  • This World Oceans Day take one small step towards fighting ocean plastic pollution. We’re teaming up Parley for the Oceans and founder Cyrill Gutsch to talk about marine plastic pollution and how you can take action.

From a dead whale found with 88 pounds of plastic in its stomach to small shrimp-like anthropods eating microplastics deep in the Mariana Trench, we have a serious marine plastic pollution problem.
An estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year. Marine plastic pollution is comprised of single-use items like soda bottles, bottle caps, straws, plastic bags, and commercial fishing nets and lines. The problem with this is that these plastics do not naturally break down. Instead, these plastics end up breaking into smaller microplastics which are more easily consumed by marine life and other animals - which, in turn, could end up being eaten by humans.
In this episode of One Small Step, follow Lucy as she learns more about plastic pollution by joining in on a beach cleanup organized by Mike Castellano of the Surfrider Foundation. Lucy also speaks with Cyrill Gutsch, the founder of Parley for the Oceans, about how industry is rethinking plastic and plastic recycling and repurposing.

I have reusable bottles, why pay for new bottles every week?
I also avoid straws and avoid drinks that come in plastic bottles/cups.
I also avoid plastic shopping bags by using cloth grocery bags or just telling cashiers that I don't want bags.
And for other thing that only come in plastic containers I fall back on re-use and recycle.

I keep almost all the plastic containers and bags my food comes in and reuse them. Cereal bags are great for sandwiches, mesh bags can be tied together to make dish washing scrubbies, medicine bottles I use to store bulk dried herbs and spices. Haven't figured out what to do with the plastic rings and caps from my soy milk containers yet, though.

Thanks for the suggestions! Wow I just thought all I could do was stop buying them, but for the ones still in my life, I really like your creative solutions! I still buy these things sometimes for other people on my household. Just not for myself. Trying to change the planet 1 person at a time.

But if you make fiber out of plastic, that will release more microplastic fibers everytime you wash your clothes. The most abundant type of microplastic is not breakoffs from macroplastic but microfibers from clothes made with polyester or acrylic. Or has the person thought about that and it doesnt produce microfibers?

I love this series. We already use reusable water bottles in my home, as well as coffee to go mugs. Reusable shopping bags are a must for me. Most of what I put into my kids lunches is in a reusable container, and we recently transitioned to metal straws. For me it's not only environmental, but economical. I don't want to waste money on something that I'm going to put into the garbage 30 mins later. Next on my list of eco-friendly swaps are reusable produce bags. 😊

Here are a few ways that I am trying to help fight marine plastic pollution:
    1. I no longer use plastic straws period.
    2. When I go for take out food, I refuse plastic eating utensils.
    3. I actively participate in the city's recycling program (Dallas, Texas).
This year as early as next month (March of 2020), I will work toward
reducing (possibly eliminating) the use of single use plastic bags. I
also want to reduce or eliminate the use of Styrofoam containers and
    other plastics as well.
I believe that I and every citizen in the United States can do better in
becoming a lot less dependent on single use plastics.

At our house, we recycle what can be done through the municipality. I compost coffee grounds and tea leaves to fertilize plants in my yard. I use a reusable coffee filter and a tea ball. Metal straws, mesh produce bags, cloth bags. Repurpose pickle jars, beet jars, sauce jars to store food and freeze in. Cardboard packaging on shampoo bar. Compostable bamboo toothbrushes. Low cost and no chemicals diy cleaning like vinegar and water for fiberglass tub cleaning and diy laundry soap. Lo more stuff I do. Good luck to those trying new low waste ideas.

Really like this channe! But you should have mentioned plastic from the fishing industry. 0.03% ocean plastic comes from platic straws. 46% comes from fishing nets. The left over percentages is mostly Asian and African countries mismanaging their waste. It's amazing to change industries to produce less trash. But stopping eating fish is truly the best thing you can do for the ocean. At the rate of fishing and pollution we are going at we may see fishless ocean's by 2048.

No plastic shower liners for me. Double cloth works great and smells better also- buy toilet paper without the inner cardboard tube-bars of soap rather than liquid- supports local people and is limited in ingredients- no straws- no grocery " recycleable" bags. Only canvas. bags sold in grocery stores break easily and are made of plastic even though they are listed as reusable. They just arent made well- Buy in bulk stores with your own containers- shop thrift before making a different purchase.

In our earlier times, near about everything was made from natural resources. Furniture to paper to household items. That time deforestation was a big deal as everything is made from wood and leaves. Then plastic came into use just to replace so so so much of item that we made from the nature. Plastic near about replaced everything like furniture to cabinet to cutlery to bags to containers. It has several use. It is durable, water resistant, cheap, lightweight. And now the scenario is we are using a lot of plastic and now it is polluting the nature. If plastic is harmful and toxic then why it came into use.
In my opinion harmful and toxic is our behavior that we over use everything be it plastic or natural resources. Natural resources based products are expensive. And we all time search for products that are affordable or cheap. So eventually we can't avoid the plastic. We have to balance. And to balance the basic mantra is 3R. We should reduce reuse and recycle everything be it plastic or natural resources. !!!!!!!

Avoid plastic is fundamentally flawed, inorder to do that, we would have to use paper, which would mean cutting down trees,
Or using cloth bags instead of plastic, but inorder to justify the carbon footprint of a cloth bag, it needs to be used ~500 times (which just isn't the case).
We would have to find new materials for the glasses he was wearing, the tires we use to get to work, the clothes we were, cos 100% cotton or other fivers take a lot of water to produce.
To conclude, plastic is not toxic, it's the way we use it is.

STOP LITTERING! I see people litter all the time even when we have trash bins all over!
Beach clean up is important but only a small part of the issue!
Recycle matter manufacturing is useful but again
banning plastic is just not practical.
