  • Forget Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord. The true pioneers of Dutch football are HVV Den Haag.
I visited their stadium in the Hague to learn more about the former Dutch champions.

Nice video Sam! Great to see you going to my city Den Haag! I am an ADO Den Haag supporter and there is a lot of football history in The Hague but sadly all the succes is more than 40 years ago. There are also 3 more amateur clubs in The Hague with big history. Those are HBS(3 league titles, 2 cups and 5 lost cup finals), their neighbours Quick(1 league title and 4 cups) and VUC(1 cup and 1 lost final).

Professional footbal was outlawed by the KNVB (FA) until 1954. The Netherlands might sometimes look pretty similar to England, we have a huge tradition and history of associations and clubs run by volunteers just for fun or the general bettering of things, including sports clubs. "Paid footbal" as would be the direct translation was long seen as corrupting the beautiful game (in hindsight, were they wrong?) and players who went to play in Italy or Spain for money have been suspended by the KNVB for the national team.
It was actually a charity game organized by Dutch professionals playing in other countries to raise money for the victims of the North Sea Flood of 1935 that triggered the change. People recognized that the level of the pro's was much higher and to keep up internationally it had to change. Clubs were already paying players secretely and even doing transfers though.
Great video, seems like a really lovely club and I didn't know the story at all. So just an addition because you seemed to assume that still being amateurs was an open matter to market forces and entreprise, it wasn't at all.

The Netherlands holds the record for having the most English speakers per capita of any country that does not have English as the standard language. I've lived there for 33 years (English expat) and I can't remember ever meeting a Dutch person who doesn't speak it. I speak fluent Dutch, but many expats don't even bother learning it. In fact, it can be hard to learn Dutch because as soon as they hear a foreign accent, they automatically switch to English.
      ps. Hup AZ Alkmaar, hup!!

    • @emdiar6588
      @emdiar6588 3 місяці тому +4

@@normanpearson8753 I'll give it a go. Not saying I'm an "expert" but I did study languages and I'm a bit of a polyglot.
Western popular culture, both in music and film, is predominantly in English. This is the direct result of the British Empire running the world for a couple of centuries, and especially being the founding source for American culture. Europeans are surrounded by English and hear it every day on TV, radio and cinema.
In the UK, turn on the TV and you only ever hear English, so you don't become familiar with the sound of any other language.
English is a Germanic language has more in common with languages spoken in Protestant Northern European countries. Also, UK culture is much more Germanic than it is Mediterranean.
I'm English but live in the Netherlands and speak Dutch every day. In the Netherlands they have always broadcast British children's TV shows with Dutch subtitles. In Germany, they have the same shows, but dubbed into German. This is why Dutch kids learn English much quicker than German kids. The farther south you go in Europe, the less likely you are to come across English in your day-to-day life.
The Romance languages (the actual name for "Latin based" languages) and people, are resistant to Anglicisation in a way that their Northern neighbours are not.
The Dutch love putting English words in a sentence, whereas in France, they actually legislate AGAINST the use of English in the news, if there is an equivalent French word already.
That hasn't stopped French people from looking forward to "Le weekend", and young French people hardly ever use "la fin de semaine" when planning a Friday night out. Oddly, in French speaking Canada, they do still prefer la fin de semaine, but that is probably because they are fighting to keep French alive in a country in which they are the minority.
      Hope that helped.

Thanks for the video and so nice to see football history. I checked the internet: oldest football pitch in the world is at Sandygate (1860!, Hallam FC in Sheffield). Wow.
Some of the first clubs in The Netherlands: HFC 1879 rugby, football since 1883 (Haarlem), Hercules 1882 cricket, football since 1889 (Utrecht), HVV 1883 (The Hague), Concordia 1885 (Delft), Go Ahead 1886 (Wageningen) fused with Victoria (1889) to become Victoria in1903, Sparta 1888 (Rotterdam), and Vitesse 1892 (Arnhem). I played for Hercules (amateur) as a child and loved the history of the club. My kid recently played against HVV and I pointed out the buildings and history to him. So nice to see how they try to maintain their history.

I support Vitesse Arnhem. We are the second oldest professional football club in the Netherlands. Unfortunately we never became champions. We were close a number of times. We came closest in 1914. We were champions of the East and played for the national championship with the champion of the South, Willem II, and the champion of the West, HVV. In the decisive match against HVV, a draw was sufficient for us. At 1-1 we missed a penalty, in the last minutes of the match HVV scored 1-2 and Vitesse missed out on the title. Now 110 years later, my beautiful Vitesse is in bad shape. Partly due to mismanagement at both sporting and administrative levels, my club was relegated after 35 consecutive years of playing at the highest level. We had a penalty where 18 points were deducted. But even worse, there is even a chance that my club will lose its license for professional football. Perhaps Vitesse will one day be able to take revenge on HVV as a amateur team. Every disadvantage has its advantage, albeit Cruijff.

The Hague had a lot of great football clubs in the "only amateur" era. And some of these clubs were more for the upper echalon in the community and they considered it inferior to be paid to play football. So when Professional football was introduced in 1953, they opted to stay amateur clubs, 3 of these clubs in The Hague are HVV, HBS and Quick. Still very well known clubs in The Hague.

There's one of these in most leagues
    - Aston Villa in England
6 of their 7 tiles came before 1910. They won 6 of the first 21 then 1 in the last 115 years.
    - Genoa in Italy
The most titles barring the big 3 but none for literally 100 years. As well as Pro Vercelli.

Brit in NL here. I’ve played cricket there. I didn’t realise the famous footballing history they have.
It’s not widely appreciated in the UK just how late Dutch football became professional. Pro contracts only started to become a feature in the 1950’s and didn’t become the norm until the 1960’s.

Do Corinthian-Casuals when you're next in Surrey, Sam.
They once made up the entire England squad back in the day but back to back relegations now sees them in Step 7 of the English non-league football pyramid. Their story is right up your street. Shirt sales to Brazil is a signifantly sized and much valued revenue stream.

The International Peace Palace that you featured, home of the International Court of Justice, was paid for by Scottish philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, which is why there was an information board about him. The little visitor centre there is well worth a browse.

There‘s FC Nuremberg. They‘ve relegated just 1 season after winning the league in the 60s. They‘ve since been the only ones ever being able to bottle a league win so hard.
In 2007 they did the same thing again, and relegated after winning the german DFB cup.
They still have the 2nd most league wins in Germany, and currently face the 5th consecutive season in league 2, while being on the lower end of the table.
As I‘m a fan myself I just pray that we don‘t fall down like many other old successors did. I wanna be able to watch games even when I‘m 80.

I think another team that gets forgotten about for their success in the Netherlands is Sparta Rotterdam. They have won the Eredivisie six times but I think not a lot of people know this.

Royal or Koninklijke HVV won all their league titles before football in the Netherlands became a people's game. HVV is one of the oldest clubs in the Netherlands. Other posh clubs worth visiting include Be Quick 1887 from Groningen, the only northern club ever winning the Dutch league and still playing in their 1920s stadium designed by a first time player who was part of the league winning team. EFC PH from Enschede, according to recent research, the oldest football club in the Netherlands. Royal HFC from Haarlem, officially the oldest football club in the Netherlands. Royal Utili Dulce (UD) from Deventer.
