What is an Immersive Sim? (The Immersive Sim Kitchen)
Вставка

- This is an excerpt from The Nth Review #15 - The System Shock Series, detailing a big analogy for what immersive sims are and aren't with The Immersive Sim Kitchen. I'd meant to split this video out a while ago, but ahead of #16 for Grand Theft Auto V, it feels convenient to just have this in its own video. Go watch all my videos!

“Lets suppose you’ve gone on a date”
Man didn’t realize this video was in the fantasy genre
Great to see the System Shock review do so well! I still dream of that Immersive Sim kitchen.
So do I!
Growing up I knew I liked RPG games. I didn't know why. Now at 26, I realize it wasn't playing as my own character ina world that I wanted, it was choice of interactivity with game systems. Explains why lack of interactivity in games really stick out to me now.
You should try KCD. Good RPG and quite a bit of interactivity and the feeling of realism.
Your channel has terrific content, Nick. I’m a long time ImSim fan, and your poignant discussions add a new layer of appreciation and understanding for these beloved games.
I’m curious - do you have any plans to review Prey 2017? Would love to hear your thoughts on that game, particularly because you contextualize your analyses so well within the history and trends of ImSim design. Looking forward to any future content.
It's on my list...
I love immersive sims. Prey 2017 is my all time favorite and Dishonored got me into the games even though I dabbled in immersive sim style games before.
"Deus Ex a mile wide and an inch deep"? Wow, what an... interesting take by Doug. I haven't played System Shock yet (I plan to start on it next week), so I can't really opinate on that, but I find at least odd to say that Deus Ex choices and consequences didn't really matter, cause the final decision in Deus Ex made me SO conflicted between the 3 choices as I probably never have been before in a videogame. (Unless he's talking strictly about decisions gameplay-wise, like deciding to kill enemies or to silently take them down. In which case I 100% agree.)
But to be honest, the reason I was so invested in the story in the first place was because the game did a very good job at really immersing me on its world, and that was majorly thanks to the gameplay. Cause while those newspaper and public computer articles did an excellent job at presenting the story, the way they were implemented in the world also did an excellent job at making me _want_ to stop and read them. Like when I finally made it inside the Lucky Money during the NYC martial law period, taking my time to talk to people and read stuff actually felt rewarding.
Great video, man!
Thanks! I hope you check out the full video it's from too :D
Well, this was beautifully done!
Thank you! The full review is pretty rad too!
4:49 Nah, the real mile wide and inch deep game is skyrim.
Morrowind FTW
Skyrim? Ehhhhhhhhh. I suppose
@@NthReview I mean, it is literally miles wide with a massive open world thats full of copy pasted dungeons that differ very little, and its about as shallow as a cup of water
No the real one is Fallout 4
Check out STALKER: Anomaly, and The Dark Mod, both free imsims, the latter is a Thief spinoff made in the Doom 3 engine.
I looked up kitchen sink design because CharlatanWonder uses this word and found this. Thanks.
Thank you! I’ve got a ton of other videos too, including the one that this is a clip from
so by strange technicality do Baldur's Gate 3 and TLoZ:Breath of the Wild and TLoZ:Tears of the Kingdom all fall into the immersive sim genre as well?
Potentially! Immersive sims are really just very specifically built role--playing games with an emphasis on the built environment.
i would love to see you make a video on an arkane game, theyre probably the only AAA dev still active that makes immersive sims, theyre the guys behind deathloop, prey, and dishonored
Stay tuned...
For the almighty algorithm
It's kinda disturbing that most immersive sims don't actually match the definition of the genre. Even things like System Shock 1&2 doesn't. Most of the games claimed to be in the genre don't actually do the simulations the genre is lauded for, at least any more than any other shooter. Like, compare features in Duke Nukem Forever or Doom 3 to any immersive sim, and those are pretty much identical.
But interactive environments and flushable urinals do not an immersive sim make
Sure, but if you look at System Shock for example, it doesn't really have anything else going for it that other shooters _not_ in the immersive sim genre don't. Light switches, radiation, doors,... these are all things you find in non-immersive sims. The minigame puzzles and inventory tetris are probably the only things that stands out, but those are not what make an immersive sim.
SS2 only adds light RPG mechanics to the mix, but no added systems that don't exist in regular shooters.
(I am fan of the games claimed to be in the genre, and the idea of the genre, but I just don't see them matching the definition. Only notable difference tends to be usually overall ]slower pace, but that's not in the definition.)
@@mkahvi an immersive sim is defined by HOW you can play the game, not merely how interactive the world is. SS2 is far more an immersive sim because you can tailor your character to be more of a shooter or more Psi powers, or more of a hacker, etc. These are more distinct methods of playing. It doesn’t matter if you can flush a toilet, it matters if you can play the game as you see fit.
@@NthReview Isn't that more feature of RPGs tho? Or if not, pick any shooter with progression system that doesn't let you get everything (too few points or whatever), or has mutually exclusive choices, speaking of games like Hard Reset or Mass Effect: Andromeda.
@@mkahvi it is inspired by RPGs. Go watch my Deus Ex review (#10) where it explains the origin of the game and where Warren drew inspiration.
Space station 13 is an Immersive sim.
its cursed, but i'm right. Think about it.
So the best immersive sim is real life, so stop trying to simulate real life on games and go outside
Ugh, but the graphics.
@@NthReview yeah art direction its pretty bad
Immersive sims don't really exist.
review this comment
It's just dandy.
What the fook is this guy talkin aboot?
O.O
Why do all immersive sims have to look like shit?
Well, they are old.
Immersive sims don't really exist.
Weird take, but okay.
@@NthReview Its true though and frankly, the genre is now undefinable by and large. The term is a relic of the evolution of games which were, at the time, not that sophisticated. New games or games percieved od as ahead-of-the times were part of an early technological leap. The idea of the immersive sim was a moment in time, but doesn't really exist anymore. It is part of a historical moment.
