    Thanks for sharing. Better than expected based on the title. The bottom line: a master’s in DS doesn’t add too much if you have a bachelor’s in DS. This is actually the case with almost all business subjects (MSc in Marketing doesn’t add too much to BSc in Marketing). Which also suggests that (1) if you have a bachelor’s in DS, you should go e.g. with a master’s in statistics or CS (2) master’s in DS is useful for people coming from other numerate fields. Congrats for your Microsoft job!

    Oh my god, i just want to say thank you! In September i am starting my data science & ML masters, because i received grant from erasmus... i was SO scared, coz my bachelor degree is kinda super easy for my taste and does not go in depth about data science at all. I am relieved to hear that masters mostly repeats basics, and i hope my university will follow the scheme.
    Thank you! Now, i feel better :)

    I feel less alone now that I have heard your story! I'm currently 6 months away from finishing my masters in data analytics and I'm so bored! It's very introductory and since my bachelors focused on quantitative decision making and analysis, I am learning very little new material. I keep wanting to quit, but I push on. We have to take FIVE classes at a time and have no choice in what courses we take. So, despite knowing most of the material already, I am swamped with busy work. Thank you for sharing your story! I'd love to share mine, too, but I feel too shy about it!

      Thank you for your message, I'm glad this was helpful but sorry to hear you have the same frustrations in your study. Unfortunately these days having a diploma (even if it's as useless to do the study as you describe) can still hold a lot of weight so we have to kind of "suffer through it". I was lucky that Microsoft doesn't have strict requirements about degrees and such, which is the case with more of the bigger tech companies I think. Hopefully they inspire more traditional employers as well to switch to a more modern screening when they can assess your skills and personality and drive more than the name of the university you went to.

    I think the point of a master isnt really to learn things, but as a stepping stone to PHD/Industry, by opening doors to Research Lab/Internship. The core conflict is just the misunderstanding: "I got my bachelor and naturally I want a master." But that's not quite how it work. Most ppl dont get a bachelor. Instead they apply for phd/industry jobs right away. And the point of the master is just to prepare more for them. In the end, she ended up where everyone with a master will end up - a job. Why not just quit then? Ultimately no one will care if your CV say you are a master or a bachelor after getting experience and being a bit more senior.
    About learning - that can happen anytime anywhere. We have the internet, and the courses are online. In university you have tons of time for assignment and you can skip lecture, and choose the class you want - it is very flexible and force you to learn to manage yourself. When you get your bachelor you should have enough self management skill to not need class anymore.

    Hello, Lulia. How much did you apply the math that you learned to your job? Currrently, I am studying linear algebra and multivariable calculus. I love learning them. But I am wondering would I even use them on the job? There are topics that I do not fully understand what the use of them on the job like linearisation using power series (Maclaurin and Taylor series). I am asking this question to have a feel whether it is worth it to spend time on these topics. Thanks.

    • @IuliaFeroli
      @IuliaFeroli  3 роки тому

      I think it depends on the job, if you're working at a company where data scientists make their own models more than importing from libraries and you really have to speed up or optimize at even the smallest levels then understanding the math would be really important. Could also be that you do more high level work then just getting the main principles or intuition is fine

I did use to post quite a bit either from stuff I was doing myself in the filed (like going to events, or articles I wrote) and I tried to work on my network but not sure that made a big difference to be honest. A lot of my fellow interns didn't post much (or at all) and none of us were connected with the recruiters in advance - so I think they just filter on the type of education / location they are looking for (this is my assumption). Maybe make sure you have key words for your background and courses in your description to make yourself easier to find, would be a good start!

    Non-Hard Science Master's are mostly a joke (Hard Science: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology). Still find it bizarre that there is a BSc in Data Science. Data "Science" is a catalyst for research and insight which can be learnt in a commercial environment or even through a Bootcamp. Master degrees have become a psuedo science conversion course which allow people who don't have sufficient background knowledge (This waters down the course and people pick the path of least resistance in terms of modules) as a way to feed into the notion of the supply and demand problem of the commercial sector but really it's a cash grab by the academic institutions. Master Degrees should be a way of further researching a problem of interest that you've found in the industry. Please don't fall into this trap. I've seen many people who've done social sciences and business based bachelors struggle to find a place in industry as they've been sold a dream that they will get 6 figure job but that is far from the truth.
    Iulia made a smart decision by walking away from her master degree. Experience is very highly valued, she should only pursue a masters if she finds a certain topic in industry very interesting.
    If you are interested in getting a data scientist job then this my recommendation:
    If you are picking bachelors please pick a hard science, computer science or engineering (most mathematics and programming focused the better). Try to get a job at a fast-paced start-up, you will learn more.
    If you have done a bachelors which don't belong to this set then I recommend doing a Bootcamp for coding and ML and becoming a Data Analyst. This way you will know whether you like it and it is suited for you. Then do a masters which is focused around ML.
    Masters is NO LONGER REQUIRED as industry normalises. Pursue your passions but in a smart way, DO NOT follow the BUZZWORD.

      Could you explain me the differences between a data scientist and a data engineer, please?

    • @adityakarri1997
      @adityakarri1997 3 роки тому

      @@angiegranda6047 With large companies these roles are distinct, Data Scientists focus on model building, training and selection whereas data engineers are really dealing with information architecture e.g cloud platform and model deployment, they are might also do feature engineering, data preprocessing and data cleaning. If you work for a small company then a "data scientist" would take on both responsibilities. Companies need data engineers more than they need data scientists but they will advertise it as data scientist so you will apply for their role. I can't guarantee that you will get to do these things as some "data scientists" might only create dashboards. The more open-minded you are the better you'll fit into a commercial environment, you've got to stop thinking that you are a data scientist or data engineer instead consider yourself a DATA PROFESSIONAL. I hope that you find the role that suits you.

      Most universities in the Netherlands do not have a campus (just buildings where classes happen across the city), but may have some student housing for international students (had this in Amsterdam but not in Maastricht). They may also have their own internship program - the 4 year universities have a lot more practical opportunities and for the 3 year programs they usually help you find an internship during your thesis project.

    Do you think a masters degree is worth it when you have a bachelors in engineering and can self study the data science material?

    • @IuliaFeroli
      @IuliaFeroli  3 роки тому +1

      I think in a degree you will really explore the math and reasoning behind the models and build the intuition that helps you understand them better and know how to pick them later on, not just getting an overview of what models are out there. Then again you can also study the math yourself and watch some online lectures or courses so if you're up for diving into it I think it's also possible to self study :) good luck!

    So you graduated with a bachelors in the same subject and you were working in the field you wanted to. Why was a masters even considered? I Would only think its useful for those wanting to get into the field, no offense. Masters in many cases are made to allow people from other backgrounds (other STEM fields, sometimes even non technical fields).

    Why do you think Microsoft does not care if you have a Batchelor or not - because it is in their interest to do so now. If you would not fit their interests further down the line they would as easily let you go. It is sad the Master did not benefit you academically, maybe other programs would have. I am not saying that you made a wrong choice - you know better. However, I would not write off further academic education you are a smart girl and age is on your side.
