It's lovely to see how slim, happy and healthy people looked back in 1958 in Grafton. Not an obese person amongst them. A totally different story today. Obese people everywhere. It just goes to show how diets and exercise has changed for the worse in modern times. Not only in Grafton but throughout most of Australia and the western world. On a positive note, I love Grafton and I always will. It's a beautiful town on a magnificent river.
I'm a 70's child, but I love and admire life in those times. There was just enough technology to make life a little more comfortable, but not too much to make it invasive. Thanks so much for these uploads.😊
My mother from Grafton died in England. She wanted her ashes scattered in the Clarence River. Sadly it wasn't to be as we couldn't afford the fares. Instead we interred her ashes in a Cornish village which her ancestors left in the 1850s. She sometimes spoke wistfully of the Jacaranda Festival.
I spent my child hood at Yamba. We spent it on my nan and pops farm. They use to live on Lake Rd but was change to Carr Rd , Yamba . The farm has long gone but not my memories of it. I miss nanny Carr , poppy Carr and his twin sister aunt olive Moore. Pop also helped build the pool on Yamba beach. I do miss the 60’s and 70’s there. Long gone never forgotten.
I've lived in (South) Grafton my entire life. My family owns land here and around Ulmarra and have done for generations. Looking at the people, the buildings and the lifestyle back then... Makes me so sad when I compare it all to today...
Watching this makes me sad to think that my Mum and Dad turned down the opportunity for us to be £10 poms, when I was a kid, because my Mum couldn't leave her Mum. My grandparents have long since passed away and my parents too. The better part of this life truly is short. Make the most of any opportunities that come your way, if you're fortunate enough
Yamba beach was beautiful back then. Haven't seen it in a long time. That magnificent wooden surf club building below the white hotel on the cliff was still there in 1974, although it was decrepit having been flooded and damaged by an extreme weather event.
Exactly. Not being nostalgic, but I much prefer it as was to live in socially and pretty much every other way back then despite having far less materially.
OH, those where the days when woman touched up their lippy and wore dangle earrings at the beach. I am sure I am born in the wrong times. Now I get oh you going out, no, I just like to be dressed up and felling nice. I do housework in heels and dressed up, got to have some pride. I used to as a child look at the old adds of a woman hovering in her Sunday best. Never know when someone pops in for a cuppa and a chat.
Haha. If I wasn't already, I'd propose. "Marry me". = ] I remember well those respectful and considerate of one another days when men and women exhibited self respect, reciprocated courtesy and good manners were the norm.

Greetings from Grafton 🤩👍
Love the videos! Hope to visit Australia one day. Been wanting to visit ever since reading Bill Bryson’s book on the country.

Grafton in my beautiful home town. Your story is very touching. Thank you for posting it.
Usual high quality film from NFSA, bit before my time, get a little nostalgic of the 60s and 70s... Always look forward to seeing your next film.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for letting us know.

What is the road named after your grandparents?
My parents came from Grafton. My great-great grandparents came to Grafton in the mid-1800s, from Sweden and Germany.
Looks very beautiful there hopefully it’s still looking beautiful.
Yeah.. I was there on last week
Vickers Viscount VH-BAT Butler Air Transport, just before it was taken over by Ansett-ANA in September.
Yes, but still in BAT livery in the film. Later ('63) re-registered as VH-RMO.
Well done! I was just about to search the rego!
This Viscount was scrapped at Essendon Airport in July 1976

What's it like today?
The year I was born. Great era that's for sure.

That beach looks awesome 👏

how bout that, back in the day they made UA-cam-friendly size clips! who'd have guessed?
Where did our great nation go?
"Where did our great nation go?"
I think it went offshore along with our manufacturing industries ☹

What do you mean?
Ask the aboriginals.
Into the dark age of modernity and degeneracy, along with the rest of the great European nations.
Grafton prison was brutal. Especially back in those years.

Totally agree, Robyn...I love the 1950's "Stepford wife" look. It seems that these days, Femininity is frowned upon 🙄

Give me a time machine.
na this crazy
Crappy flood prone jail house now.
