I went into the Navy back in '88 as an AQ all enamored with the F-14 (movie star), but I fell in love with the "hoover". It looked and sounded completely goofy. It was also a state-of-the-art flying switchblade and absolutely death on submarines.
@@crowvamp04 a whole squadron of 10 aircraft deployed when the plane was operational. Sometimes aircraft would be flown to Diego Garcia when the ship was on station for three months in the Persian Gulf to free up deck space.
Was a Senso with VS-32 back in the 70s. Was among the first to transition from the old S-2E to the Viking. This vid brought back some mostly great memories. We didn't have the most sexy airplane but what we did was as vital as anyone.
Great Video! Thanks for sharing. I had the honor and pleasure of spending over 3000 hours in the War Hoover. 1000 hrs as an NFO and over 2000 as a pilot. Had tours in VS-21, VS-37 and 3 at VS-41 (NFO student, Pilot Student, Instructor) Also flew with the Moonlighters as a reservist. Long live the War Hoover! Nipper sends.
1978-1982, i was stationed at NAS North island, working with VS-41. on the S-3 simulator. as a result i grew to love this airplane. flew the simulator many times. not many women got to do carrier take offs, landings, and yes, crashes.
My dad was a manufacturing design engineer and he worked on this project at Lockheed in the late 60s. I remember him bringing home golf caps and tshirts with S-3 Viking on them.
My first job in electronics was final testing and tuning of the FLIR (Forward Looking InfraRed) units in these babies. I always envied the guys who got to go out and actually take a ride in the S3A and see them in action.
Thanks for posting this. I was an AM3 in the reserves and I worked at VS-41. I spent one year there up until decomm. I had math final I had to take so I missed it. (I was using my VA bene's to get my AA.) I miss my time there a lot. Thanks for sharing this. Much appreciated! BZ to ya!
What a nice video... Thanks for posting. Takes me back to my wonderful days in VS-37... '83 - '86, w/ the Mighty Sawbucks, onboard good ship Constellation.
Very worthy replacement for the S-2 Tracker...…….miss hearing the radial engines and this "hoover", too, since it is now retired. Nice video, thank you very much.
VS-41, VS-24, VSSU (VS-27), VS-28 and the reserve Squadron VS-0174. Help build the ES-3A's, and 9 years as a Lockheed Tech and 3 years with NATEC on it.. knew this plane like the back of my hand.
Brings back memories. My first job in technology was working in VS-21's AT/AX Shop (Work Center 210). Installing and removing the FLIR took a little expertise but wasn't too bad once you got the hang of it. Of course, removing and installing ANYTHING on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, during night ops, was ALWAYS challenging! Still, had a lot of fond memories. Hard to believe Uncle Sam let an idiot like me loose on his aircraft.
Sorry Kaden, I was on the Ranger, but I did have a friend of mine from AT school who was on the Sara: Joe Jankowski. He worked in AIMD though but he was an AX too so he might have been with VS-30.
Warren, It was great to hear from you. All those names you mentioned... yours too... brings back memories. I'll have to come out there sometime to look at the stored S-3's (are we really that old?) and to swap sea stories. Thanks for the comment.
I was in VS-38.. great squadron at North Island and West PAC 84 on the Kitty Hawk. CO was CDR Bourland then CDR Johnson. Great times, good people, best times of my life! Fly Navy. I was a AD2 jet mechanic TF-34 GE engines and fuel systems. Plane Captain then on to the Mech Shop as a Final Checker on the flight deck. QA inspector qual’ed. We were the Champions.. of the World!
Was assigned to the "AT/AQ" avionics shop at VS-41. The FLIR was a bear to remove and replace. (I hated getting that job). "FOD walk down" every morning. Posted by Jeff "Rocket" Wright. Hi to Andy, Dale, Brenda, and "PooBear" wherever you all are!!
what a nice jet, i seen them when they came to Roosy Roads NAS. years ago...i missed all those jets in Ceiba, PR? I`m retired US AIR FORCE A-7D F-16A MECHANIC...
82-85 Although I was an MS (COOK). Hated by the Squad as I was a Seaman and not an Airman. Hated by Ships Co as the only reason they were going to sea was so the Planes could fly. Hated at NASNI if the Squadron is there more to cook for... Even though we always had our MS's helping out. Would still choose to be with a Squadron over Ships Co though.
Business jet? If a bill gates buy a aircraft carrier it would make sense ;-) Wait... You cannot buy a licence to use things like IFF, KY-58, torpedos and guided missiles....
What the hell is wrong with people who post videos today? They need to always have sharp, loud, pecking noises. What the hell is that and why? They do not seem to comprehend that music is supposed to complement the visuals of a video not overpower it with sharp, shrill, pecking noises. I see the creator of this video as a goofball kid with a propeller on his hat

I have just over 700 hours in the War Hoover. Thank you for posting this video. It brings back a lot of fond memories.
What Carrier life like as for this? They don’t deploy a whole squadron , only 3-4 planes right? So it’s more of a det.

Maybe not sexy but definitely cute and innovating, not to say unique!

Had a lot of fun in my two tours as an AW (SENSO) at VS-37 and VS-41. Great airplane for its mission.
Loved this. Did most of my work in the ES-3 but had plenty of flights out of the Viking as well. Great memories.

Flew the 'A' model of the S-3 early/mid 1980s. A 'Gentleman's Airplane'. I found it to be a lot of work to fly formation after T-A4Js.

Actually that sensitive stuff is all removed on aircraft which is auctioned as military surplus....just look at current private warbirds.
Lockheed Martin still have about 40 of these at the Boneyard and just offered them to S Korea.
