Your feet are going to be destroyed, if you’re doing this all day, wearing those cross training shoes. I nice pair if heavy duty boots, that go higher up the ankle, with a thick, durable sole, is your first line of importance. I’d also get yourself a couple of other digging tools, should you encounter stubborn soil; clay, rocks, roots, etc. I dug by hand, my share of holes/trenches in my life. Tools I’d recommend having on hand for digging: Quality digging spade like the one in this video, a Mattock, a digging iron, or any tool to make your job go proficiently. Honestly, if you happen to have an old Army Entrenching Tool, that would help too. Obviously, have yourself some bottles of Gatorade/Powerade, and a gallon of water on ice in a large cooler, nearby, to stay hydrated! Plan your work- Work your plan! Usually, the more planning you put into anything you do, will result in a much better experience, and job well done. Oh, no offense, but if you are not used to this, extreme, physical work, you should take it easy, or just hire someone. Best wishes, in your digging endeavors!

We have a new double-use root shovel special for deep digging. It is with T shove head and in 3mm thickness steel board.
Tool makes the job, using a spade shovel like you are makes digging at top soil much easier
