Tony. This was awesome and entertaining. Please do more commentary like at the end. I spend way too much time on UA-cam. It's worth it to hear you at the end. Bravo!
6:08 is the most valuable thing to me. I’m not classically trained or anything, but I know enough to get by. It always frustrated me not knowing why something like an 11th is an 11th in some instances when it’s also a 4th
Got plonked on the piano with a piece that only has these symbols and I have to improvise it. Must say that you’ve boosted my understanding drastically
Thanks so much Tony, you deserve a medal for going through all that! I got the giggles at the end because some of the notation does become ridiculous and confusing.
Keep up the excellent tutorials!
All the best from Australia
I'm sure Jacob Collier's done it.
Thank you so much !! this video needs to be watched periodically !!!
Thank you. thank You thank you. So long has the rest of the world waited for someone to explain these chord symbols so succinctly. Thank you so much again.

It amazes me who gets the job to print those chord symbols. Slash chords for the win :)
Thoroughly enjoyable video Tony thank you so much for such a clear explanation of chord symbols.
Thank you Tony, wonderful tutorial🌟
Thanka a lot Tony for helping on interpreting these chords! Bless
Thanks for this video. It will be helpful for me as i started just learning piano this year ;)
I play guitar and funny thing is when i started many, many years ago, my friend gave me realbook. I spend like days trying to play F13 using all string with 6 notes... nightmare ;)
Thank you, Maestro. 🌹🌹🌹
Nice to have someone my age explain this conversationally and with examples. Liked and subscribed.
Awesome, thank you!
fascinating thank yiu
Thank you for the .pdf! How I wish they would change to regular note symbols and wouldn't keep this unreadable "handwritten" font...
Excelente !!
Gracias desde España.

Thelonius Monk probably did it before Collier lol
Very good 🖒
Could you do a tutorial on the song Rose Room?
Im new to some of these, but, at 5:50 it sounds like the chords at the end of Aja.
I always get confused about the use of the ninth on half dim chords. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
Not all ii-Vs are alike, secondary dominants are often treated differently to a ii-V going to the tonic. Some ii-Vs look like they are secondary dominants, but actually the tune has modulated (for example bars 9-12 of the bridge of Love for Sale - seems it modulates to the IV minor).
The ear guides my usage of natural or flat 9 but I can't for the life of me figure out a clear set of rules.
My most recent rule of thumb is: "ok to use on chains of single measure ii-Vs, ok to use on secondary dominant ii-Vs, and also where the b5 in a m7(b5) has been added as a colouration to a major cadence...but best avoided on tonic minor cadences".
Luckily if played quickly it can easily be interpreted as a chromatic approach note within a line. I find upward lines benefit from it while downward lines suffer (unless intentionally to create a "on-edge" feeling).
If emphasized in the right places, it can offer a mild Bartok-like dissonance, which is great if used tastefully (i.e. not just plugging it into every half dim).
As ever, the ears are king/queen, the explanations trail behind.
A ninth on a half-diminished chord gives it a lot of color. Sometimes it's appropriate and sometimes it isn't. It's up to you to decide
Do you know if anything exists that just plays the heads of all the tunes in The Real Book, perhaps with a piano backing? Like an audio version of The Real Book, where each tune lasts about one minute. Thanks.
Don't know but I'll bet it exists somewhere...
TONY you are great.
Write me a C alt and I will know what to play.
Thank you.
I suffered through it!
Whoa is that a 414?

1:30 novice here: why is the a d in a C6?
I came here because of confusion: was the flat sign (♭) in the superscript ♭9♭5 in G♭9♭5 referring to the G or to the 9? So was it G(♭9♭5) or G♭(9♭5)? The Real Book system is not consistent. The new version you show is far more inconsistent with what's around, so it is no improvement. The MA en MI idea is ridiculous. Are they starting a league of their own?
@@fritsvanzanten3573 the flat refers to the G.
@@TonyWinston Thank you, but how does one/you know?
@@fritsvanzanten3573 a flat or a sharp coming immediately after a letter must refer to that letter. I'll admit, it's confusing
@@TonyWinston OK, that's clear. Thanks again ;-)
Struggling w/ Real Book left hand voicing when score/lead sheet calls for chord whose notes fall outside key signature. What am I missing here? To accidental or not accidental - that is the (my) question😅
Good example is The Real Book’s version of “You don’t know what love is.“
Pay no attention to the key signature when reading chord symbols. An F#7 is the same no matter what key you're in. F#, A#,C#, E. Hope that helps
@@TonyWinston HUGE! Endless thanks. This may be my start to actually jamming for joy after all these years of not being able to bring my left hand in unless I used sheet music. My goal is to turn every song into a medley and play for hours for myself and enjoy the shit out of it.
Can’t wait to practice later. Thanks again.
