Nice video, thanks for the shout out! Great advice here 👏👏 … immediately made me think of the recording of Clifford Brown shedding on Cherokee, and how many of the ideas in his iconic solo he had worked out in his practice.

I also had to play HYAMLC at an outside gig on Christmas Eve. I couldn’t hear myself (the monitor had failed) and my hands were freezing. So when it came to solo time I just… PLAYED THE MELODY. Ever since I’ve been like Lady Macbeth desperately trying to clean my hands dirty dirty DIRTY
We can enjoy the depths of jazz hell together in good company.

I think this was more common than people let on
1,800 is a bigger number, so... 1,800 eyes. Super-cool, man! I can't imagine why anyone would be mad at you for being semi-spontaneous doing a solo. I mean, I'm no jazz maestro, but I have to think that even when the greats go on crazy solo runs, they're combining chord sequences and little ditties (yep, technical term) that they'd practiced before.
In fact, if you're not allowed to use your experience and you have to be TRULY original to play a solo, just throw me out there to bang around on the keys for a bit. I'd have no idea what I was doing, and it would sound terrible... but I can guarantee that I wouldn't use anything that I'd learned before, because I don't know anything. Or they could watch you crush it and really enjoy themselves. 🤣

Actually the legend Jaco used to do this all the time. Jaco at heart was an arranger so he would take tunes he would take his tunes that he performed all the time and would take one and arrange a solo working on harmonic and linear ideas. Gig time he would start off playing some of his arranged solo before going into total improv. As the say practicing is programming your subconscious so when on the gig soloing you let go and trust your subconscious will send the things you trained it to your hands. Our brains are our body's computer and computers have to be programmed to do what you want.

Even the best of the best had their goto structures. I feel its a bit controversial to say that, but even given the indisputable brilliance of someone like Oscar Peterson, if you listen to various live recordings of the same tune, you here similar ideas all the time. Never verbatim the same, but clearly stemmed from the same preparations.
I came here to judge for myself if you broke the rule. Where is exhibit a? I think we all want to hear the solo 😐
Unfortunately there’s not video of the gig, but I did play something similar about halfway through the video. Look for the section where the piano pops up at the bottom around 02:50.

I was on stage and didn’t have the foresight to record it. There is a sample in the middle though, around 02:50.

A clickbait title, with a long-winded 5 minute explanation of how he didn't really improvised his solos, but then explaining how they were improvised with a pre-prepared mix-match of ideas... ((Literally everyone does that))) no one is 100 percent free-flowing new never before played patterns & melodic content when improvising... ⏳⌛ 😥
