an old map.
oil in Yellowstone? we must pump it out immediately so it doesn't pollute
Drilling and prospecting on Yellowstone is like shitting where you eat.
...pissing off a massive volcano is probley not a good idea.
😂😂😂😂

Why don't you start fracking & see how that works out for you?!
Thanks, no. We prefer to keep Yellowstone as it is.
Very cool, but Yellowstone has something, a potential, to fuel half of the US, geothermal.

I bet that Trump will want it. Drill, baby, drill!
The last administration wanted to drill it

lol, dream on
