  • I'm surprised by how short this list is.
If we're taking out the artists that took part in 'USA For Africa' single, then only 32 singers / Bands managed to have a Trans-Atlantic number 1 single!

The time span between _Red Red Wine_🍷 topping the charts in the 🇬🇧 and the 🇺🇸 is absolutely crazy and mind-blowing. 🤯

Red Red Wine was first released in the US in 1984 but it wasn't a hit at that time.

I would imagine the '90s wouldn't have much in common as the U.S. was big on rap & R&B, while the U.K. was more into electronic dance music.

UK in the 90s was rather unique, being a bit stuck between US and mainland Europe. Quite some hits from the US were bigger in the UK than the rest of Europe, but yeah, Eurodance was also bigger in the UK than in the US, although there are also Eurodance hits which were not really big in the UK, but a hit in the mainland countries.

Exactly. I've just looked at the list of the UK No.1's from the 90's and it was only in the year of 1994 that none of the No.1's reached No.1 in the US. None of the UK boybands, British and European dance acts or British guitar based bands that got to No.1 in the UK even made it to No.1 in the US.

@@autinerd there's also all the homegrown UK dance music; Chemical Brothers, the Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Faithless, Massive Attack, etc.
Of course, you'll see the biggest differences if you compare top ten hits. The #1s from the 90s don't reflect the 90s at all because it's dominated by long-running #1s like "I Will Always Love You", "Everything I Do (I Do It for You)" and "Love Is All Around".

It is mostly due to Billboard started a different way of compilation of the charts that leaned heavily on urban. Otherwise, the differences would not be that obvious. For example, No Doubt's Don't Speak was No.1 in UK BUT none in US, as no single was released. This would not be possible in the 80s.

    • @MrShortWhiteGuy
      @MrShortWhiteGuy 2 місяці тому +1

@@kennywong4239 Madonna's "Into The Groove" and Bon Jovi's "Never Say Goodbye" are 2 big radio hits in the 80s that never made the Billboard Hot 100 due to no single released. The 90s had lots of hits that never charted because record companies wanted people to buy the albums and not the singles. Much of the 90s Billboard Hot 100 charts seemed inaccurate as many popular songs were not charting at all which lead to extreme chart runs for the ones that were charting. They fixed it in Dec. 1998, but by then it was too late.

I live in Australia and I would like to see comparisons between the US, UK and Australian charts.
For example, I believe that the following songs hit No 1 in the US in the 80s, yet didn't chart in Australia - "Shattered Dreams" Johnny Hates Jazz, "Red Red Wine" UB40, "Foolish Beat" Debbie Gibson, "Hold On To The Nights" Richard Marx

Interesting how often an artist from one country would have a longer run at #1 in the other country than at home. Also surprising that some songs that would be expected to be automatic UK #1's, like the Stock Aitken Waterman-produced "Venus" by Bananarama and "Together Forever" by Rick Astley, did not reach that peak in the UK but did reach #1 in the US.

So, it appears the musical rift between the US and UK really didn't start until the '90s! The UK loved dance/club muic, and the US went big on grunge and pop rock, with rap mixed in.

Is this Billboard and Music Week?
There were other recognised charts in both countries with different number ones.
Eg. Cash Box in USA, or New Musical Express or Network Chart Show in UK.
The idea that any one Chart was the "Official" one is modern.
As an example, in the UK there were 4 charts. Together Forever by Rick Astley, which made Number 1 on US Billboard chart, was Number 1 on 3 of the 4 UK charts. But it didn't make No 1 on the Music Week chart, so it's not included here.

Only a few of these songs reached number 1 in Italy:
(in parentheses the position of annual sales)
    B.Streisand - Woman in love (3rd annual)
    P.McCartney/S.Wonder - Ebony and ivory (8th annual)
    M.Jackson - Billie Jean (7th annual)
    G.Michaels - Careless Whispers (2nd annual)
    S.Wonder - I just call... (1-1984)
USA for Africa - We are the world (1-1985)
    Madonna - Papa don't preach (2nd annual)
    W.Houston - I wanna dance... (9th annual)
    Madonna - Who's that girl (2nd annual)
Los Lobos - La bamba (1-1987)
    Madonna - Like a Prayer (5th annual)
Others went well, reaching at least the top five:
Survivor - Eye of the tiger (5th weekly, 23rd annual)
    D.Bowie - Let's dance (3rd weekly, 18th annual)
The Police - Every breath...(3rd weekly, 8th annual)
Cultur Club - Karma Chamelion (4th weekly, 14th annual)
Falco - Rock me Amadeus (2nd weekly, 18th annual)
Berlin - Take my breath...(5th weekly, 38th annual)
    M.Jackson/S.Garrett - I just can't stop...(2nd weekly, 8th annual)
    R.Astley - Never gonna...(3rd weekly, 12th annual)
    Tiffany - I think...(5th weekly, 50th annual)
    P.Collins - A groovy kind...(2nd weekly, 2nd annual)
*The year-end position was influenced by the release of the song at the turn of two years.
As you can see, some songs were not successful even if they were the driving force behind songs by the same artist/group released later.
To give an example, many Duran Duran songs have had great success in Italy, but not The Reflex (only 11th weekly and 61st annual), but also Pet shop boys and Men at work have had more success with other songs.
Out of curiosity I include the songs that have reached the first annual position in Italy:
I find these results quite surprising for what I remembered at the time. For example, I remember the success of many Duran Duran songs, but not the only one that reached the number one position in annual sales.
Video killed the radio star - The Buggles (1979/80)
(Out here) On my own - Nikka Costa (1981)
    Der Kommissar - Falco (1982)
    Flashdance… What a feeling - Irene Cara (1983)
The Final countdown - Europe (1986)
    I don't want your love - Duran Duran (1988)
    Lambada - Kaoma (1989)

@@ExplorHits She was 6 weeks at number 1. I don't really know what to think. I don't even remember it as a song (and I remember a lot of that band). I was only 16 years old in 1988 and what I remember is that Duran Duran slowly increased their success among the young Italian generations, reaching its peak in 1985, driven by their participation as guests at the "Sanremo Festival". That year they placed at number 1 both "The Wild Boys" and "A View to a Kill" as well as "Election Day" as ARCADIA (3rd, 4th, 5th best-selling singles in 1985). The following year, "Notorious" from the album of the same name also reached number 1.
"Ordinary World" peaked at number 2 in the 1990s.
In Italy there was also a film called "Sposerò Simon le Bon" (I will marry Simon Le Bon), an adolescent story where the protagonists are fans of the band, was a good success because of the popularity achieved by the band, now a phenomenon of custom (I don't know if it is an expression that is used in the English language) in Italy.
      Sorry for google translate.

You can divide the decade into two halves. Most of the video is during the second British Invasion, when a lot of UK hits made it in the US, albeit some time after they were a hit in the UK. This mirrors the 60s British Invasion when the Beatles & the Stones, etc. had lots of US hits. The second half of the decade is the SAW (Stock, Aitken & Waterman) period where the UK and US have different hits. Most of the tracks that appear in here are US hits coming over like Madonna's, with only really Rick Astley going in the other direction. I expect the 90s continues that trend.
Just look at this list of British artists having US hits - ua-cam.com/video/geVYgIIkjio/v-deo.html It drops off a cliff once we get into the 90s.

  • @davidcarrol110

MTV in early to mid 1980s allowed for a Second British Invasion where British and European acts outnumbered their US counterparts. The decline started in the 1990s with Grunge and hip hop in the US and faceless dance and Britpop became massive in the UK.
