  • This video shows single and double pulse welding aluminum with the Everlast 253DPi
    I am showing settings and adjustments that I found produce good or maybe even great results in single and double pulse.
    If you own a machine like this already maybe this video can help you fine tuning your settings and get the welds you always aimed for.
    If you plan on buying one this video hopefully gives you some inside on what this machine is capable of.

    Happy thanksgiving to you all! Enjoy this video, if you are planning on taking one of my pulse mig classes, this machine will be at my shop for you to try out! Please leave your questions in the comments. - If I am able to answer them, I will do so. If you feel the need to unload a bunch of garbage in the comments - hey it a free country. - you can do that, and I can delete it ... as I get older my tolerance for BS is getting lower and lower. I made a fair effort here to present an educational and entertaining video, featuring highlights and areas where things could be improved in my opinion, if you like it great - if you don’t like it - great. no need for forgetting everything your parents bought you about manners when you are commenting .... I work way too hard to provide quality content to let some person just walk all over it. Everlast did not pay me to make this video, the $ I will be making off UA-cam in the next year based on this video is most likely less than $100. It took me hours and hours to read the manual, learn the machine and make a good video, although I have some days daughter time, it did take me away from my family a little bit, but welding is my passion and I am happy to make video like this for people who appreciate them ! THANKS FOR WATCHING.

    We don't consider this to be full manual double pulse. It is still synergic. Double pulse is simply two layers of single pulse. Full manual pulse would require you to adjust the parameters of each layer of single pulse as well. You adjust manually: the peak, width and frequency of the double pulse. This is similar to how you adjust a TIG pulse, and is essentially very similar in concept. But keep in mind that the two layers are synergically controlled individually. This makes it fairly simple, though not entirely without some effort, to adjust because in this you are looking for "effect". In double pulse, there is more than one possible correct setting. On some brands you don't have this option and have to weld with someone else's idea of what works and have little or no leeway for fine tuning to your expectations or style.

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  4 роки тому +3

      for sure there is no shortage of fine tuning options. and like you said - to each it own - a guy coming from a tig machine who is used to and expects to have all those adjustments will surely appreciate those !

      I dont even have all my youtube videos monetized ....
      Right now making videos is fun, i dont want this to be a “job” where i am obligated to produce certain content or x number of videos in a certain time frame or post at least that many times per month or anything .....

    Happy holidays to you and your family. Thanks for using your personal time to make the video. Excellent content. I bought a 253 dpi last summer. I have only used 5356 with .045/1.2. James Swanson i ran 5556 which is like 5356 but with 1% Mn added which requires about 1.5-2 volts additional arc voltage. I am using .047” 1.2mm wire diameter. The difference in the amp value on the screen while welding vs. amp value set is that the unit "averages" the output amperage between the peak and base values while welding.

      @Everlast Power Equipment Thank You very much for this explanation, this clarifies what I observed. I was just not 100% sure how and why and what it all came together and although I downloaded and read the manual I get it -some machines show peak others show an average .... THIS explains it to me - I think the the welding results I had with this machine are definitely respectable so over all I was not really too concerned just maybe a little "confused" or looking for an explanation which now I know what is going on.

    Just pulled the trigger on this machine. I was looking at the 275p or the HTP. Your reviews of all these helped me decide. I'd love to have 275 amps and I mainly weld steel. However when I do weld aluminum I don't want to be pulling my hair out to dial in the settings for pulse. The 253dpi looks like a more refined machine and 250 amps should be plenty of power for me. The HTP seems to be a favorite of many but I'm not sold on that low duty rating or the single drive roller mechanism made from plastic . There is a reason the 253dpi weighs double. Thanks for all your time with these reviews. I love my Powerpro 256si TIG machine and am looking forward to a good and versatile MIG machine. I live in East Minnesota. May take you up on some training since you aren't too far away ;)

    I've noticed the same thing with not enough voltage adjustment on steel and ss . I found going up a wire size helps give you more usable voltage adjustment. I couldn't run .035 steel 92/8 much above 180-200 Amps without the puddle splitting into two. .045 changed that and runs up to 225 Amps well.

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  4 роки тому

      so you are running 045 in the 035 program? effectively getting less arc voltage the same wire speed ?

    • @ChrisB89071
      @ChrisB89071 4 роки тому

      @@ZILAwelds no I leave it on the .045 program. now when i run .052 i obviously leave it on .045 as there is no other diameter selection. I found running .052 I can run 0 volts up into + on the voltage. so far the .052 is my favorite on this machine with steel. it's worth noting I run 1/4" on up to 3/4 most of the day so I'm above 200 Amps 80% of the time.

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  4 роки тому +1

      this will be a challenge .... probably 25-75hz (depending on wire speed and thickness) .... and you have to pick your own pulse on time and your own background parameters .... and as the material heats up you cant just dial it down - you need to pretty much either stop, let it cool down to room temp again - or you need to lower your wire speed and voltage and with that the pulse frequency ..... it is a rather involved process ...

I’ve considered other machines like HTP Pro 220 (poor duty cycle), Everlast 253DPi, Everlast 275S and Everlast 275P. Out of these three which would you recommend? Thanks for the video. I'm just confused as to why you pull the gun away from the work piece right before you start each of the first three welds. It looks like you about and inch away when you start the arch. Is that on purpose. If so what's the reason for this?

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  2 роки тому +1

      Aluminum spray arc needs a longer CTWD ( contact tip to work distance).
      As a rule of thumb it needs to be about 3/4” ish inch. If in doubt maybe a little longer.
      What you describe ( me pulling away before starting) i believe that is due to my hood being always dark, classic fixed shade, so i touch the metal and then pull about that 3/4” away before i start welding.
      Now you say 1”…. Not sure i dont have a tape measure handy… could be its 3/4” and looks like 1” on camera or could be it actually is 1” and this way you might have a better view of the arc on camera …🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ i dont know

    Hello
    Thanks for the videos!!
    This one in particular regarding the Everlast 253 DPI.....
    You mentioned that Bob Moffat had done a video welding steel and yes he did do a couple of videos however no one has done any videos regarding this machine and welding with flux core....
    I am referring to flux core which requires shielding gas in particular products by ESAB......s such as 70 ULTRA and 700X.... I have contacted Everlast and have also contacted ESAB and have attempted to weld using some of these products (fillers) and unfortunately been given information such as is it electronegative or electrode positive and I get varying answers depending on whether I speak with ESAB or EVERLAST...... ! I was really hoping that considering you have done a couple of videos regarding the Everlast that you would perhaps do a couple of More thorough videos As mentioned pertaining to self shielding flux core and perhaps some of the other fillers such as stainless and general filler wires especially the set ups...
    I had purchased this machine about a year and a half ago and unfortunately have gone through more contact tips then I care to admit unfortunately in many cases I have not even gotten to an opportunity where I can make adjustments I would simply put (regardless of wire but this is including stainless steel and the various Standard fillers)... I would simply install a spool of wire attempt to do a weld my contact tip would be all but melted I attempt to increase wire feed through amperage and stick out but unfortunately by the time I make an adjustment and pull the trigger another contact tip is melted by no means am I a professional welder..... I am a steamfitter and often making brackets and supports for piping and components....
    where I do a lot of stick and Tig And had a much smaller Miller Mig machine But wanted to upgrade to something with some more power I don’t want to say unfortunately but I purchased the 253 dpi and unfortunately I am not able to really even weld two pieces of metal together without all kinds of difficulties spending an hour to try and set up the machine as mentioned changing several contact tips.... just in order to go from 1/4” hot rolled to Aluminum or 1/4” to 3/16” ...... I was hoping that perhaps you could do a couple of videos but if not perhaps one or two pertaining to steel and the shielding has flux core in particular ....
    thanks so much for your videos obviously I find these very helpful and which is why I am asking for you to possibly continue with this 253 dpi.
    Thank you

      if that you are talking about is anything like ESAB 7100 Ultra (which I welded a ton in the days .... ) then it runs for sure - it runs even on other real shitty machines (not that this machine here is shitty) - I mean dual shield flux cored and Esab 7100 in particular makes every machine look good) for example my Thermal arc 252i fabricator ... it had a mig arc I really didnt care for much at all ! but that wire make it weld super smooth and beautiful ... I welded a lot of BIG stuff with it .... (seeing it was advertised as a 300 amp machine ) that machine has an hour meter - after 46 hours or arc on time .... fried .... the thermal and overload protections where not adequate ... and I didnt pay attention to the duty cycle ... I cranked it and went to town ....
      If the duty cycle ratings on this everlast machines are as accurate as everyone claims. you should have NO PROBLEM welding wires like this and you should really enjoy this too !

      double pulse is a lot cooler and puts A LOT less warpage and distortion in the part but strength is comparable (maybe not identical ) but comparable to single pulse if parameters are dialed in correctly.

    Hello Peter,
    I met you a Fabtech a few years ago in Chicago . What is your opinion how on how this machine stacks up to and HTP. Apples to apples, bananas to rotten tomatoes ?

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  3 роки тому

      it's a tough comparison, and its not "fair" for me to run my mouth on a machine that I have 2 days vs 3+ years and over 100 rolls of wire through ... there for sure is some bias and some getting use to and learning the idiosyncrasies of the machine .... I can tell you both machines work ! they both weld fine. I like the remote control abilities of the one machine - same concept that miller and Lincoln have when welding aluminum (miller and Lincoln have remote control build in the push pull gun) for the one machine you can get an add on to put it on your mig gun to change settings while you are welding, as the material heats up, that suite is nice ...! one comes with a 3 year the other one with a 5 year warranty. Personally welding with both machines I did not notice a huge or ground breaking power difference ... they cost about the same roughly, I mean - you need to buy what you are comfortable with, look though my channel or search for ZILA REMOTE CONTROL and see what I mean if you are not familiar with remote ... loot at some other videos - see what other guys have how they like a machine years later ... call both companies up, talk to someone, have them give you maybe guys in your area they sold machines to - deal with who ever YOU fell comfortable dealing with. I mean in the end its kind if like buying a car ... the window sticker telly you 50% of what you want to know- the other 50% you find out after you own it ... (actual gas milage , drivability, handling .... ARC DYNAMIC, smoothness or crispness of the arc (not just what is adjustable abut also what is not adjustable ...aka factory pre programmed) how it welds on really thick or really thin material, and some guys like things one way and other guys might like things another way - so who am I to tell you which machines YOU will like) ..... also as long as your car/welder is still under factory warranty you also buy the dealership .... so you want to make sure you buy the right car.
      Look for a few more videos ... search for the 2 models you are interested in, call up the 2 companies, talk to guys who own the machines, if you are in the greater Chicago land you can come to my shop and look at both up close if you want ... at the end of the day you can buy whatever you feel works best for you, I dont have any affiliate links, I dont make a penny commission on any of this .... so pick whatever you think is right for you.I hope that helps somewhat.

    Thank you for taking the time to learn and review this machine, I imagine Everlast asked your evaluation due to customer complaints or maybe lack of sales.
    I'm still researching machines for myself, and while I didn't really consider this one earlier, I don't think I would consider it now. Not because of manufacturer, I just don't feel I need double pulse (but I could be wrong).
    Can you share the personal gun that you used though, thanks.

      I have had this machine for about a year now (just before weld.com and chucke2009 and others made their reviews). I suspect that everlast had a few you tubers in mind back then and I was one of them. I dont know nothing about sales numbers. From what I have seen in the field there is a fair share of Autobody shops that use this machine instead of the blues pro spot machines that cost 2-4 times as much. As far as how many they sell ??? no clue. as far as training for Autobody customers ... well .... THAT is a HUGE portion of how I make my living personally, it does not matter if it is pro spot, cebora, everlast, htp, miller ... a lot of Autobody guy need help to pass their I-CAR test .... and if they even want to use the machine in "real life" and not just have the certificate because they passed ... they typically appreciate an additional few hours of training ... Pulse mig is "easy" if the machine is all set up and dialed in, it is "involved" to set the machine up. some machines are more involved than others .... and it is also a matter of what YOU (or any operator) is "used to".
      As far as double pulse - yours double pulse for reduced heat input and for looks. the double pulse is even cooler than the single pulse which helps you control warpage and distortion better than single pulse .... it is a definite need? according to miller and the 350p ..... no you dont need it ... according to Lincoln ? most of their machines have it. so its up to you. I use it occasionally
      as far as the gun that in used it is an aftermarket replacement for a pro spot machine. the part number is 82-7025 you will have to google it and see where you can get a good price .... the original is a little over $300 I paid about 1/2 of that ....
      what are you planing on welding ? what material? how thick? how much and how often ?

      @@ZILAwelds thank you Peter.
      I only weld aluminum maybe 2-3 times a year. I tig everything as I don't own a mig machine. Most everything I do is heavier, so I've never seen a need. But I think I would find a mig machine to be useful, so I'm shopping and studying. I've talked to you before about the Fronius but upon learning about pulse, that is something I want. Leaning towards an HTP or Everlast, maybe the 275P. I'm also considering a Lincoln Invertec 350pro or an old Thermal Arc 350 ultra flex.
      Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

      how thick are you planing on welding ? are you planing on mig welding aluminum ? if yes the question should probably be how thin are you planing on welding ? there is no easy answer ... you need to find the machine that works for you. there is no such thing as the perfect machine ..... the 275p if you want to use the P part .... it takes a pretty long learning curve .... its doable. - but wouldn't be my choice if you only use it a hand full of times per year .... the 253DPi would be MUCH simpler ... I recently made a video on that .... the HTP PP200 or 220mts is also much simpler all of those machines I just mentioned are 200+amp class machines ... and you mentioned some 350 amp machines .... so I dont know what you are planing on doing, what material thickness you are welding what alloy .... so either way ... I dont feel comfortable to tell you - buy this or buy that not knowing enough for my taste what you are going after ....

      @@Demop_VW_garage the issue is that pulse mig is very involved and when you take all the synergic functions off ( and in pulse it does that) then you have your wire speed and your veto adjust, your voltage also doubles as your arc length adjustment and as far as pulse frequency the pulse frequency needs to increase as your wire speed increases ... my best guess from behind my computer, no really being in front of my machine is for 1.5 mm material your pulse frequency will be around 40 ish Hz, for 2mm maybe 60Hz and for 5mm in the 200Hz neighborhood .... your pulse duty or on time will be 60-70 % and your background will also be 50-70%. it takes A TON of time to dial this all in .... other companies the their best engineers and some crazy professor at a university or tech collage and lock them in a room for 3 month to find all those settings .... and THEN they program them all in a synergic mig machine .... how are you and I as the customers supposed to figure this out in a few hours and write that in those empty tables ....
      as a rule of thumb, dial your Frequency up till you have problems, then dial it back a little - typically pulse duty or pulse on of less than 50% dont really work well or dont work at all .... and background is kind of the same thing .... 50% or less does not work ..... now evert time you make an adjustment to one thing - like you voltage to set your arc length .... you need to go back and "fine tune" on the the other parameters again ....

    Do you think it could benefit from a push pull gun?

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  4 роки тому +2

      Richard-Lockwood a push pull gun does not really change the way how the machine works, its more a matter of what you are going to do with it.
      For example:
      You have 3 ways to mig weld with this machine
      1) pushing wire through a mig gun ( which i did ) and i never had a birds nest in the feeder ever. So that works really good. You are limited by the length mig gun you put on the machine. For 035 wire for example i would like to see 8 or 9 ft but 10 ft can also work very well depends on what ally and how much attention you pay. If you are one if those guys who coils the gun up really tight, puts a sharp kink in it and then drives with the forklift over it - forget it ..... lol
      If you have your gun and liner maintained and keep it reasonable straight a 10’ gun should work ok with 035 and especially 045. 045 some guys claim to be successful feeding through a 12’ gun....
      The benefit is - its cheap, its small, light, handy
      The downside is - short length
      2) spool gun - long reach, able to keep excess cable on a hose reel, can go around sharp bends and corner. The cons: big, heavy, bulky small wire capacity ( which later might not be an issue if you do smaller jobs and you just need the reach)
      3) push pull guns are perfectly suited for larger production stuff. Like welding up trailers or boats .... the advantage is great reach, being able to use large rolls, great productivity. The downside is cost ( i believe around $1200 on this unit) but if you have a need for it its a good deal. Also a push pull gun requires you to keep that cable somewhat straight as the aluminum wire is being fed through it and you also need to make sure that your drive roll tension is right so you dont get birds nests as it is a real pain cleaning those out with a push pull gun but if you have everything set up right that should not be an issue.

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  4 роки тому

      @@rustymachineshop9456 you have to find out what the trailer is made out of ... if you cant - you are in a bad position already .... you could make an educated guess ... for example a lot of bulk tankers are made from 5454 aluminum ... google it - best is if you contact the manufacture of the trailer and confirm your guess. THEN you have to find out which filler metals are compatible with your base material ... for example with 5454 base material 5356 is one of the 3 or for filler wires that is compatible . the next question is - what are you going to weld it to ? (lets say you install some soft of gusset or bracket) then you need to find out what the base material of your gusset of bracket is and find out which filler materials that compatible is with ... then you need to pick a filler that is compatible with BOTH base metals. Then you can weld it. also think of service temperature ... how hot will the metal be - more than 150F during operation, how much vibration and shock load will it see at that 150F+temp ....? then you may reconsider your 5356 choice and maybe go to a 5554 filler ? because filler metals with more than 3% magnesium in it are prone to a condition called" hot cracking" ..... this is not neccesaricly complicated - but I teach entire Saturday classes 7-8 hrs for $500 of topics like this if you are interested .... thats might be a good starting point if you dont want your welds to fail ....

    How does it compare to the HTP ProPulse 220?

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  2 роки тому

      What are you welding with it ?
      One big difference is the everlast does not have a remote control option ….
      If you weld aluminum that is kind of a big deal. If you dont weld aluminum, who cares ….
      Are you doing a lot of portable work? The red machine weighs about 40 lbs and the green machine weighs about 70 lbs ( both weights without wire spool and accessories)
      With 035 aluminum wire in single pulse mode both machines put out about 200 amps.
      As i was told by everlast with larger wire diameters and without pulse you can see 250 amp coming out of the everlast machine…. So if you are looking for POWER aka amperage the everlast has an edge on the htp machine!
      It also has a 4 roller feeder which in theory should be an advantage in feedability, however, since the liners in my mig guns are good and i dont put a knot in them before i start welding - so i personally dont feel the htp feeder being at a disadvantage - for other people it might be different ….
      At the end of the day, watch a few more YT videos - see what others have to say.
      You asked me what the differences are, i tried to explain the best i can.
      Will i make a purchase recommendation or draw a conclusion for you - NO
      You spend your money how you feel is right.
      Both companies have some sort of money back guarantee …. BUT BEWARE! You might be facing some charges if/when you return the machine …. The list is long and not all those charges apply …. Credit card fees, shipping, restocking,… etc ….
      So PLEASE contact the companies you are interested in and get to know the details of their return policies BEFORE you buy ….
      That is the only “real” advice i can give you ….
