Love how these tips can also translate over to Salmon Run. Sure its a pve mode rather than Anarchy pvp, but it’s still a fast paced team game you have to learn how to adapt on the fly to. The tactics are different but the core concept is similar. I wish there were SR replays tho to see what went wrong and how I could improve there 😅… Overall great video and excellent advice!

      This!!
I mean I have been both the "my teammates suck" and "I suck" person in Salmon Run but then find I play better if I am more focused and relaxed instead of focusing on winning. Because there are times (especially in clips that I save) where I am like "oh god that was silly of all of us. Who knew that three of us standing on the slammin' lid hovering above the water would result in us... falling into the water after we defeat it. Our final living team-mate must have been like "oh my god, really?!"
      I laughed so hard.
And sometimes that's my method, just imagine how the other person must be thinking.

@@angelsartandgaming Omg that sounds hilarious XD! And yeah I can agree with what you said about being more relaxed tends to bring better results. I was playing VP a little mindlessly in front of my family but I ended up making it all the way to the final seconds of wave 3 as if nothing was stressful about it. Sure since its VP it requires some cognitive skill of what you’re doing, but the point still stands that I was able to preform much better when I wasn’t stressed about the game vs when I only prioritize “winning” or whatever is going wrong. I even recently got the VP 200 badge for Sockeye during the Dynamo rotation through Freelance only! You have the right mindset and I wish you luck 💖

@@angelsartandgaming Understandable since conch shells are very important when they appear. I believe in you when you do return to the SR hellhole grind. If you want some advice for ranking up in solo, always watch your back. Practicing game awareness in a game with limited communication can save many coworker’s lives! See what your teammates are focusing and take a quick glance for anything that can be a threat to them. For example two coworkers might call out a Big Shot by shore, but then you look behind you and you’re the only one who sees a Stinger on the opposite side of the map! Pop special or whatever is most convenient in that scenario so your coworkers can continue taking down the Big Shot and you’ve essentially removed two huge threats from the board

Thanks for the video! I'm just a casual player who tends to stick with turf, but it's a good listen. I think it's great you brought up the topic of blaming others. All it does is create toxicity. And you never know the people on the other side of the screen.
One of my personal tips: when you're getting a losing streak, or you're in a match where you're being overpowered, focus on the little victories.
Is the opposite team too far along with their Tower? Okay, maybe you don't have the time to turn over the game, but take this opportunity to figure out good positions for defence.
You're being spawn camped in turf? Oh look, convenient target practise for my tri-stringer that I'm learning to use!
Or a personal example: I had a match where we were dominated by a mob of blob lobbers. I could not for the life of me figure out how to counter them. So toward the end I set myself a new goal, I'm splatting at least one of them before the match is over. At that point I stopped panicking about losing the match and focused on how to actually splat these guys, and wound up doing an immensely satisfying ambush OHKO with my Splatana Stamper. We still lost the match, but that wound up one of my favorite memories of Splatoon.
And the best part is that "little victories" are both motivating, good teaching opportunities and can push you towards an actual win. That OHKO moment taught me the importance of slowing down and the power of an ambush. It made me feel better for the next match. And often these little goals can serve as stepping stones to actually recovering and winning.

Whenever I get a bad losing streak or otherwise super frustrating game in pvp I move over to salmon run cause I feel like the mindset is very different in SR when you win/lose compared to playing against other people. You lose in pvp you might be mad at the opposing team or at your own. If you lose in pve you can't really be mad at the AI, so you'll either be sad for your teammates or just have a chuckle at unlucky rng.

  • @zezmogg934
    @zezmogg934 Рік тому +52

Ok, now this is exactly what I've been looking for within the past few days.
When I got to s+, I was not ready at all. I got knocked down time and time again, and I only chalked it up to unlucky matchmaking.
Then the splatfest rolled around and I was on team grub. You all know how that went. The thing is, this was the fourth splatfest I've ever been in, and I lost every. Single. Time.
This brought me to a realization: am I bad at this game? Am I a hindrance to the people on my side? I mean, the only weapon I'm good at is the aerospray, which everyone views as the single worst weapon in the game.
Then Squid School made a full weapons tier list and went to town when he got to the aerospray.
"The only thing it's good at is special farming," he said, "but it doesn't have a special worth farming for."
His words "are you meming right now?" Resounded through my head for weeks on end. So not only can I not play this game WELL, I can't even play it CORRECTLY.
So now I'm sitting here with -3000 points I AM NOT JOKING in s+0, thinking about how if I want to get good, I'll have to throw fun out the window. Have my three years of playing aerospray meant NOTHING!?
I developed a motto: "oh yeah, forgot I wasn't allowed to win."
Thank you, Haz. This should help me get in a better place.

    • @HDHaZmY
      @HDHaZmY  Рік тому +26

I don't think it's the Aerospray that got you stuck overall - but it does contribute to it, since you are playing at a disadvantage, so it's an easy culprit to blame!
It's always worth to check your replays and see what exactly is the reason of your losses and what you could do better to counter some of the negatives of the weapon.
In the end, there's a lot to it and it's not easy to answer, but it's a start!

Got a similar story here actually.
First time playing a Splat game, climbed through the ranks incredibly fast, winning all my series matches - got to S+0 and to a level where I can call myself decent enough to belong in this rank through Turf and Salmon practice, and overall just playing the game a lot. I'm close to 200 hours. Once I got to S+0, I started going into points debt for the first time, and lost about 10-20 series which got me to -1.5k or something. Not as bad as 3k like you, but still, you can surely agree that even getting to -500 is a devastating blow. Magically started winning again today for some reason, and climbed up back to -600. So just give it some more time my g. There are lose streaks and there are win streaks. And yeah, try switching to a different weapon from time to time, even one you're not good at. Tinker with the aim sensibility too, get out of your comfort zone - that should help you to A) have more fun B) get better at the game. If nothing helps just take a break really, get plenty of sleep, and come back after a bit.
P.S. Haven't watched the full vid yet, so Idk if something that I said earlier also gets said in the vid

@@jousis_ Yeah, sometimes Nintendo really doesn't want you to enjoy your session. It happens to me mostly when I have time to play in the morning, my lineups include:
      - Splat-focused people who suck at splatting
      - Base inkers in Ranked modes, and no they don't have missiles
      - People who might have modded their game to get rid of the pesky objective icons
      - That one wannabe sniper who stands in one spot, their end-game score ends up being 0/2 100p
      - The 2 or 3-people squad that gets taken out by the same isolated Dualies / Shooter user, detected by Point Sensor during the entire fight
      - That one player who thinks they're about to carry with their flank, only to find out their aim would miss a barn at point blank

Splatoon is the only online PVP/PVE game I can play, even though I'm not the best at it. It's fun even when I'm losing. Mostly I stick to Turf, but I think the fact that I can still earn exp even when I'm failing keeps me coming back? Like I'm not just penalized for "being bad", and I still have incentives to play even if I keep losing. Also, the fan base has a lot of surprisingly chill people if you can find other people to play/chat with.

I play with Chargers so I'm always in the improving mindset. Its like art, you keep practicing and improving, but not moving on to selling art despite being ready. Which is why when I play rank mode, I climb really quickly. Start of S3, I haven't haven't played S2 in awhile so my movements and aiming felt bad. Then eventually it came back once I got into charger drills again.
I watch a lot of streamers and I still see a lot of really good players still blaming teammates and comp. I get that there's weapon tier lists and meta, but I feel like their salt does get in the way of improving or even winning. Everyone, including top players, still have something to improve and it could be something like mentality.

I can't stress enough how useful Gem's videos are. Just working on game awareness, learning to often check my map, pay attention to opponents' gear abilities at the start of a match (especially ninja squid) and pay attention to numbers and special advantage, all these tips helped me improve tremendously.
Then there are his vids on specific game modes that are amazing as well when you get a bit more advanced. I'd advise checking these two types after watching his vids on weapon roles to have a good starting point.
As for the mindset, i'd say the most effective thing to do is to enter a mindset where instead of paying attention to your rank, you take every situation as a way to learn. And once again, Gem's vids help a lot, since he's a teacher IRL. So that helps me a lot to get into that mindset.

Great video overall, but just a minor correction at around 5:17. Your rank definitely factors into matchmaking. It's not a meaningless value, though the game does try to match you based on your power level within your rank. If it was meaningless, people wouldn't be complaining about being stuck in massive debt as after you lose enough, your power level would drop to a point where you should be better than your opponents and thus, be able to win much more often than lose, but this doesn't happen.

Sometimes you make mistakes, sometimes your team members make mistakes. Sometimes you're the best player on your team, sometimes you're the worst. Sometimes you're up against people with more experience, sometimes you aren't.
Sometimes the matchmaking screws you over, sometimes it doesn't.
It can be one of those things or maybe even a combination of them. I find it helps to remember that not everything is your fault, which in turn helps you improve because your mindset shifts into a more rational mode. You'll start to figure out when any of the above has happened, which means you won't be pigeonholed into one-sided blame as a result. If you do find yourself getting angry, then definitely take a break even if it seems hard to do, or find something that'll help relieve the stress.
Personally I don't take a break; instead I channel the rage into my Inkbrush, and somehow start winning games in the process. Different strokes for different folks though, pun thoroughly intended.

Excellent lesson in mindset. My karate teacher is often talking about "Beginners mind" and I have been thinking that Splatoon is akin to sparring. Nothing like getting kicked or punched to learn how to effectively block. Our egos get in the way so often, I especially liked you mentioning that blaming your teammates is ultimately unfair and that you only can work on yourself. We all start somewhere and want people to play with. Who wants to play with a big, old grump? Not me.
In Salmon Run I can get caught in being reluctant to play with more difficult (for me) weapons since I worked so hard to rank up. Letting go of that attachment and realizing that the only way to improve is to keep playing, losing, winning and mostly enjoying the game. Still working on it (gutted when I get knocked down a few levels quickly) and if I feel discouraged taking a break helps a lot. Sleep on it and give our synapses time to develop and learn new skills. It especially has helped my mindset to see that you can actually demote yourself voluntarily! Maybe it's nice for it to not be so overwhelming so you can catch up and figure it out.
Thanks again for your great videos.

I'm certain that Series matchmaking is just looking at rank and nothing else. I never saw anyone with S+ badges until I got to S+, and upon getting to S+ I went straight down into hell. Surely if it was matching on any other criteria I would see the negative S+ folks prior to reaching S+ myself, and when I'm in negative S+ I should be getting matched with players at my actual skill. The reason negative S+ is a phenomenon that exists is because these players are not getting matched correctly, apparently they're not even getting matched with each other it seems.
Hopefully they take another look at this next season, because something definitely is broken. Losing streaks should put you back down in a pool you can hang with, but this isn't happening.

That is actually a myth, I personally have seen S Rank Players even in my B Rank Matches.

I’ve been fighting every weekend to get into S+, using weapons I’ve been using since Spla2. Everytime I lost the Rank Up I kept falling into a pattern of expecting it, even though I was thinking “I ought to be better with these weapons”.
I had completely forgot how I got up to S in the first place: I love playing different weapons every time I pick up the game.
I knew what I wanted to do today was use the Hydra for the first time outside of Salmon. Little did I expect to enjoy my time with it to the point of ranking up.
And it was all because I was having fun again.

Don't forget too, that using the same main weapon as in S2 is very different due to different subs and specials.
Carbon roller deco was one of my favorite 3 weapons in S2, with the burst bomb sub.
Now with just the autobomb available, I tried to make it work a few different times, but have dropped it entirely.

Lol I was on a 18 game losing streak on anarchy open AND!!! a 20 defeat losing streak in salmon run a couple weeks ago (to be fair it was a tricky rotation but still). This was after taking multiple breaks over a couple days, i felt myself tilting and would walk away but would come back and immediately lose again. My battle stats got down to 15/35 and I went from eggsecutive VP 230 to profreshional +2.
I was definitely not playing my best in every game, some of them I was playing my absolute 100%. I’m in S rank and kept getting into battles with people who had S+ badges which was frustrating too but I hate anarchy series because it’s more stressful to me.
I’d say about 30% of the losses were due to unlucky weapon comps or playing against absolutely cracked teams and getting KOd within 2 minutes, then 70% as what I would consider a fair match regarding skill and comps, that we just ended up losing due to mistakes being made.
My unlucky streak randomly ended, but I was definitely getting really unmotivated during that week. I have been working on my in game awareness a lot more in S3 and squid school has helped significantly. When I lose I try to think of what I could have done differently and review my replays.
Knowing many other people have had losing streaks comparable to mine makes me feel a little better!

in solo queue i just assume everyone are npcs and i'm playing a high difficulty single player mode since no one chatting lol
other way to control your emotions/stress during play is not focus on the score. Just do your best (no point in adjusting playstyle to difficulty) and check score when your gaming session is over and stop playing for the day/evening/etc. it's not a physical sport where you have to gauge your physical capabilities/endurance as matches are just 3 mins each
when playing ranked, best to do warm ups/training first to reinforce muscle memory so you don't blame yourself on bad execution or whiff a move/maneuver
another good tactic is have a friend and sibling who also play the game watch our replay to get different perspective

No, I'm sorry. The rank system in Splat 3 is seriously scuffed. I basically ruined my experience by ranking up above my skill level and now I get crushed 3 out of 4 games, hidden points system be damned. I had a balanced win rate at Rank A. At A+, it's been absolutely miserable to play ranked at all. The games are over so far that I barely even have time to learn anything. I seriously consider throwing my rank up matches in the next season to never rise above Rank A.

    • @NadeemKazi777

Haha I’m stuck at A+ too. Got there with the tristringer but definitely got frustrated with it as it is almost unusable in stopping clam (?football) and rainmaker carriers. Switched to e-liters and had a laughable experience. Now I’ve decided to practice on my aim daily and play only anarchy open. You’d be surprised by how early I started winning again (especially splat zones which I feel is really good to play with eliter).
I like thinking of it as a challenge (like everything else in life) and I have set myself a goal of playing with eliter and scoped eliter (which is really fun btw) in anarchy open and turf for a month and then reassess my progress.
It’s been a week since I started and I have been winning lots of clam and splat zones. Obviously I lose more than I win, but that’s the part of the learning process and since it’s anarchy open, I don’t get penalised much. The long term goal is to get good enough with eliter and then rank up with series.
TLDR, just play open with your favourite weapon/pick a difficult meta weapon you’d like to master and play open with it. It’s amazing how quickly you start winning when you take the pressure off.
(Also, if you’ve read this far, one more thing. I saw some Japanese players matches on UA-cam and was shocked with how good they were. Went to their live streams and saw that they too get curbstomped and crushed once in 4 or 5 matches. So it is normal to lose badly since it’s a team game and odds stack badly against even the best of players )

The way you are saying that it that it's our fault for players die that we don't have control of. I get it. We got to accept our defeat. But we can't accept our team for not trying to win and quitting in the beginning or the last minute. There are some players carrying the team that make players in a lot of pressure. The thing is, it's not just u to blame. It's also that your team needs to take the blame for their own mistakes and that how you lose. But the biggest problem is an unbalanced team. Players teaming up with new players. Make it hard to win.

Hey, great video! I just want to offer a counter-argument to something you said, based not only on my experience as an X-Rank player, but also a part-time coach in other shooters and someone who talks to eSport professionals and aim researchers (and people like KovaaK) almost every day.
You talk a lot about the importance of muscle memory and recommend that people stick to one gun, but I very much disagree with that. "Muscle memory" doesn't factor in at all for aiming etc. and while it's true that the cream of the crop of professional players know the details of every gun better than anyone else, I don't think beginners should stick to one main gun for many of the same reasons you mention throughout the video: you are training bad habits and give yourself less of a chance to look beyond that.
The more (diverse) weapons you play, the more you get to understand about how Splatoon works as a game, how people move, how people should not move, what the strengths of certain weapons/roles are and what the weakneses.
Say you're maining a Splattershot, and you think you're playing well and need to stick to that weapon to improve. But then you switch to a Hydra and learn to position yourself with it. And as you sit back and anchor you all of a sudden notice how a game flows throughout a match much more than you would by pressing forward on the stick constantly to get into slaying range with a Splattershot. Your own experience with the game will teach you which Splattershot tactics are easy prey for a weapon like the Hydra, and which tactics cause you an issue. This will not only make you a better Hydra player, it will also make you better at the Splattershot and better at the game in general.
tl;dr: Learning the game wholistically is much more important than min-maxing your knowledge of a specific gun. Perfect mechanics can win 50/50 fights, which is good of course. But the best players don't take 50/50 fights, they learn how to take advantage of any minor mistake and avoid their own. Being able to instinctively read the game regardless of the gun in your hand will make you rank up more consistently AND across more shooters than just Splatoon.

    • @HDHaZmY
      @HDHaZmY  Рік тому

Thank you for the comments, even though I don't think we are actually disagreeing!
In the video I talk about muscle-memory on getting used to playing with a weapon, which I 100% stand by as an important thing, since swapping them all the time won't let you truly master a weapon.
I do agree that trying out different weapons is important not only to give yourself a chance to find the weapon that really fits you but to learn the game on a big picture level on what is every gun's strengths and weakness so you know what weapons you face and what their weaknesses are.
On that note - I think these are two completely different issues and topics, since you can still main a weapon and try your best to improve with it and also experiment with different ones and study them every now and then without giving up your major playtime on your main.
An an example you can totally play a few battles with a Hydra - but if your aim is to actually win and train - it's likely better to focus on your Splattershot to become even better.

I wish I had more friends that actually play Splatoon, cause it'd be really nice to be able to play with a consistently competent team. I'm not saying I'm perfect, but I am never a drag and the biggest problem I'm having right now is many times, I get paired with incompetent teams with bad weapon comps, but then on the odd chance that I DO get a good team, we play like one or two matches, then the freaking online service takes a dump and the team is gone! I just need a way to get a consistent team, because at the end of the day, Splatoon is a TEAM based shooter. Nobody can win all by themselves!

I'm trying to rank up for S rank but there's a massive skill difference between regular series and Rank up Series :skull:

Had my first go at a rank up to S and it feels like a different game. I heard S+ was a huge jump in skill but didn't know S would be as well. Went 0-3 and I was very clearly holding my team back. I actually felt bad. The fact you demote after seasons sucks. I want to just stay at A+ tbh.

I'm on S rank and I find it unlikely I'm going to be S+ soon... Sometimes it's my team that is bad, sometimes the weapons I get ranked with are so bad. One point you can't argue with is my internet or Nintendo's bad net code, which results in disconnects very often, so I don't really have a chance
