This was a VERY GOOD tutorial. You really nailed it with those explanations, what different things do and how you could think of them in terms of a more "traditional" synthesis. This really helped me to grasp things (just got my Reface DX yesterday :) ). Thanks!

I think this is by far the best tutorial, it lays out steps in the way a musician would construct a sound, not by some preconceived logic, but naturally. Also, each step is illustrated perfectly with a new sound quality.
Between this video and Phil Clendenin's explanation (sans heavy math) on the Yamahasynth web site, FM is going to be a lot easier for a lot of people to work with. Thank you very much!

Almost ordered a DX100 but found the Reface DX. I have a soft spot for old PC-98 FM synthesis chiptunes so I'm excited to get down and dirty with this, especially since I just got a text saying it was delivered. :D

Please make videos on how to accurately imitate famous synth solos, from such classics as: ELP'S Luck Man, In the Beginning, Edgar Winter's Frankenstein, etc. That's my goal, to use the DX to play the synth solos on the keyboard, while listening to the remastered radio versions available on UA-cam! Oh, yeah!
Thanks for sharing! This was really useful. While the Reface's screen is a vast improvement over the DX7, I still wish Yamaha had released a standalone editor with it.
+Alex S. Glad you found it useful! Agree with Frau Hase on the knobs, it's a tricky choice, as cheap knobs would have been worse. I find the touch-controls ok to use, but I lost count on how many times I try to adjust parameters directly on the screen :-S
I find it difficult to use the touch sliders precisely. And same here re pressing the screen. 😄 I feel, rotary encoders would have been ok for the purpose.

Maybe someone will make a battery operated oscilloscope for the DX, that would plug into the line out jack? It would attach to the DX by sticky Velcro, so that you can remove it, when you pack up the synth.

The Reface line is still alluring in spite of it’s annoying little quirks. I have a feeling that people with synth-caves is much more likely to fire up a Reface for couch noodling/ composing before their Jupiter’s or DSI's... Pretty please Yamaha: drop a Mk2's soon! Reface SY.. Oooh Yeah!
The DX is sequenced from the QX5fd sequencer, the simple drum beat was programmed directly into the internal sequencer of the RX11 and synced via MIDI.
Sorry but I can't see how anyone thinks this is useful. You can't see what the user is doing wuth their right hand. They are pressing buttons but you can't see what they are doing. I would really like to see this but I can't. I have tried this on various devices but all are exactly the same.

EVERY synth should have an oscilloscope, now that you mention it. But you're right, it would really help to visualize FM on the DX.

Thank you! Yes, all operators can be tuned, for instance an octave or two apart as you describe, but also fifths etc.
