Worked on those old 63's for years, and the old CEP's too, faithful old things. Only ever failed once with a flashover in the line switch. Happy days. Still miss them now, and the old motors growling then singing along as you went faster.
Weren't the CEP's the most powerful of all the SR units once the Portsmouth express units were broken up? I remember my father telling me of the old GRI's etc which were demolished at Hoo Junc yard and the traction motors used for the BIG's and REP's for the express Bournemouths. Me old man was lifelong SR signalman who worked much of his life on lines where the CEP did roam. I remember being in a cab on a Dover express and the driver telling me the best setup was the 12 CEP plus one MLV as the formation was 13 coaches but the power including the MLV was for 16 cars making the trains very sprightly on the pullaway and up hills.
The original is a wonderful piece of history now, Stanley Holloway and all! We used to use it at LT's training centre as part of driver training - and a bit of light relief. I would love to find it.
Well so is this one really, there's no more MK EMU sets running alas. Takes me back to my time working on them. Only had one breakdown in 25 years, when the line switch on an early CIG went bang !
Only have to look down the line of the coaches to tell if a cord been pulled, those "butterflies" are the telltales to show which coach has distress that are on each coach.
If you get in touch with someone in the safety section at Northern Rail then they will help - we have just used the original version on our Drivers off train safety brief and also on our instructors course. That's if you haven't already found the original!
Whilst I admire Bernard Cribbins and although this is by no means a bad update I'm afraid that I don't think that it's anywhere near as good as the original ( ua-cam.com/video/pLRnuG5LVSw/v-deo.html ). Ken wrote the rhyming monologue for Stanley Holloway and 'Sam' was a real locomotive driver (as is the updated 'Sam'). It was never released so it won no awards.
Great video! Never knew David Cameron used to be a train driver!
It's Paul Tyreman, he's almost in all modern BR/NR videos.

Good
The 1963s and similar vintage SR units were good, honest, English Electric traction.

2:28 "Couldnt care if the passengers died of frustration"😂 love this!!
RIP Bernard Cribbins (1928 - 2022).
May I know, Bernard Cribbins, is the person who narrates this documentary?
@@zulkiflijamil4033 yes. And also the actor in 2014 CBeebies Old Jack's Boat
This was like something a kin to Thomas the tank engine lol... the Yorkshire accent just did it for me, especially since I'm a Yorkshire man myself
3:13 lmao claires face tho
Thanks for posting this video. Perfect for train fans.
After doing shunting work on the railway for many years. Many times I had to go a rescue units this had broken down.
Wonderful stuff! The 'plastic pigs' of course NEVER suffered a complete failure 😉

5:45 in and I don’t work on the railways… why am I still watching?
It’s beautiful to see so much effort put into a training video back then whereas these days we just computer image one and be done with it
Tyreman was 32 at that time.
Sadly there seem to be too many 1st Sams these days, and not just on the railways either.
Yes. It's a shame. People are so helpless these days

I thought that this was about the THIRD RAIL!
Narrative by Dr. Seuss?
R. D. It is Bernard Cribbings
Is the driver in beginning Paul Tyreman? He is so similar.
yep, it was in the credits
Think Paul plays the 2nd Sam
@@andrewjames1982 I think he plays the First and Third Sam as well!
He is

1:53 Is that Claire from the FGW video?
Yes, I believe Paul and Claire worked for Spa films who made many railway videos!

That's Claire. Paul Tyreman is the driver.
What music is that playing at the beginning?
Driver Sam Smith is Too good at goodbyes..... 😂
Good Lord, a 4CIG! I wonder how many times I grafted under that train in the Lift Shop at Eastleigh in the '80s?
