@@namkha209 Hmm, probably copyrighted tho right? I'd lose monetization that way. D:
I have bin using MegaMek for over 20 years. It checks out most of the time
I appreciate the tutorial, but you need to adjust your sound mixing, could barely hear you without maxing my phone's sound output. Otherwise love your videos 😅.
@@chancecleavelin4834 Glad you enjoyed! Not sure about the sound balance though. That's actually the first comment I've heard about that. It plays loud enough for me when I'm on desktop at ~45%. Do you have the same issue if you're on Desktop?
my favorite though is Solaris Skunkwerks. Its the cleanest and most useful mech designer imo. Also color codes items inside the mech, so you can understand how much space you have, a lot easier comparetively. Never thought i needed more utility while using it.
Yarp! If you've got a fave editor just keep using that one :)
I love MegaMek, it's required for my games as it's how I get paperdolls ready for play.
It's pretty great! I like how it integrates with the other programs and I use it quite a bit for my research!
I love how your little jelly avatar is just dancing to hard rock in the outro like its the best thing ever. It never ceases to amuse me
Lol thanks. it's fun xD
@@nerdyOveranalyzed The wriggling right when the line "I can feel the vibrations" hits and the music sounding like the Mech Assault soundtrack are really nice touches.
Excellent tutorial. Thanks for doing this.
Thanks! I saw you also dropped a beginner tutorial for painting! Seemed pretty cool!
A trick I cant recommend enough. Put a plastic page cocer over your mech sheets. Then you can track damage and such with a wet erase marker. Easy cleanup, without damaging or marking the sheet.
Preferably hole punched ones, I keep mine in a ring binder for storage
Yupppp! Super good trick. I do that with mine!
Thanks for this! I made a Rilfeman that me make much more sense, Double AC-2s with a pair of UAC-5s. Also way to much ammunition so it can fight a couple of engagments without a reload (or make a big old mushroom cloud, depending on your viewpoint). All for a bit over 900 BV! Pick up your today and get a free, hopefully working, ejection seat!
Hey you're welcome Jonathan! It's a bunch of fun making variants. Glad you're having fun with it.
That gets hit it's gonna look like someone torched a fireworks factory.
To create custom designs of any unit in BattleTech you need access to Classic BattleTech TechManual, paper and some writing utensil, Slime :P Everything else is just additional help. Including MegaMekLab. No matter how amazing it is. Noticabely, MegaMekLab doesn't actually explain what stuff does and only provides book names and page numbers for equipment, aside from basic stats. So if you want to actually know how the ECM works, you'll have to look it up.
Yarp you could literally just draw everything on printer paper if you wanted. xD I don't think MegaMek would ever want to publish rules since they'd ideally be supporting Catalyst not taking money away from there. Probably some copyright issues there too,
@@nerdyOveranalyzed They have an "understanding" with CGL. CGL does nothing about MegaMek as long as MegaMek doesn't explain anything about the rules. And doesn't add newly released mechs to their releases "officially" (players can do that themselves via MegaMek Lab if they have TROs).
So while I approve of the MegaMek Lab love, you should've recommended people to get a TechManual anyway :P Though you absolutely can bumble your way through MegaMek and understand how stuff works (more or less) without the books.
@@nemamiah7832 Fair I guess about encouraging people to get the rules at the source! For my part I usually try to test any game I'm curious about for as cheap as possible before making a buying decision. Hence the MegaMek love. xD
You do realize the CGL guys use MegaMek to make new units, right? Like, they've talked about it plenty of times on the forums. It's not even a secret. MegaMek is basically the official unofficial Battletech creation tool.
One does not NEED an editing program to create or modify 'Mechs. You just need a copy of The Tech Manual and the books with the Advanced and Experimental Book (of which there are 2-3 of them) you're looking for, in order to do it.
That being said, it is SOOOOO much easier to use an editing program, as it does the math for you and most of them will catch any issues and prevent you from making what is an illegal 'Mech. It also handles the things like BV cost (BV2 for MegaMekLab) and C-Bill cost. I highly recommend using them where possible.
MegaMekLab is great, but I'm not as big a fan of the interface. Solaris SkunkWerks has a much better interface, but is behind MegaMekLab in terms of options, unit types, and "official" 'Mechs that come with it.
An excellent tutorial! Important to note: MegaMek does not have slime-enhanced endo-steel as an option yet.
Lol. Thanks for the recommendation!
MegaMek and associated programs. Are the only way I get to play BattleTech these days.
My main disappointment with MegaMekLab is that you can't assign/edit mech design quirks in that program, even though the quirks will be listed on the PDF printouts it makes. Quirks for your custom mechs CAN be changed, but you have to load your mech in the campaign portion of MegaMek, change them there, and save it. Or if you want to get deep in the guts of the program where there are configuration textfiles you can edit directly, once you teach yourself the required syntax. The last custom I made, I just couldn't be bothered to go to the trouble, so I ended up using the annotation features of my pdf reader to mask out the existing design quirks with white boxes and add text for the new quirks over top.
Of course, you may feel like changing the Design Quirks risks going against the recommendation to "try to preserve the 'soul' of the mech" but they're also a great way to tick off the "design with a weakness" checkbox, so your mileage may vary. And if you're scratch designing from a blank slate, sensible use of Design Quirks can add flavor to your creation.
Yep very true critique. Seems like something that's lacking in the program imo!
Or one could do it the old fashioned way: using a book (BattleMech Manual or Tech Manual), paper and a pencil. Please support the games you love by actually buying them.
AWESOME, thank you NOA, ever since RemLabs went haywire some months ago i was looking for a good replacement!!!
Glad I could help! Enjoy it!
@@nerdyOveranalyzed Do you actually have a name you go by on YT or is NOA for Nerdy OverAnalyzed ok?
Not every YTer likes being just called by their channel name, after all.
@@sim.frischh9781 Otto Uchiumi! :) But nerdy is find too!
@@nerdyOveranalyzed Otto is German, Uchiumi is Japanese, meaning inside, umi means ocean if I'm not completely rusted on my weeaboo-ean.
@@sim.frischh9781 Correct! It translates to "Wealthy Home Sea". I was supposed to be a tentacle monster but ended up a slime!
Otto = Wealthy
Uchi = Home
Umi = Sea
Going to be honest if you could make a video showing people how to use megamek as a whole. You would be a hero to so many
Lol, maybe one day. So many videos for me to still do!
Love me some MegaMek. 👍
Mega Mekin' :)
Megamek is great but clunky for noobs. I support any vid with easing anyone into using the program.
There are still things I get tripped up on.
Yep yep! I want the channel to provide support to people getting into the hobby so it grows! Doesn't seem to be too much out there. And agreed with MegaMek. I've only scratched the surface and used it for a few basic things. I've seen people do vids and content that features so much more!
👍👍
:)
I believe the full rules are in "TechManual", not "campaign ops".
Came here to say this
Now... *I CAN MAKE ALL THE VEHICLES I WANT TO CRUSH ENEMY MECHS!!!*
Yiiis YIIIIISSS!
I find the Mechfactory app to be a powerful tool for preparing Battletech games. My only complaint is that it doesn't support the Destiny rules ruleset yet, so I use DFA wargaming to translate the values into destiny sheets.
yeah i had trouble getting megamek to work (ngl still don't know how to do campaigns but playing random skirmish is fun and helped me learn for agoac with family (although i cant get my sister into it lol)
Hmm, seems like you're still using the stable release. That's about two years old now. The latest dev branch can convert units to Alpha Strike cards, and has a few extra options. Notably in the "Basic Information" section, there's a spot to put a link in to the unit's MUL.
The "Source/Era" box is useful for putting the creator in.
Might be useful to include how to change the color of various aspects of the "Assign Criticals" tab. It's very useful to helping to distinguish items in crits at a glance. I tend to favor making it share the same colors as Solaris Skunk Werks.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! :3
Battletech fans are very furtunate to have a tool as robust as MegaMek
Ah... or one can just use a pencil and notepad, like we did back when BattleTech was still BattleDroids...
D: damn!
@@nerdyOveranalyzedYeah, back in the old days when the only 'canon' designs were the original Unseen, there was only one autocannon (what you now call the AC/5), and dinosaurs roamed the battlefield... ;D
Do you have a collection of all the "MERC-X1" variants in your series, for use in MegaMek/MekHQ?
I use Mech Factory, since there is an app for it. Unfortunately don't have a computer currently, so megamek and SSW, out of reach.
Is there any chance you can do a Megamek Camping
Hmm a few people have asked before. Could be possible! Not sure yet. Maybe on my live streams?
I needed this BADLY. I tried to use this to spec out an Orion Variant with only the AC10 from the original, 2 Large Lasers, and all the heat sinks I could muster, (Mega mek gave me a 21/15 for the heat) Had trouble retrieving the file, so I must have saved it in the wrong location.
Would streaming this count as commercial use of Java?
Hmm, well I would make money off of the stream so maybe? I dunno I'm not a lawyer.
Why not use any MWO builder?
Because you want to play tabletop classic ofc!
