no idea why these were ever retired. far too soon. great long range - modern engines for even longer range. big space to fill with what you want electronics wise.
I was at the field when it landed in San Diego. I had flown in the S-3 for 20 years and retired in Dec. 1998. Seeing this coming in for the last landing was bitter sweet. I got to hug the engine until it cooled off for the last time.... It was like saying goodbye to a dying friend.
I live about a mile away from NASA Glenn so I was fortunate enough to see the Viking fly on numerous occasions, very unique sounding engines being the same type that is used on the A-10 Thunderbolt aircraft.
So weird seeing an S-3 do a proper takeoff roll. I have only ever seen S-3s doing cat shots off the deck of a carrier.
I had the privilege of flying in the "Hoover" over the South China Sea in 1978-79. Thanks for posting this!!

Grew up watching these fly around NAS JAX, so sad to the last ones finally retired!

Only the retirement of this magnificent bird deserves a thumbs down! Thank you.
So underrated 😢
Imaging a transformation of this plane in 4 seats private jet. Should be nice!
Magnifico video 👏👏
Cool.. I had a model of an S3A (Esci 1/48)
I just saw "Big Al"!
If I had the money, I’d buy two S3 Vikings and sell tickets for carrier landings and cat shots!
you'll know why it's called hoover when you hear it fly over !
