To this day, there are only two categories of people who watched this movie. Category 1: "This Isn't Scary It's Stupid WTF Is The Point?" (People Without A Functioning Imagination Or A Healthy Sense of Self Preservation) and Category 2: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!" (People Who Possess Both And Also A New Paralyzing Fear Of Sticks) This is only the second movie I've seen that has truly terrified me. But then again, when it came out, I was living on a medium sized farm (in a chicken coop that had been converted into an apartment....long story....) surrounded by an orchard of dead trees SO FAR OUT in the middle of NOWHERE that when it got dark at night, it got DARK, and I mean the kind of DARK where you can't see your hand two inches from your face. That.....might have had something to do with it, I dunno. I didn't sleep for the next four months. Welcome to your brand new phobia of sticks and rocks. Stock up on caffeine
If I remember rightly I think there was a web page before this movie was released and there was extra detailed info about the Blair witch documentary, It had a very word of mouth type of promotion and the cast didn’t do interviews or promote the movie to add to the gimmick that they are missing. I highly recommend ‘One Cut of the Dead’. It probably one of my favourite found footage type movies. It’s best to go into it blind , I love how it all comes together story wise. It’s a zombie movie
Re: found footage - No, it's not a dead genre, but there are way fewer that are being released in theaters these days, most being released directly to Shudder or other streaming services. But it is FAR from dead, the indie horror sphere is drowning in them lol, with plenty of higher quality ones as well. Some of my personal recommendations for more recent found footage: The Taking of Deborah Logan, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, The Tunnel, Incantation, and The Bay. It's one of my favorite subgenres, I could keep going with recommendations.
I remember we all thought this was real footage when this came out and that added to the terror. The director even paid the three actors to go on hiatus for a year to add to the marketing ploy that it was real.
One of the things about this movie is since they marketed it as a "true story" with no clarification that the footage is staged, people at the time thought it was real found footage. Family members of the 3 "victims" would call the kids parents to give condolences, and the parents would have to explain that it was a movie their kids were working on.
As far as horror movies go, if you want a good laugh after this, go and watch Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. It'll give you something to do at 3 am while you can't sleep. (also there's easter eggs in there)
Just to be clear the 3 dissappearing students is to give the movie our characters. The only real part about the movie is either the Legend of the witch is a real town legend, or the man in the shack in the woods was a resl story (cant remember which one)

This one really really creeps me out. Watching it alone, especially in the dark. Eek lol
