    I think AI generated art will work as great references especially for people with aphantasia like me, who are unable to form vivid images mentally. I think it does count as plagiarism and I think part of it has to do with how easy it can be because like if I take a photograph of someone else's artwork (like just the artwork and nothing else) and call it my original piece and say you can't be mad cause it's photography like.....that's kind of what the ai thing feels like where people essentially recreate someone else's art and say it's not plagiarism because it's a different medium. If it's identical or nearly identical that is plagiarism to me. I've seen people do this with other mediums and it always feels bad to me and it always feels like plagiarism to me. Like someine will copy someone else's work completely but change one tiny tiny thing like the color of the subject's hair or something and to me personally that is not enough. That is plagiariam to me

    • @artprof
      @artprof  Рік тому +2

      The thing about the AI, is that it's scraping from millions of images that are compiled to make one image. So while it can look similar to an existing image, is it enough the same to warrant plagiarism? Or to put it another way, how is this different than people who draw a very realistic eye and call that an artwork? Are they all plagiarizing off of each other because they all made a very similar picture of a realistic eye? -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist

    • @bonlynx
      @bonlynx Рік тому +3

      They can put in images of 1 artist and completely copy that artist. Is that ok? If I copy 1 artwork of yours and post it online and claim it's mine and profit off it would that bother you? What is the eye reference we're talking about? Is it someone's painting of an eye? Or a photograph of a real eye? Is it royalty free? If we have a royalty free photograph of a real eye and 10 artists paint it you'll get 10 different paintings and I don't see a problem here. If it's a painting of an eye with certain composition and lighting colors and style etc. And 10 artists copy it completely and the original artist didn't opt in to having their painting copied and then the 10 copiers post them online and all claim it's their original painting....yeah that's plagiarism to me.

    It's taken me a while to come to terms with how I feel about AI art. Ultimately, I think we don't need to be afraid of it as artists. I believe it will become just another medium of art, like photography became. I'm sure that AI will become more and more advanced, and be able to create images that are out of this world realistic! Things will change, and perhaps digital artists in commercial work will have to adapt the way they work somehow. But that's nothing new. Artists have always had to adapt to the changing world in commercial work. That being said, I truly believe that there will always be a place for hand made artwork, like real life paintings instead of digital. So for that reason, I'm not worried.
    Perhaps Bob Dylan said it best:
    "Your old road is rapidly aging,
    Please get out of the new one if you can't lend a hand,
    For the times, they are a changin'! "

There will absolutely be an art dark age because of a lack of opportunity for artists. If a computer can create something with a click, why spend a decade learning to create the same level of thing, why learn what composition is, what color theory is, what line weight is and anatomy and negative space and art history and gesture, why learn any of it. I think there's so much value in learning to create art and in creating art, i think it's the most valuable thing in the world, but unfortunately it seems most of the rest of the world doesn't realize that value. I suspect that if this was ai science or ai anthropology or something potentially eliminating human scientists and anthropologists people would be more concerned because they know the weight of humanity collectively forgetting important knowledge.

      _Image-to-image_ (img2img) basically takes whatever you have drawn/sketched/painted and makes more iterations on it according to a prompt.
      While with txt2img, the results are pretty much a gamble, with img2img, you at least have some control over the output, and after that, you can continue painting on top so it matches your style.

A lot of criticism of ai looking the same is directed specifically at what Midjourney had been doing and thru specific look and aesthetics. I have been making AI art for a year and got to say there is infinite variety and possibilities that it's capable of even within Midjourney itself. Currently Stable Diffusion is the best in the market and it will make artists lose the job. The reality and society we live in is about to change drastically on the same level as industrial revolution, AI will change the way we operate. Current AI models already are easy ahead this winning piece btw (typical Midjourney output, not very creative at all imo). So in art history impressionism came about due to the first cameras no longer could humans replicate reality to the same capacity so artists shifted to more subjective representations of the world rather than attempting realistic depiction that was outmatched by cameras

    I expect AI generated art will make fine art artists even more valuable and may open up the art world further to women and minorities.
    Humans will always look for a connection with others and for human perspectives, stories, etc.
    AI generated art stands to help create a New Renaissance of the arts. No longer strictly confined to the use of art mannequins or live models and exhaustive physical settings, this is going to be awesome for instigating compositions whether one is a digital artist, uses traditional art mediums, or creates hybrid art using combinations thereof.
    Sure, there will be some companies looking for cheap AI art for advertising, but there will be those illustrators that make their art more meaningful, catchy, & impactful to the intended audience. They will find ways to get audiences to really respond and they'll continue to be sought after. There's always a learning curve, there are always monumental changes in the art world now and then. They'll just pick up steam now is all.
    Artists finding a way to stay relevant creates art movements.
    One of my hopes is that AI generated art as a tool will create multiple new forefronts in the art world that will welcome and celebrate all sorts of artists through avenues, platforms, and events that will blow past the confines of the art world as defined by big name art galleries, art museums, and auction houses. I don't think those will be replaced, I just think technology like this will inevitably open up the art world even more than digital art and online direct sales have.

      And of course, there will be ways to combine AI generated art, photoshop, photography, the artists own input, 3-D printing, tech assisted cutting & etching of various materials (Glowforge is 1 tool for that)...
      This is going to be awesome!
      It's going to affect crafts to sell, making all sorts of objects for personal wear or for the home, cosplayers, others, mixed media art, & fine art.
      It's going to make the original arts and crafts movement look very tame.

      This is such a hopeful and thought out vision for AI and the art world! I really hope this future comes to pass, and that AI will help digital artists become more versatile, not hurt them. Your point about models and physical settings is especially exciting! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist

    A real creative person rather artwork, photography,music,writing or whatever is in danger to themselves.in the future we will see that using a.i.stagnates the creative mind. Using a.i.will eventually make us even more dumbeddown than we are at the moment.its taking the easy way out.we are quickly taking ourselves to the movies " idiocracy " and the movie about the people who never get out of their moving chairs and now they are all fat while that little robot cleans the planet earth as they voyage thru space.kids are no longer use their imagination while playing.if i had a child right now i will give them coloring books,creative toys and even tell them bedtime stories for them to imagine how the characters might appear.adults also need to hold on to their imagination and not rely on a.i.

    I’m trying to overcome my fear of AI art, probably because it can produce better pieces than I’m able to create. I think it boarders on plagiarism because it’s taking already produced images out in the ether.

      It's not plagiarism and its not taking images. It trains on a image set yes but it doesn't save any of the images their not part of the code when you run it locally. This is the software equivalent of it looking at the images without ever having had the data it's self if that makes sense. Like a human looking through a photo book and learning to replicate and draw what they see by looking at reference. This is one reason they haven't been swamped with copyright claims yet.

      Plus for me it's greatest use case is creating royalty free assets I can use to photobash. This way I'm not stealing someone's photos or paying for graphics. I can create and photobash what ever I want to my hearts content and even sell my designs without any copyright fears. It's nice I label it all as AI even if I do edit it but just to be above board.

    From the BBC article, Stable Diffusion founder is kind of an ass; calling us human being artists as tools. Well, the ai art is a machine tool, so the question is, can that tool be capable of expressing art by applying from human emotions and life experiences to paper or canvas? The answer is no; the founder has a lack of understanding of what art is.
    This ai art craze scares the heck out of me. (Sorry, if I sound rude and frustrated.)

      It's okay to be scared! The relationship between humans and AI has always been really fraught, challenging, and unfamiliar. I wish artists and programmers could be more used to learning and working together, I think it could relieve at least a few of these feelings of uncertainty. -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist

      The person crafting the prompts has all those feelings and emotions. His work crafting the prompts is just as valid as someone who is just slapping paint on the canvas and creating an “abstract” painting. Denigrating the work of one and blessing the work of the other is classic art snobbery and gatekeeping.

Typing words is crafting? Let's be serious.....
