The song was written by Jack Nitzsche, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Will Jennings and was to be solely performed by Jennifer but it was Jennifer that said it should be a duet which scrambled the writers to add lyrics, Stewart the producer thought Joe's voice would be great and Joe himself thought it would be dreadful and even froze in his hotel room refusing to record at the studio because he couldn't remember his words. He eventually recorded but alone and the voice of Jennifer was added during mixing. Everyone agree magic was made with the final recording and the rest is music history..

The summer this song came out my parents got divorced after 21 years of marriage. I heard the words "the road is long, there are mountains in our way". I was 14 at the time and I knew that seeing my parents divorce that life does indeed put mountains in your way. So here I am at 54. At 38 I got divorced. I lost both of my brothers. At 47 I found another woman and had my first child. My mother has dementia. My father had a triple bypass and every week I do his laundry, medicine. The girl I was in love with in my teens died of breast cancer. Life did put mountains in my way. My daughter is 7. There are always mountains in the way.
I've been watching a LOT of UA-cam over the last couple weeks. This one, however, is the one I come back to most. It is the most spectacular duet I've ever heard. Each time I have listened to this track, these two and this song I find love in my heart and a smile on my face and a great admiration for these two. Jennifer warms me heart, she singing from hers and her body movement shows it, especially when she throws her head forward to the mike. I never pass this track by.
Joe is on top form here. This is the best I've seen him sing it. His voice is almost biblical. He puts everything into it and he reaches a plateau only accessed by the few.
