  • Stevie Ray Vaughan, Duke Robillard, Kim Wilson and gang perform for a Charity Benefit in Austin, Texas, 1988. One of a kind. I shot this during a Santa Benefit in Austin Texas while there covering the event, no one knew that SRV was gonna be there, only expected Kim and band. What a "TREAT" to say the least. This is the only video that exists since I was the only photographer to show up.

    Glenn, Jim Gardner here. I sat by you at the Balcony Club about 5 weeks March 2023 when you were videoing Junior Clarks Saturday night gig. What I didn't know at the time, is what all you have seen and captured on video throughout the years. I have watched this Dec. 2nd 1988 show with Kim, Duke, Preston, and Stevie Ray, sitting in for Jimmie that night. I saw Stevie many times but what you preserved for all to see this night is a great piece of history and how great he was. He was unselfish, and brought out the best of the other band members. These memories will live for ever. Thanks for making this possible. Jim

    My band opened for Duke at the original Lupos, in the 80s, and not only can he play, he’s a very nice person, who was very gracious to me and my fellow band mates, the way you would hope everyone would be, but they are not! Good to see Duke getting a little love, he deserves it!

    When you see Stevie playing with others he is smiling laughing having a good time. A real team player. Relaxed. Still really good and focused. When in the 3 piece setting dead serious almost like under pressure. Same with Hendrix Rory G Gary M and others . I guess its the price you pay playing in power trios. Still nice to see a relaxed Stevie having a good time.

      Well, East Coast Blues Duke Robillard was the interesting thing for me. Grew up in 70s seeing Duke and Roomful boogie the F every weekend beaches in R.I. - T Birds and Stevie played in same town coming up obviously of the Texas blues idiom and in Stevie's case some Hendrix DNA whereas Jimmy V and Duke were more traditionalist. I'm wondering how East Coast boy approached and felt about the jam with the Texas guys. This sh*t is smokin' No filler, no fat. 💥

When they all came back on, and as it was right before Christmas, they did a whole set of Christmas tunes! It was one of the best shows I've seen. By anybody. Also, SRV and JLV did a tine with one guitar and passed it back and forth both playing the shit out of it. By the way, it was Jimmy's Strat they used.

      Hi Glenn, is there anyway to know the exact venue and date? When the video starts says 12-87 and I know Stevie did a charity show in Austin Dec 2, 1987, no record of a show in 88'. I would love to have the video in it's original quality if possible, ....., I don't know if that can be!! PM if you want. Thanks again for that gem ;)

    • @Drifter70
      @Drifter70  6 років тому +2

      srvguitarlegend actual date was 12/2/87. The venue is unknown other than the fact it was an office building warehouse and the event was for Travis County Brown Santa Charity. The date 1988 was used because that’s when I dubbed it. The original was shot on a 3/4” video tape and I have no idea where that is. I transferred the footage to Beta then to digital. This footage is as close as it gets to the original. Hope this helps .

I actually went to a Concert in Dallas with Stevie and Jimmie’s Mother Martha around 1995 to see Doyle, Jimmie and Robert Cray with Donna as well. I saw Stevie play from age 13 and knew he would become great. He was a special person and the greatest guitar player I ever saw and I’ve seen them all.
