How to make a BASIC JUNK JOURNAL from scratch - it can become almost anything! ~ BEGINNER FRIENDLY

  • In this VIEWER REQUEST video, I show a simple way to make a very basic junk journal out of a mailing envelope, then fill it with a variety of papers to form the signature. From this point, you can build it out to use any theme you wish, or keep it completely eclectic (which is what I usually do). There are many ways to make very basic journals, but if you’re a beginner, this is a great way to start and build your confidence. No digitals, no fancy equipment, nothing to go out and buy - just use stuff you’d otherwise throw away and amaze yourself with the potential!

    This gave me lots of ideas for my journals and spurred me thinking about what else can I put in a journal to help save the planet! I have resisted Franken paper because I placed it in the “too fiddley” category. However, the way you approach it is right up my alley. And why have I never thought of using a template out of one of those adverts before??? Always such good ideas! OH and I have never considered just making toppers that will sometime in the future marry a journal?!? I mass make other things, why not toppers! Have a great weekend Anne!

      Twila, I'm so happy you connected with some of these ideas! Yes, the discovery of the Franken-page technique has been sort of a game changer for me. The pages look so interesting, and allows us to use smaller sheets of paper that otherwise wouldn't have a place in a signature. I'm eager for you to try it. Thanks so much for watching!

    The salad is the perfect reference... because many people say do what you like... umm not sure what I like just yet... However, thank you for making this, it helps me tremendously as I'm just entering the junk journal world. Also love the set aside until you decide what you want to do with it... never would have thought of that.

      I, too, have an address book, wall calendar, checkbook, and clock radios in all our bedrooms! I was in Hobby Lobby looking for decorative brads and the young employee that I asked to help me didn’t know what a brad was. Once I explained it, we looked all around but couldn’t find any. She was very helpful but we just couldn’t find them. Next I go to Walmart and asked the young man where I could find brads and he didn’t know what they were either but another co-worker was able to look it up and tell me what aisle they were on. No decorative brads, but I have since found what I wanted on Amazon. I was telling a friend about this, and we figured that so many people don’t handle paper things any more so they would have no need to know what a brad is and what it is used for. Just surprised by it all.

    Great basic tutorial. I struggle with anything that uses Amazon packaging or filler paper as I don’t order from the Internet. Glad there are many work arounds. I also keep an analog address book, check register and calendar. At 69 years of age, my past address books are quite a trip down memory lane. Loved this version of Frankin paper. It was reminiscent of Megjournal’s Junk Journal January/July journals. Excellent video. Thank you.💜🐞

      @annekenlon  Місяць тому

      Thank you so much for these kind thoughts! Thanks also for the reminder that not everyone has Amazon envelopes - and yes, one easy work-around is just using brown paper from a grocery bag - essentially the same material when doubled up. I agree that past address books bring back memories - a real-life record of people's moves, marriages, deaths, etc. I still have my Mother's old address book and I love looking back at the pages in her dear handwriting. Glad the video was useful and thanks for watching!

    now... how about forthcoming videos on how to journal in that? I find the process of junk journaling much more challenging than the making... and as a result I 'make'... but don't journal. :). Sorry if you already said you plan to do that... and I missed it!

    • @annekenlon

      Hi, thanks for the comment! I actually addressed that "how to" issue earlier this year in this video - this may help: ua-cam.com/video/acCV4FG-Ce4/v-deo.html
      I haven't repeated the videos in subsequent months because I pretty much follow the same process every month. Make a list, group the ideas together, then choose the tags and cards to write on.
      The first junk journal I ever did was a gratitude journal, and that's also a great way to start. I'm not religious, but I do reflect a lot on things I'm grateful for, and I wanted to record it. Same process - make a list, get an idea of what I want to write about each thing on that list, then just grab tags and pockets and start writing!
      I hope this is helpful. Thanks for asking!
