I love surfing and I truly believe that making surfboard is such a beautiful form of art And that people should give surfboard makers more respect as it take so much time and so much skill !
I totally agree! I make boards for fun and have great respect for those trying to make a living in this industry because it’s a lot of work with small returns.
I worked for glasser in hawaii for few months. Biggest time saving tip is to use hard back sander on first pass. Like 60 grit. Especially on laps of glass on rails. Fast and end up with smoother end product but have to be careful not to sand through. Lol. Great video. I could almost smell the resin. Mahalo.
That was a great video and board. I used to surf in the 70’s and 80’s. Boards back then were better than the things you can poke your fingers through today.

Tanner Bendheim love your shaping/ glassing room . I take it its in your yard or garden?. I live in the UK its getting cold towards winter. I've stopped glassing in my bedroom due tio temperature. Thanks. It’s inside my garage. It’s a portable walk-in green house I purchased on amazon for $100. I live in Orange County, California so it doesn’t get too cold but I use a few heaters in the winter to keep it up to temperature. I think the the green house is 7x7x12. In the north of Devon waves are pretty good and plentiful.. Hey Tanner, Do you use anything to clean the board after sanding the hot coat? My last board I sanded then used denatured alcohol to clean the board before the gloss coat and ended up with tons of uneven spots. Gary
I usually wipe it down with a rag and then blow it off with a shop vac. I do also use denatured alcohol but very little. I just dab a little onto a rag and do a quick wipe down of the board. Be sure to sand in long drawn out passes to help keep the board even. I also get uneven spots some times, it’s hard to make it perfect. Good luck!
Hey bro, when you finish the second fiberglass layer on the top deck. Do you not have to sand smooth the cut joint on the bottom of the board (see 1:48) cheers
Yes, I always clean up my cutlaps to try and make them as smooth as possible. You can sand them down with a hard block with sandpaper or sanding disc. You only need to hit the rough spots or bumps to make it all flat and smooth. Just be careful not to sand too aggressive so you don't sand away the color if using a tint. Good luck!
@@jackzarifeh No I don't get it completely flush otherwise you'd probably start burning into the color. Just get it as flat as possible to make the hot coat process easier.
Fully in it now! I have my shape stand built, the green house in affect! Thanks for the inspiration. Just bought 4 blanks, glassing material, fin boxes.. one question, if you see this. For glassing, when do you use laminating resin and sanding resin? And do you use both? Thanks, i may learn the hard way!
Laminating resin with the fiberglass cloth and sanding resin for the hot coat to seal it. Use laminating resin for the fin and leash plugs as well. Laminating resin bonds to the board better and sanding resin allows you to sand once cured
thank you, with all my respect for u and all the people that make this kind of work, i didnt know it was such a huge amount of toxic products that goes into the ocean when it cracks. I will definitely invest in a more eco friendly surfboards from know on, you opened my eyes.
Nice little swaylock set up. Fill coat the lam, styrene the cut lap and don't use green tape. Cobalt will help with reds. But not bad bro. Reminds me of my dad's garage years ago when I 1st got started

Hello Tanner, great video man! I saw you put the fins at the beginning of the whole lamination process (before the cloth and first lam coat) but not sure why didn't you put the plug during this same stage? Thanks you!
Thanks man, that’s a great question. You can actually do the FCS 2 fins before glassing or after, I’ve seen it both ways. Most do it before and it’s what FCS advises as well. The leash plug and longboard center fin boxes go in after the hot coat. I don’t really have a good reason as to why other than that’s what I was always taught and is industry standard.

Sorry not yet. There are others out there on UA-cam though
Any reason you don't spackle the board before glassing? Have you ever spackled a board to compare?
I’m not familiar with that method. I think it’s for EPS blanks, I only use PU blanks.
Quick question, can you tell me if it's possible to put epoxy resin (as a final layer) directly after painting with acrylic spray, or i should use fiberglass? It is not super professional board, just first experiments... ;) Thank you!
Are you spray painting the foam blank or after the hot coat?

Hey Tanner, love watching your videos. Do you have any tips for laminating the swallow tail? I can never lam the buttcrack area on the first go. Also the swallow tips tend to get pretty messy.
After my lamination I put an additional clear patch of fiberglass on the deck side of the swallow tail to cover the section of foam that my cut lap doesn’t get. If your doing a resin tint color just be sure to get the color on that section of foam even if the fiberglass doesn’t cover it. Then go in with the clear patch. Works great. For the tail tips just make sure you are checking your angle cuts on the fiberglass and how they will fold before adding the resin so you have clean overlaps. Good luck!
