I am a retired teacher trying to get rehired. My district outsource subbing to a 3rd party who takes social security from my check which I will never see thanks to Congressional theft. That did give me the year separation to get aletter stating I can be rehired. I have been used in acouple emergency vacancies as long term sub while getting passed over for other fulltime openings. When I called ATPE just to get some advice on the matter, I was informed that inspite of my continuing to pay professional dues in retirement I was not covered for liability insurance because I am paid by the district but by a third party. This insanity is not mentioned in their website. Should I find a district willing to pay for my 25 years of service and a fine to TRS I won't rejoin ATPE😮
Thank you for this video. What if the job you want has NOTHING to do with teaching or admin in a school system, what if it's walmart? Chick fil a? online marketing from home? Do any of those non education jobs cause a problem with TRS checks?
Nope. You can retire through TRS and work anywhere besides another TRS paying entity and it will not have any effect on your TRS checks. Thanks for commenting.
The way I understand it and have had it explained to me... As long as the entity paying you DOES NOT have employees who pay into TRS, then you are good. I will call them and then reply again with confirmation.
Just called them. It is really a gray area kind of situation. May be best for you and i to call them together to ask more specifics. Not knowing anything about the company or position, I can not really get a good answer from them. Thanks again for your comment and question.
Do you know why the districts have to pay the surcharge? I don't understand the reasoning behind it. Even with working full time, you do not get additional years of service added.
@@helptxteachers What is the average surcharge and do you think this makes districts not want to hire you bc they have to pay? I just found your videos and they have been super helpful! Thank you!
Not sure. I do know that the districts are NOT supposed to try to pass it on to the teacher in any way. That could stop schools from hiring retired teachers. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you! My question is .. Can I retire from TRS and then (maybe the following day), start working not under TRS but Social Security (like work for Home Depot or even tutor privately). Is this allowed? Great video!!
@helptxteachers but the money we pay into social security we will never get back right? Because of trs and not being able to double dip? What if you work at home depot for 10 years... still no way to get social security and trs?
@@krisannekey3218you absolutely can and will get SOME social security if you get your 10 years of paying in. The largest misunderstanding in teacher retirement is thinking that ALL teachers get ZERO social security. Just not true.
Hello, I retried in May 2024. I have started part time with the same School District driving a bus route. My question is would the months of June and July count as my 1 month calendar month to start part time? Thank you
Can you please clarify when you stated if an individual retires after 2021, that individual could, after laying off one full calendar year, return to FULL TIME, or do you mean can return as PART TIME EXAMPLE: Retired: May 2023 Unemployed and not working anywhere since May 2023. Able to return FULL TIME?
Lay out one consecutive twelve month period. Then you can work anywhere in a public school and TRS won’t be effected. ANY work in a place that pays into TRS for any employees during that year off, could make you start that year layoff over again. Hope that helped. Schedule a meeting if you would like more clarification. Never a fee to meet. Thanks for commenting.
Thanks for the question. I have found that a lot of districts are due to the shortage and need for good teachers. This is just what I have heard from my retired teacher clients. May be completely different from district to district.
My experience is they won't rehire but beg you to long term sub in emergencies where you have expertise but not give you the job when it does become an opening. And the evil thing is they can take back your TRS check if you stay in a vacant position( no teacher of record) for more than 20 days. How about fine the district not the poor retired teacher??? The district is cutting cost by not hiring at professsional salary.
Your videos are very, very helpful!
I appreciate you saying that. I need to get more posted. Thanks for reaching out.

Can you work for a private company that provides work for a TRS school district after retiring without sitting out 12 months?

Thanks for responding so quick. What about VIP kids? You teach kids english online. Is that ok to do with TRS retirement?
If VIP kids doesn’t pay into TRS then it is ok. I don’t think it does. Just ask them prior to taking the job.
That retire/wait one year/rehire subsidy is 16% ? The district has to agree to pay it but it does not come out of my pay at all?
Thanks for the question! The surcharge is 16.5% AND should be paid BY THE DISTRICT. It shouldn't come out of your check.
Yep and that is why they hired kids out of student teaching instead of an experienced retiree.
Do you know why the districts have to pay the surcharge? I don't understand the reasoning behind it. Even with working full time, you do not get additional years of service added.
I think it’s between the districts and TRS. More than likely a way for TRS to make money.

Absolutely allowed and will not lower or affect your TRS pension checks at all. Thanks for the comment.

Are districts paying the TRS subsidy for retired teachers, or will they just not hire them?
