  • This is my first Corn Silage video for the 2022 season. In this video I am out in West Central Indiana at two different dairy farms (Same Farm but Two Different Locations about 15 miles Apart). In the video I bounce back and forth between the two farms and show you all the action as two different custom chopping groups work at chopping the corn in the field and hauling it back to the farms where several different tractors tractors push and pack the corn silage on the pile.
The video had a little weather delay so I was unable to video two of the choppers at the first farm but was still able to get plenty of action for this video.

I scratch my head when I see a 2 track tractor packing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the idea of tracks was to minimize compaction. 🤔🤔

Really good video Mike. You're right, there's something about chopping corn silage, love it. And, not too far my my neck of the woods in this one. Do you ever see any of these dairy farmers doing earlage anymore? Super rich silage lots of folks don't do a lot of anymore, I don't think... Been out of those circles for many years now, but IMO you can't beat the smell of good earlage, better than corn silage even. Would be great to see if you get the chance. At any rate, another thumbs up from me. Thank you!

My uncle is a dairy farmer in northern Germany. Harvesting season is always great, getting to see the harvester and the big tractors with their trailers. I remember one season that was so rained out that all the farmers had no other choice but to harvest in the rain and mud, tractors getting stuck was pretty frequent. They couldn't run double tires or anything because the field approaches and roads were way too narrow. So this one time a chaff tractor gets stuck (he was barely even loaded at that point), they call the "pulling tractor" who they had at the ready on the field (just to put into perspective how muddy it was XD). He attaches the rope, they start pulling, and the pulling tractor gets stuck as well 🤣🤣
So in the end they get the harvester. It was one of the first Claas Jaguar 980's I've seen, he pulls in front of both stuck tractors, they attach a second rope, the harvester starts his gigantic motor and pulls out both tractors. It was amazing to see for me, I don't remember how old I was, about 10 maybe.
Mike, one question: do you know what tillage operation this farm runs? All these big trucks in the field must create a lot of compaction, not to mention the corn roots themselves.

Good video Mike some very impressive operations out there hope you stayed dry while there, skys looked kind of angry in some of the background shots. In case you mite be interested, the boys here in Northern Maine are combining their small grain crops, oats, I think barley, and canola, they'll probably start potatoes in a few weeks, have seen harvesters being gotten ready, to go, and potato houses being cleaned out, kind of to keep you up dated on things I'm seeing here in my travels. If they are trying to compact the silage while stacking it, why don't the non stacking tractors that are compacting it use a small compaction attachment like a "final pass" to cover more area, use less fuel and speed up the process?
