Fusion 360 Form Mastery - Part 18 - Applying our Knowledge to Model Hard and Soft Details

  • In this video we will take a look at applying some of the tools we have learned to use to create one of the hard features of a BMW M2 Comp bumper. We will not be modeling the entire bumper, but more focusing on the process and tools needed to work with and refine these types of details.
    You can start with this dataset.
    a360.co/3F9C0C2
    And the blueprint images came off the BMW website where you can also find some reference pictures.
    www.bmw.co.uk/...
    In this video we will focus on the process of creating complex geometry by extruding each face. I also plan to cover the process done by G-Endo where we make the big shape of the bumper and refine the layout adding and removing edges. I wanted to cover the extrusion process first since it is a common workflow.
    We will focus on Extrude using Edit Form, advance edit form manipulation, inserting and removing edges and points and the general flow control of a shape.
    Please let me know if this content is helpful. This kind of detail work takes a long time so I usually focus on the bigger details. Modeling a car with this kind of detail would be 5-10hrs of video and I don't feel like it would be very useful to many people. Maybe a hybrid of timelapse and modeling tips would be best?

    Also I would love to see this fully modelled with all the details ironed out! I understand it may take forever to do a whole car but if you could even just do the bumper that would be amazing. Thank you again!

      I have a couple. There is a full series for a Ferarri 308 and one for a Porsche 911 RWB. There are also a lot of videos on a WRX.

    Been watching so many of your videos daily as im trying to learn fusion to eventually design my own aero mods. Your videos have been beyond helpful. I appreciate the time and effort you're putting in to be as informative as possible. Thank you so much!! Keep it u[ :)

      Glad to hear it Jarrod! If there are any specific parts or things you want to design don't hesitate to ask. You can send me pics in an email support@caducator.com and I will try to help out.
      I won't stay on Forms forever but have a few more things i want to do.

    This video was really good. It was great to see you modeling it in box mode and how you added the edges/control to make the smooth display follow and get the shape you wanted.

    The longer videos are def less digestible, but I really appreciate seeing the whole process. I think timestamped chapters make the longer videos more accessible.

      Thanks Sadhu, I have put chapters on a few videos but it has been a bit tricky since the videos are generally one topic throughout rather than broken up sections. As I do longer videos I will put some more thought into the chapters. Thanks

      There are loads of other videos with some hard edges. Fusion forms are ok with this but when they start changing direction it gets really tough.

      Yeah haha. Well I have been trying to add a video a day to this series and I wanted to do a practical video with some things we learned. I knew you had trouble with that bumper (which is nuts by the way!), so thought it would help.

    This is really helpful, thank you! Would love to know more about your keyboard shortcuts too.

    • @LearnEverythingAboutDesign
      @LearnEverythingAboutDesign  Рік тому +1

      Thanks. I don't change any default shortcuts. that usually makes it harder to teach when the user has a default install. So the main things I use with forms are ALT+1 and ALT+3 to go between box and smooth display. and CTRL+4 and CTRL+6 to hide/show edges on the model. Everything else is just clicks on the UI. IF I was going to configure something it would probably be Edit Form to some keyboard key.

    Hi Matt, thanks for all the vds, appreciated. However, to build bumpers with lots of curves like cars from 90s, would Blender have better controls than Fusion? I have just built mx5 1st gen soft top from Fusion but had a minor issue when thickening the surface. Cheers.

    • @LearnEverythingAboutDesign
      @LearnEverythingAboutDesign  7 місяців тому +1

      It all depends. Fusion will give you a surface that you can machine while blender will just spit out a mesh. If your end goal is to 3d print and modeling what you want is easier in Blender that is fine.
      Doing the thicken on the form can often times get around those problem but its not fool proof. Thickening the form will end up with overlapping faces (if a solid thicken fails), but you can control the inside/outside individually.

      I know its not the same but I have done a few detail videos. One on a helmet adding harder details. Also in the MR2 fender flare series I did a final "concept" and added hard details as well. ua-cam.com/video/LYhj9kGrOEY/v-deo.html

    This is very helpful and I would keep following along. I have been watching all of them as they come out. I think at some point maybe making something radically different to see what the design approach would be might be helpful....as I type this nothing comes to mind, but sometimes just analyzing the design appoach and work path can be helpful

    • @LearnEverythingAboutDesign
      @LearnEverythingAboutDesign  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the feedback! I will try and think of another "thing" and work on the design approach.

      Robert, based on your comment the video I did today was modeling a rim. Traditionally a "hard" model but I wanted to explore this as something different.

    • @lostmanamiga38
      @lostmanamiga38 2 роки тому +1

      @@LearnEverythingAboutDesign I saw that. I think there was some interesting exploration in the ribs smoothing that was helpful. Also your video on the ring jewelry creation I found useful. I have been sticking to videos showing the basic tools, l might look at some of you others now that go into making larger car bodies.

      I am hoping that Fusion does some more work with their quad mash manipulation soon. so some scanned data could be manupulated. I can dring in data, but soon as its remeshed of changed in anyway, it seems to go back to triangles....which defeats the objective.

    • @LearnEverythingAboutDesign
      @LearnEverythingAboutDesign  2 роки тому

      Quad mesh is tricky with Fusion. I am glad they finally have a quad option, but you are right, the second you reduce or remesh its triangles again. BUT, you can make a quad with Blender from a tri. I did a video on that. ua-cam.com/video/fDIQKzDsgE4/v-deo.html
      Not ideal to have to bounce around so much but it is possible....

    I'd like to watch you create a very complex shape like, say, a rear differential center section. They are full of curves, and edges and very few straight lines.

    • @LearnEverythingAboutDesign
      @LearnEverythingAboutDesign  Рік тому

      That would be an interesting one! Not something you would typically model with forms as those castings need a descent amount of draft in specific directions but hey anything is possible :)

    • @MrBIG4D
      @MrBIG4D Рік тому

      @@LearnEverythingAboutDesign Thanks for the reply! I'm actually building one now. It would be interesting to see what you think of it. I'm replicating this for a 1:16 model for a rather unique vehicle I own. I am very new to Fusion and this has been a literal crash course in how to use forms and bodies, in the same design! I have had so many issues building it because I am so green with Fusion. I get frustrated because things happen and I don't know why or how to fix them. I just get up, walk away for a while, watch more of your videos and then go back a try again. I'm getting really close. If you want to take a look at it, let me know and I'll send you the file as I have it now. Maybe you can give me a few pointers....Thanks again!!
