My brother was like Timmy. He was disabled, he could barely speak, and he did need assistant for a lot of things we take for granted. But he was also loving, smart, and always happy. I think it’s really honorable the way South Park uses Timmy, and I wish more media would acknowledge the overlooked community that Timmy represents.

I really love the way that Timmy was utilised in The Fractured But Whole game as a Professor X character especially how he talks with telepathy. My interpretation of this choice is that he has such powerful psychic powers that he can’t talk like other people and so he has to communicate through telepathy

The time travel joke was top tier. it is both a joke at timmy's expense on a meta level, as well as being the punchline of a time travel joke because he can't tell anyone of his adventures, so him being all over time is a secret kept to himself.

Timmy is one of those characters that's so nice you question how the fuck he was born in south park. Him learning to say the band name because he doesn't want anyone to feel excluded, and the episode where he gets attached to the disabled turkey are so sweet. Seeing a character being genuinely tender just because they want to is rare in that town.

My mom is a teacher for kids with disabilities, she has a 25+ year career
One of the things that I've learned from her is that the best way to make people with disabilities feel included and free, is to let them participate and make choices 😂
Is that simple, and the writers of South Park nailed it, they don't celebrate Timmy doing normal stuff, they don't patronize him either, and let him just be a regular kid
The "Timmy 2000" episode reminded me of anecdote from my mom about a kid with down syndrome who was obsessed with motorcycles
At that time all his family and the teachers were worried he was going to hurt himself if they let him near one, but one day he managed to get to the bike of one oh the teachers
Not only he didn't do anything crazy, he just explored it and made questions, but also he was visibly happier after that
That was almost 10 years ago, and iirc, he is now a mechanic
My mom hates South Park, but she'd agree that Timmy has been treated well

Timmy is definitely one of my favorite characters from the series and it makes me a little sad that he’s fallen into the background over the years. It’s kind of crazy how frequently used Timmy was throughout seasons 4-10 considering that he went for several seasons afterwards without saying a word. His prominence in The Fractured But Whole and Handicar at least gave us some great moments, but more Timmy is only a great thing. Hope to see him make another return soon!

Matt n Trey are good at picking characters to focus on. Simply put no stories they've had have a easy slot for Timmay. When he can fit in a story he'll slot in fine but he's usually there in episodes focused on the disabled.
Sadly he does just say Timmay. It is hard for him to fit in when Jimmy actually talks more.

    • @alphabetsoup6837
      @alphabetsoup6837 7 місяців тому +17

If I remember correctly, Trey addressed the reason for this is because Timmy can’t speak dialogue and it’s very hard to write compelling stories when your character can only say one thing.

Granted, the lack of focus on him gives him the luxury of being probably the only kid in the South Park cast without godawful parents, as they only show up once and never again. Come to think of it, his house also doesn't get shown again after Timmy 2000, not even in the games...

Long time South Park fan here, I remember growing up watching reruns of episodes before I finally started to get into the show on a regular basis when season 8 aired.
I always loved Timmy's character, even if sometimes I felt uncomfortable in certain moments because I was a kid and adults would always tell me and everyone else that people with severe mental disabilities were not to be made fun of or laughed at.
But the way in which Timmy was treated by the boys was so akin to what it's like being a child and still having the innocence to not fully understand why Timmy is the way he is but include and befriend him, because it's not about what Timmy can and cannot do compared to everyone else, it's quite literally what their adventure is going to be today and Timmy is riding in tow with the action.
Like Johnny and some of the rest of you, I felt disappointed when Timmy took a back seat in the following seasons so that Jimmy could ride shotgun with the plot. But, the same can be said for characters like Wendy, Token, and Craig, not always in the spotlight, but still important enough to escape permanent death in the series.
I would love to see more episodes centered around Timmy, his early episodes are iconic and can never be replaced. The steroids and Gobbles episodes live rent free in my mind but there's definitely room for more.

They are all friends and they play with each other, quarrel with each other and reconsile with each other. Even Nate and Mimsy has some other qualities than just being handicapped. Nate is always-scheming and Mimsy is loyal and kind-hearted and even their disabilities are not the poiny of joke- it's usually the fact that Nate's schemes always backfires in a big way.

I was born disabled and lucky enough to be treated by most of the kids I hung out with, like the kids treat Timmy. It was always the adults who were either just uncomfortable around me or treated my existence as "inspiration porn" -- Timmy and Jimmy are both great, but because the disability Timmy has looks so much like the most severe type of my own (cerebral palsy), he'll alway be one of my faves. Young enough kids don't have their parents' issues around disabled people yet, so they see the difference but it becomes fun-- a puzzle that lets them work out how to include the disabled kid in their games. Adults are the ones who most often wish they didn't have to deal with people like us. Matt and Trey have my utmost respect in how they went about including Timmy and Jimmy as characters.

One of my favorite moments with timmy and the other boys is in the one episode where they misunderstand sex ed and assume you need to wear condoms all the time, stan or kyle offhandedly mention that somebody needs to help timmy put his on. It always made me smile with how much they really care about timmy and are willing to help him out. Its really sweet.

This is why I love South Park and why I love Timmy. As a disabled person, too often throughout my childhood I was made to feel inferior or different than everyone else. My disability was treated like a contagious disease. People didn't like having me around because _my_ disability made _them_ feel uncomfortable. I was the punchline to many cruel jokes. So I like that the kids in the South Park universe treat Timmy as a pal and see his disability as no big deal.

Timmy is one of the characters who reminds me of why I think South Park works: The show takes a simple issue that society tends to overcomplicate and then throws that same issue back in our face.
It's as you said about the creators VS. the network. The network was worried about backlash surrounding a disabled character and how they're portrayed, and the creators were just like, "You're stupid, now hold my beer," and showed the audience specifically why the issue was stupid, why it was easy to fix, and why it didn't need to become a complicated nightmare.
Timmy (and Jimmy, for that matter) work partially because South Park reminds us that sometimes society makes things way harder than it needs to be and that we don't need to overcomplicate things by pushing our own ignorant perceptions onto the issue.
Like the issue of how to "properly" treat the disabled.
It's easy. Treat them as you would anyone else. This is sh*t we learned in elementary school. Clearly, the South Park kids understood that. Why can't the rest of us?

The kids working to include Timmy because they genuinely like him reminds me of this tik tok I saw from a guy in a wheelchair about how his kindergarten class made special rules to include him in baseball/kickball.
He was always in t he field, and throwing the ball AT him counter as him catching it 😂 he said his mom was not happy

The big thing that matt and trey got right about their portrayals of both jimmy and timmy is that in reality weather it be mental, physical, developmental or learning disabilities that affect them disabled people don't want special treatment and absolutely do not want to be treated like charity cases, they want to be treated as equals and seen as being normal (or as normal as they can be) people who despite being different due to things beyond their control are still just as capable of enjoying life and finding things they're passionate about that make them happy.
Their portrayal runs contrary to how a lot of other media either portrays disabled people as being needy, helpless and either being too stupid or incapable of doing for themselves without the pity of others.
One thing I'd love to see them do is introduce a character who is "self diagnosed" as "high functioning autistic" and let the other characrters (aside from cartman) along with jimmy and timmy really tear into them for the level of selfishness and narcissism such people show by pretending to be autistic so they can get away with being monstrous assholes too everyone around them.

I just have a question: if someone was very clearly autistic but wasn't able to or didn't want to get a diagnosis, would it still be narcissistic and selfish of them to say they're autistic?

Timmy is the type of diversity that every piece of media should strive for. Having characters that aren’t limited to just their gimmicks. As much as representation is more common nowadays. How often will you find an episode of a tv show or movie where a gay, trans or disabled person isn’t part of a story about their identity. Those stories are no doubt important in order to reverse a lot of the bigotry aimed that them for decades now. But at the same time. This is kind of representation is important to. True equality. Not just brining out your token characters when you want to write a story about a certain group.

As a physically disabled person who uses a power chair I have SO MUCH to say. This may be a bit long but bear with me! From the very beginning Timmy is treated normally by his friends. It’s not a big deal to them in the slightest. Yeah they make fun of him. But their friend group makes fun of everyone for everything. In my experience when someone around you is able to make dark disabled jokes towards me it usually means that they are totally comfortable with me. You and your friends joke and mess around. But people a lot of time see this as “bullying” which is the farthest thing lol.
However if you are able bodied and going around commenting “TIMMY” on disabled people’s post online constantly. You aren’t funny. I swear it’s all I get when I post
