She went to the office to make a complain, in a very disrespectful attitude she was told "YOU JUST HAVE HAVE TO PAY IT". Monies have been stolen from her bank account down there, when she reported it to branch manager nothing was done about it. It was her lost. That was the straw that break the camel's back. She sold her house and returned back to the U.S. System down there is broken. There is no law down there.

Same thing happened to me. No one in the house for over a month and $17-25k billed. They claimed they checked and everything is okay. No one shows up to check the accuracy of their meter. Regular customer don't get a platform to complain JPS don't care, they don't check on anything.

Unfortunately, in Jamaica, electricity charge has NOTHING to do with usage. If you turn on one light for a month, do not use microwave, iron, plug out every appliance etc, your bill going to look the same like your consumption last month. If you dare to plug in ONE Christmas light for 1 hour every day for 14 days , yeah mon, January electricity bill shoot up. If you query it, you are told it is normal consumption, you must pay the bill or face disconnection. Nowhere to turn. No one to talk to. NO JUSTICE. Safa is not the only one being extorted by them.
Exactly I believe that is what is happening to me. I am honestly trying to pay my bill and I am paying everybody's bill in the community. Nobody is home during the days by we get home it's almost bedtime yet the bill seems to be getting more each month. JPS is a very wicked company.

And to add insult to injury, the back and forth arguments between JPS and customer, the final conclusion after such arguments always ends in favor of JPS that will only extend to the customer a few days payment plan to pay the disputed bill regardless of the issue at hand, this argument about customers must conserve is all bull sh…that is only of benefits to the JPS Co. and they know this, why? By repeated experience, the said JPS will take all the time in the world explaining to customers how much energy each electrical fan in a household will consumed, but let us say that one of four fans operating in the household malfunction ( stop working) and is not repaired or replaced , it is guaranteed by experience that you will never see a decreased in the customer electricity consumption, a matter of fact, one will most likely see an increased instead, the customer service department is just there to add to one frustration and the customer ends up feeling fed up and just pays the bill in order to avoid the threat of disconnect of service which hangs over the customer head like the “ sword of Damocles “ On one of many occasion , a customer service representative, looked right, looked left and confidently told me at the former JPS payment location at Church Street, Kingston, that, customers conserving is nonsense and no matter how the customer try to conserve, it doesn’t matter, as the bill is pegged to the movements of the US dollar, especially when the dollar move upwards, but the customer will never benefit whenever there’s a downwards movement of the dollar and that appears to be true and logical based on the aforementioned experience, another thing is, whenever there’s an overpayment by customers, the company have a “ no refund “ policy which is an injustice to the customer, as JPS earns interest on that money in their custody, whiles the customer could have been earning same if the money was refunded to the customer, another thing is, successive government has allowed/ tolerated the JPS to exploit the people of Jamaica for too long, something that would not be accepted or tolerated in the US or other developed countries and this is why JPS and other companies asserting themselves to be “ investors “ likes Jamaica with a passion, cause they can do any and anything with their customers and get away with it, as simple as that! I am sorry Asafa was not using the JPS app. The app gives you a hourly/daily/weekly/monthly breakdown of your usage so you can know exactly what's happening
He is not lying.. I have the same issue. I have been away from my home since March 2023, and the first month after I left, the bill I got was more than the previous month before I left. I wrote to them because you can't get anybody to speak with on the phone. When I informed them that no one is at my home using any electricity, so bill is not correct, they tell me that I am to get an electrician to check my electrical wiring because that is what the meter reading is. There is no one at my home, my house is locked up. I have still not yet return to my home as I am overseas, and my bill is still fluctuating... one month a text message telling me, congratulations your usage is 10% less this month, then the next month it is saying that my usage is 10% more. JPS is just robbing Jamaicans and the OUR/the government is doing nothing about it..
If your usage suddenly decreased by a lot, they sent you estimated bills and will do it for ever if you don’t check it out. The government give them that power to pass the cost to paying customer
Actually the law limits the number of consecutive estimated bills they can send you. I think it’s two. My father took NWC to OUR and they had to sort it.
My mother was a 70 year old grocer and she was living by herself and she, basically, lived at the business place. Only a fridge (closed) would be using electricity BUT her light bill was twice mine and I lived with woman and pickney and we were at the house most of the time. HOW COME? How come?

I am living in New York. Yes boss, and also the Natironal Water Commission. In 2019 I was in Jamaica in November of that year. November 19th to be exact. Payed my bill and returned to Jamaica on December 15th. I got a water bill for $48,000. My bill has been running $15,000 - $20, 000 every month with no one living in the house. With no one still not in my house, the bill was $300,000 and with no solution to repeated challenge of the bill amount the service was disconnected. Jamaica gone Brethren!!

I bought a house in St Elizabeth over 2 years and cannot move in it. JPS send a bill for almost $300,000.00 and nobody have ever lived at the house. I am yet to move in because of this

My NWC bill doubled in about 6 months, even when im not home, i wrote a letter to make a complaint and a representative was sent to check the meter, he went to the premesis without my presence although i told him the time i would be home, claimed to have read the meter and he didn't see any leaks... the other month my bill went down and it's back up again, so im going to keep writing them, they came last month and installed the digital meter, so I'm waiting to see what my next bill will be... these utility companies have criminal employees who are ripping off the consumers, and the government needs to act immediately.
My NWC bill went from an average of JMD $4500 to $111,000 and NWC came out check and found no leaks, yet still insisted that I pay. Criminals!! I had 2 similar experiences a few years ago. I was away for one month on each occasion...and when I returned I received the largest JPS bill since living at the premises. They sometimes just assume that youre there and using electricity especially if its the Christmas season. Im currently experiencing the same thing with the NWC😢
I had the same problem about 6yrs ago. I went to Miami for a month and my husband was on tour doing play and my daughter was in New York. My bill was the same. I was furious, but my dear sweet husband said don't worry myself. So we didn't check it out

They did that to my dead uncle. He past away and no one lived in his house yet he was being charged monthly - they even raised it! They would come out and read the meter and STILL charged him for usage! We had to write to the corporate office, the CEO/or next in charge, and they ordered the area manager to sort it out and credit my uncle's account. And their customer care is ridiculous! They kept saying they're sending someone out to investigate and keep being so sweet on the phone, yet nothing was done! Go over the local office's head to the corporate office, via email and phone calls! It worked for us! I feel badly for the layperson who wouldn't know how to get that done.😣

Bills run in a 3 weeks cycle. Jps is disgusting. My bill increased when I went away summer too by 4500 and that increase has been a part of my bill ever since.
Maverick, I thought people who are selling electricity back to the grid usually use apps that show their power consumption in real-time. Asafa should already have the data on his phone showing days and times of his actual power usage. The guy should also be able to tell instantly if someone is even stealing his electricity when he is not home.
I can relate. I was at my previous address only about 5 days in my billing cycle, JPS said it was 10 kw used, for that, my bill came to almost $6000 . The bill said ACTUAL not estimate. When investigated, I didn't even consume 10kw so it was written off.
Estimated bill are sent base on your average monthly usage when they do not read the meter, although he did not used it they will still send an estimated bill however when they read the meter they should credit or debit the difference.
my light bill has been on average $15000 in the early 2000's when everyone else in Kingston 11 was paying $3000. we made a complaint to JPS and they said they did an investigation and it turned out we were being undercharged and they pushed it up $25,000... basically them tell we say "don't complain pay what's on the bill" now it is between $28k & $32K with peak of $44K. Just Pure Swindling

It is called Ratchet clause which all customers sign to. Your bill will be an average of the last 3 months whether or not you are using power. The only way you escape is if after switching off the breaker you inform JPS.

I wrote to them because you can't get anybody to speak with on the phone. When I informed them that no one is at my home using any electricity, so bill is not correct, they tell me that I am to get an electrician to check my electrical wiring because that is what the meter reading is.
There is no one at my home, my house is locked up.
I have still not yet return to my home as I am overseas, and my bill is still fluctuating...
one month a text message telling me, congratulations your usage is 10% less this month, then the next month it is saying that my usage is 10% more.

I am living in New York. Yes boss, and also the Natironal Water Commission. In 2019 I was in Jamaica in November of that year. November 19th to be exact. Payed my bill and returned to Jamaica on December 15th. I got a water bill for $48,000.
My bill has been running $15,000 - $20, 000 every month with no one living in the house.
With no one still not in my house, the bill was $300,000 and with no solution to repeated challenge of the bill amount the service was disconnected.

My NWC bill doubled in about 6 months, even when im not home, i wrote a letter to make a complaint and a representative was sent to check the meter, he went to the premesis without my presence although i told him the time i would be home, claimed to have read the meter and he didn't see any leaks... the other month my bill went down and it's back up again, so im going to keep writing them, they came last month and installed the digital meter, so I'm waiting to see what my next bill will be... these utility companies have criminal employees who are ripping off the consumers, and the government needs to act immediately.

My NWC bill went from an average of JMD $4500 to $111,000 and NWC came out check and found no leaks, yet still insisted that I pay. Criminals!! They did my 85 year old mother the same thing. I got OUR involved and nothing came of it. I had to pay the 24,000 so they don't leave her in darkness.
I had 2 similar experiences a few years ago.
I was away for one month on each occasion...and when I returned I received the largest JPS bill since living at the premises. They sometimes just assume that youre there and using electricity especially if its the Christmas season. Im currently experiencing the same thing with the NWC😢

I had the same problem about 6yrs ago. I went to Miami for a month and my husband was on tour doing play and my daughter was in New York. My bill was the same. I was furious, but my dear sweet husband said don't worry myself. So we didn't check it out

We had to write to the corporate office, the CEO/or next in charge, and they ordered the area manager to sort it out and credit my uncle's account.
And their customer care is ridiculous! They kept saying they're sending someone out to investigate and keep being so sweet on the phone, yet nothing was done!

Maverick, I thought people who are selling electricity back to the grid usually use apps that show their power consumption in real-time. Asafa should already have the data on his phone showing days and times of his actual power usage. The guy should also be able to tell instantly if someone is even stealing his electricity when he is not home.

I can relate. I was at my previous address only about 5 days in my billing cycle, JPS said it was 10 kw used, for that, my bill came to almost $6000 . The bill said ACTUAL not estimate.
When investigated, I didn't even consume 10kw so it was written off.

Estimated bill are sent base on your average monthly usage when they do not read the meter, although he did not used it they will still send an estimated bill however when they read the meter they should credit or debit the difference.

my light bill has been on average $15000 in the early 2000's when everyone else in Kingston 11 was paying $3000. we made a complaint to JPS and they said they did an investigation and it turned out we were being undercharged and they pushed it up $25,000... basically them tell we say "don't complain pay what's on the bill"

It is called Ratchet clause which all customers sign to. Your bill will be an average of the last 3 months whether or not you are using power. The only way you escape is if after switching off the breaker you inform JPS.
