Haha as far as I could tell the didn't mind. I tried to keep the volume fairly low to not bother anyone. But if someone had asked me to turn it off I absolutely would have though.
Well, the easy answer was that I was riding it. lol But since I figure you might have been looking for a little better answer than that, I was coming back to Houston after a little family trip to San Antonio.
The condition of the roadbed is a joke. Are we in some third-world country? Why hasn't UP re-ballasted the surface and replaced the wooden 'ties' with concrete. The track speed is much too low.
Granted I don't work for the railroad, but from what I'm aware of the roadbed is in pretty good condition. UP does maintenance as needed (and did a lot of preventative maintenance this summer when the line was closed due to the Brazos bridge being closed) and they've mostly been replacing wooden ties with new wood ones. I assume the economics don't warrant new concrete ties yet. As far as track speed, it's actually pretty good. Track speed for Amtrak is 79 until Tower 17 (40 across the interlocker), 65 to Richmond, then 55 through town and 60 across the Brazos River bridge. It then jumps back up to 79 from there. However, I seem to recall there being a lot of speed restrictions out that day and that really hampered our speed. But that's them doing the work to get the tracks back into good operating condition.
Great ride, scenery, and catch with that full Ferromex lashup on the Eagle Pass train!
***** Thanks, Shawn!
Cool ride! Great catch on those FXE engines as well!
